Is this a new start-up or a company/person that is already established?
Is this a re-build, re-design or completely new?
Name of the company or business?
Have you registered a domain already?
What is your business, your sector of expertise?
Do you offer a niche or specialist product or service?
Who are your competitors if you have them?
What is the goal with the website and how does it facilitate and support your business? - IE to promote your brand, to be informative, for people to buy products, events driven etc.
Do you have a brand, colours and logo already designed and set up? If not what sorts of colours do you find work best?
Do you have social media company pages already set up? If so what social media accounts are they - IE - Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn?
Are there other websites you like the look of?
Do you have hosting already set up?

In a nutshell:
We initially engage in a short brief and try to get to know your business and sector.
We try to get a feel of what you are looking for in a website and what other things inspire you on the web.
We try to establish your goals, and functional requirements for the site early on so we incorporate this into the design, what kind of cal-to-actions and anything that might be more bespoke.
We will always give you new ideas for the site from our experience as well as new things that are available to you.
For example - If you are building a forum for club members you may need to collect certain information, display and restrict logged in users to different levels.
We try to gauge how many pages would be required, and how many templates?
We then look over previous projects where time and costs have been tracked to give a ball park figure of time, costs including contingencies.
Our designers will then usually create 2-3 design routes, brand concepts, colour schemes etc.
Images and fonts would be finalised. We would then know if licences for web use and any imagery would have to be purchased.
Once a design has been signed off we would then begin the work of building the site and adding the content on a secure staging server to the point where it is ready to go live.

*Note this is a general kind of brief we take and may have more questions later*

We would need to flesh out any additional functionality so we would work that out in the design briefing phase - IE you want a particular type of booking system, or to send shipping labels to a courier automatically, which might require additional development.
Would you be sending out regular news shots?
How often would you be updating the content? - This would determine the types of Social Media that would be best to engage with - If you are not going to be sending out news articles, then facebook and twitter are probably not going to work for you, if you are then these can add value and back-links.
Generally we ask the kind of budget you have, we have done many projects in many business sectors so would have a pretty good idea of how many people and how long we might be working on your project. We will then tell you if your budget would facilitate the building of the project.
