Three generations of my family just shared one of the best Christmas’s possible. The hotel, the staff and the food at Holbeck Ghyll made a very memorable occasion. At every stage the service was first class, attentive and friendly. The food, fantastic and the managers walk yesterday, wet.....Many thanks from all of us. More...

Weekend in December at the most dog friendly hotel ever. Everything else was superb, from the welcome, the room, the service and the views. The dinner for about 40 was great, not the feeling of mass catering one sometimes experiences. The grounds are lovely and the views of the lake breathtaking. The dogs insist we go back. More...

The Holbeck Ghyll is breathtaking. The food is amazing, the staff are wonderful, the views are spectacular. We stayed for three nights on a DBB basis, which included a different 5-course tasting menu each night. the rooms are comfortable and spacious, and spotlessly clean. What we particularly like, however, is how welcoming the hotel is to dogs, in as much as, they allow your pet to stay in the room while you dine, or they will set up a table in the bar area so that your dog can join you. This is great, as other dog owners know, most hotels and even self-catering cottages do not allow dogs to stay on their own. So well done to the Holbeck Ghyll for not only providing a 5*experience but for also welcoming dogs and their owners. More...

Not only were we made most welcome but so was our dog Tipple. At the entrance door was a notice board welcoming her by name and leaving a jar of biscuits for her to enjoy. ||She of course loved the treats but even more so did we enjoy the human treats. The food at Holbeck Ghyll is quite exceptionally good. On our last night the chef prepared a special dinner for us as we had eaten through the set menu! The staff are all most friendly and very willing. Even the weather was kind to us - nott too much rain -and on our last day the sun shone for us. The view from our bedroom window over Lake Windermere was sensational. Hurry along to Holbeck Ghyll. More...

We had the champagne afternoon tea, having read that it is the best in the Lake District. It was certainly tasty and filling, the chef displaying impressive pastry skills. The service is excellent and the building interesting, with what looks like an Arts and Crafts influence. The view of Windermere from the terrace is outstanding and we were lucky to be there on a dry day in between two bouts of heavy rain. More...

We booked to stay at this hotel a while ago and became somewhat dismayed by various negative reports. However as we are harden travellers we decided to continue as planned. ||We arrived and on entering the hotel we were greeted by a lady on reception who took our bags to room whilst another lady showed us around. Our room was a good size and very nice and clean and yes maybe a little tired but comfortable with a view of the lake.||So far so good, so down dinner we went. The food was excellent and our only complaint was that we couldn’t have seconds. As the menu is somewhat limited we decided to choose our second evening meal from the bar menu. This again was excellent and left us in no doubt that we made the right choice. ||Last but no least the staff looked after us very well and we will be going back. More...

Overall a great stay at Holbeck Ghyll. Beautiful grounds inside the main house and lots of choice at breakfast. We stayed one night in the lodge and one in the main house and much preferred the main house with all its charm and character. The “spa” is not really much of a spa, however we came to enjoy the lakes and were lucky with the weather during our stay so didn’t use this much at all. Staff were helpful however service was at times slow. More...

Just returned from a two night break at Holbeck Ghyll. This former hunting lodge of the Earl of Lonsdale has a wonderful aristocratic feel to it with oak panelled rooms and spectacular views of Lake Windermere. The food was absolutely delicious and the service from all members of staff was both friendly and attentive without being intrusive. Sitting outside in the hot tub looking out over Lake Windermere and the Lakeland peaks was a special treat. More...

We were absolutely bowled over by everything at Holbeck Ghyll. The room was beautiful, the staff courteous and accomodating, check-in seamless, surroundings stunning. But the thing that stuck out a mile was the restaurant, so much so that we were genuinely moved. That sounds hyperbolic but I can explain...||||My partner has allergies that are hard to accommodate, namely barley (but wheat is ok) and also nightshades, such as tomatoes, potatoes, chillis, peppers and aubergine. This means that it's very difficult to eat in restaurants as barley gets into more than you'd think, especially breads and (barley malt) vinegar dressings. We booked to stay at Holbeck Ghyll and we emailed to explain our predicament, expecting little. To our surprise and delight, we received a prompt and polite response, offering to provide us with alternative options for our meal (as in, safe deviations from the set menu) and the chance to discuss with the chef if needed. Reassured, we looked forward to our visit.||||When we arrived at the restaurant for our meal on the evening of our arrival day, the waiting staff ALL knew of my partner's needs and were STAGGERINGLY accomodating and also, crucially, discreet, as he feels embarrassed about it sometimes. He was presented with a separate printed menu that the chef had worked up and he was assured everything was safe for him. We ordered with confidence.||||It's hard to overstate the value of something like this for us. We love good food and the restaurant experience but so often we've been let down. The food was wonderful; between our courses both the chef and the GM Elia came to see us and ask if we were ok. The chef confided that he'd been nervous but he was happy he'd done right by my partner and was glad to have been able to accommodate him. It's so good not to have been made to feel like a hindrance or inconvenience; for people who love food, it's demoralising and difficult to have food allergies, and the outstanding commitment made my Holbeck Ghyll meant that we had a beautiful meal and a wonderful time in general, care-free. It was truly special.||||And, in case the chef wondered about it... Matthew never felt even the smallest pain or discomfort afterwards, not even a tiny collywobble. The chef nailed it and we think he's an absolute gem.||||THANK YOU, so so much! We will be back before long! More...

We were greatly impressed with our stay at Holbeck Ghyll. Upon arrival we were greeted by Lisa who was most welcoming. The 19th century building set in its own landscaped grounds is magnificent and sports a colourful history being previously owned by Lord Lonsdale who famously lost it in a poker game. More recently, Renee Zellweger stayed here while shooting Miss Potter; an A-list character reference if one was needed.||Our Room No. 5 in the main building was delightful with stunning elevated views across Lake Windermere and the distant Langdale peaks. The complementary locally distilled damson gin was delicious; an excellent digestif.||Our dinner at Holbeck Ghyll was exemplary – our compliments to Luke and his culinary team. Our gastronomic evening started with G&T aperitifs on the terrasse accompanied by delicious canapés. The Bulgarian Maître D was witty and conversational. Our three-course dining extravaganza was exquisite – served in the Arts and Crafts style wood panelled dining room. A delicious amuse-bouche was followed by a starter of Spring Pea Risotto, delicate flavours of smoked ham, truffle and parmesan expertly interwoven. Our main course of Spring lamb was sublimely delicious, pink and succulent married with sweetbread, quinoa, carrot and pea – scrumptious. We finished with a sumptuous dessert of white chocolate, strawberries, meringue and tarragon – delectable. Our wine accompaniment of an Argentinian Malbec (£38) was perfect.||The next morning we took breakfast in the dining room, my wife’s eggs benedict was super as was my choice of Full English – this accompanied by a choice of fresh fruit, juices and delicious home baked bread. Sufficiently fortified we embarked on the Wansfell Pike, half-day circular walk as recommended by the hotel. We were blessed with an azure sky and generous sun and the views across lake and dale were stunning. The walk is quite challenging and requires good walking boots and a strong constitution – so be prepared. In total we estimated that the round trip took upwards of 7 hours which included a welcome 30-minute break at a hostelry in Ambleside. The 10 mile round trip involves an arduous climb to the summit of Wansfell with the reward of breath-taking views across Windermere, Rydal and Grasmere.||After a hot bath and soothing bath salts, we were suitably revived to drive to the ‘Mortal Man’ hostelry in Troutbeck for a meal, selected on the basis of TripAdvisor reviews. Unfortunately the meal was disappointing – standard pub food fare - the landlord was friendly and we chanced on a delightful Folk music session which perfectly bookmarked our wonderful short stay in Troutbeck.||The next morning after another delicious Eggs Benedict, taken this time in the luxurious ‘overflow’ dining room – we visited Jesus Church, Troutbeck – approx 5 minutes’ drive from the hotel. The exquisite stained windows were designed by William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones and Ford Madox Brown and are a must-see for aficionados of the Arts and Crafts movement. Beautiful works of art enjoyed in a truly beautiful intimate setting – a place of great tranquillity and spirituality.||||We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Holbeck Ghyll, excellent value during peak season at £298 for two, comprising two nights B&B and one evening meal. A truly memorable wedding anniversary celebrated in a beautiful building set in amazing grounds, made special by the Michelin-star quality culinary skills of Luke Newton and his team, and the genuine hospitality of Lisa and her colleagues. We shall most certainly return. More...

The breakfasts are first rate and evening dining is, as before, superb. Thank you for a lovely stay. Just one or two comments that you might find helpful. Our room, number 23, has a great aspect, but it did seem overdue for a refit. The carpets and floor tiles all in a poor state and we had a problem with the bathroom radiator that took two days to fix. Its control knob was missing so we had no way to turn it down or off and at night time it was rather noisy. We booked for four nights, with two dining in, but for our second night dining in the staff weren't expecting us and we got a table at the back of the room and the same menu as three days previously. On top of that we found we had been charged twice for those meals. The staff were very apologetic and put it right of course, but we were left with the impression that the management was a bit disorganised this time. More...

Unbeatable sleep quality due to excellent large bed with high quality linen, perfect darkness and zero noise. I've read some of the reviews and they make some valid points, including the fact that some staff don't have very good (or clear) English. The place is not perfect. Our room had some worn carpet that is overdue for replacement, and a light bulb not working, which is something that should be easily & promptly fixed when housekeeping must know. We both agreed that the breakfast was our best ever, excellent food cooked to perfection and presented perfectly. (I had to laugh at the reviewer that compared it with Little Chef and then complained that there were no baked-beans. LOL) But despite some language issues, I stress that all the staff were very attentive and professional; in fact it is impressive to see such experienced professional people in such a small establishment.
