Really cool castle, just a bit smaller than most. Very interesting though with a great cafe

Sadly I visited here on a Monday and they don't let the public into the castle on mondays so I only got to walk around the outside, the dog really enjoyed it though. They were carrying out some maintenance work so at least it is being well looked after. I will have to visit again when the work is completed but not on a Monday!! More...

I really loved visiting the Southsea Castle. It is right next to the sea. It was free to go in. The castle had stairs, so it might be hard to climb if you have children. The day I went it was not busy, so sometimes I had the whole room to myself. It was fun. I learnt a lot about the castle and the people that occupied it. There were board games for children to play. I believe 30 minutes would do for children before they get bored here. You can then go to the cafe and their gift shop. The shop was small but filled with great little treasures. Prices were very good. A metal cup went for £5.95. Bath toys for babies were sold for £1.95. More...

Brilliant! Loved it. Interesting bit of history. Yes it's small and took me around 10 - 15 minutes to look around, but there are interesting displays, and it felt authentic. Well worth popping in - as i did - when passing. If you're interested in history, and especially Henry Vlll, then this is for you if you're in the area. Also has a courtyard cafe, and brilliant views.Tie your visit in with a trip to see The Mary Rose, as this is where the King and all stood in shock and watched her sink. More...

Visited the fountains which is all on one level so I could see my kids wherever they were while they had heaps of fun. Once the sun had gone in, a bit of culture and history went down a treat and my children loved the interactivity within the castle

Brilliant little find. Really interesting place that is free to get into, which is obviously a bonus. (as a side note, we wouldn't have minded paying a couple of quid to get in)There is some interesting information on display here about the castle, Henry VIII and the Mary Rose aswell as activities dotted around to keep the kids interested. Some really great views from the top of the ramparts and there is a lovely little cafe and shop. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. More...

What a surprise I'd never been in the castle before only been on the outside but it's worth a definitely worth a look. Have a walk round the walls and there's great views inland and out to sea. Then have a look at the small exhibition inside, it's only a couple of rooms but interesting nevertheless. Then you can treat yourself in the Cafe in the courtyard. Can't be bad for a freebie and if you're going to visit the Mary Rose exhibition in the dockyard it's a must as you can see the yellow bouy which marks the spot where the wreck was raised. More...

Wonderful. It was our first time visiting The Courtyard.. The staff were very welcoming and although we just wanted a coffee nothing was to much trouble. The menu, even the child's menu, left you spoilt for choice. Definitely a place to visit again and again.15Feb. My wife and I were at the Castle today as its her birthday. One of many quaint historical features of Portsmouth and Southsea. However this one is not just a feature that you can go and learn some local history. Totally free to enter and have a look round giving good views of Southsea common and the solent. A standard souvenirs shop and a cafe where you can try out the beer that is brewed within the castle itself and on the weekends you can go in and look around and buy beer to take out. The run up to the entrance is welll presented as you go past the D-day museum and the fountain are very nice, more so at nigh when they are illuminated. More...

The castle is great, could do with a little shop maybe but D Day has a cafe too.
This review is really more to do with the new water feature outside which is perfect for the kids and the new paving on Brian Kidd Way which they can scoot on. Really good

Great free resource in Southsea for any weather. Do donate as they reinvest it well in the structure and visitor reseohres. For instance this Easter holidays there's a free craft tent and they are working on the upstairs. Also there was a egg hunt. The café is also a great venue. Visited here a lot and learned a lot with very friendly staff. More...

Great place but a few things you need to know.

The ramparts and museum close from November to April.

The courtyard stays open.

A really great little micro brewery in the courtyard sells to take away their great naturally brewed ales.

The nice little licensed restaurant only sells savoury food til 3 for some bizarre reason. However the cakes are really good.

Enjoy!

We visited the frankly fantastic restaurant here and were not disappointed. The entire booking process for our group of 12 was easy and well organised. On arrival we were greeted and seated with no fuss and meals turned up exactly as ordered. The food is excellent, simple, tasty and with a touch of class. A nice touch was the chef coming to see us to check all was well. Price was the biggest (and smallest) surprise of the evening. Very reasonable for the standard of food. We would definitely recommend it. More...
