Had a wonderful night, clean room, helpful staff. We were extremely pleased with the hotel itself, however, we went to the children's Christmas party and were super disappointed. The magician did a great job but the santa visit wasnt very good at all. It wasn't Santa's fault, the organisation of it all was just awful. The children werent told where to go or what to do so they just ran straight for santa, crowded around, not knowing what to do. I spoke to the events organiser about this and she came across as being angry with me for suggesting it should have been more organised. Kids are happy to take turns, especially if their grown up is with them. Other parents were having a moan too. The music was questionable too, no Christmas music at all. We left straight after the food. My 3 year old said it wasn't 'a very Christmasy santa party'. We love the hotel, we got married there, please take this as a suggestion for improvement rather than a complaint as the events girl clearly did. More...

We booked through Off Peak Luxury and were very pleased with what was listed as a 3star hotel. Bedroom 43 although up lots of stairs was huge and stunningly decorated both the room and bathroom were lovely. The only thing that I felt let down the room was no hand soap or other bathroom consumables. The decorative net blinds also were a little broken if you looked closely but only very minor aesthetic problem. Bed was very comfortable and well made. Very little noise at all. Even though the windows (due to the listed building status I know these have to stay in place) were wooden sash single glazed originals. The hotel staff were super friendly. Fred the bar man recommended a lovely wine for our dinner and we are in the main restaurant. The food was excellent and very nicely presented- the only down side for we two very hungry travellers was the portion size of the main steak meal - very few if any vegetables as it was a mass of swirled on purée sauces. It said it was served with potatoes. If what came with it were potatoes then the gardener needs a lesson on how to grow standard vegetables not dolls house size miniatures. My partner then asked for a burger as he was still hungry. We believe the bar menu would have been a better choice for us that night! Now the swimming pool. What a treat! I am an avoid out door swimmer. But didn’t realise what I’d booked until we arrived and were told that this 40yard 6.5 lane pool built in the 1930s is the ONLY natural spring fed pool in England. And was only reopened in June 2019 by the new owners. Water was drinking quality. Swimming in the naturally heated 19.5c water was lovely and a refreshing start to our day. And a bonus for us - no children are allowed in it. Which makes it perfect for training laps in. Not over run by nosey young families on hotel summer days! The pool attendant was kind enough to show us the spring where the water comes up from underground and the service hatch. What a treat! More...

I won a competition earlier this year for a one night stay for two people including two hours spa access, a one course dinner and breakfast. Spa: There aren’t huge range of facilities (hot tub, steam room, sauna and relaxation loungers) but the website is clear so we knew what to expect. It was very clean and we enjoyed all aspects, two hours was enough to feel relaxed and like we’d had time to use each facility a couple of times. Robes and towels were provided in the clean changing areas with showers. We didn’t have any treatments so can’t comment on those. Dinner: was very relaxed and very well prepared food. We ate from the a la carte menu mainly and added on extra courses (they let my partner mix and match from the bar menu when it came to dessert). It was all fairly priced for the quality, including drinks. Room: we stayed in room 26. It was spotlessly clean, well maintained, modern and had everything you would expect (bottled water, tea/coffee making facilities, hanging space with hangers, dressing table with mirror above, hairdryer, a decent size bed). Breakfast: they only serve a continental breakfast which consists of fruit juices, tea/coffee, fresh fruit, pastries, various breads with toasting facilities, cheeses, cold fishes (smoked salmon, mackerel etc), hard boiled eggs, yoghurts, cereals and much more. It was far better than many hot buffet breakfasts I’ve had and was being regularly replenished and the area kept clean and tidy. Overall: all staff were extremely pleasant and helpful, but not overbearing. We liked that there were various areas to sit with a drink away from the restaurant. Would not have chosen to stay here had it not been for the competition, but it is now firmly on our radar for a quick, local getaway. More...

My son and wife to be had their wedding at the hotel on Sunday 11 September 2019. We The venue was perfect the room was dressed by the staff and venue dresser exactly as they requested and nothing was too much trouble. The whole day was perfect and food was fantastic, including breakfast. The staff were amazing with my step dad when he took Ill and were so efficient and supportive to help and then get the wedding back on track ( he is now well and back home from hospital). So pleased this was the venue chosen as everything about the day was brilliant, thank you More...

Food was exceptional- brilliant chef. Gardens were lovely however our room looked out on roof and a metal stairway - very disappointing. It was supposed to be a superior room - it was quite modern but very small - not spacious like the pictures- again disappointing. Breakfast was only continental- again disappointing. A lovely setting and a lovely town - if we had been given a good room and a good breakfast we would have enjoyed it much more. It was still an enjoyable stay but could have been better. More...

My daughter and husband to be had their wedding at the hotel on Friday 12th October 2018. We stayed in the hotel the night before the wedding the rooms were nicely decorated, very clean and comfortable. We could see the preparations for the wedding taking place. Breakfast before the big day was amazing, to describe the breakfast as continental does not do it justice. The amount of choice for breakfast was really good, freshly squeezed oranges, cereals, fruit, yoghurt, toast and pastries the list goes on. Cooked breakfast was delicious poached eggs were perfectly cooked as was my husbands omelette. The venue was perfect the room where the ceremony took place looked stunning and the gardens for the photographs looked picture perfect. James and the hotel staff looked after us all day making sure everything was running smoothly. Staff made sure the corridors were clean after confetti was spilt on the carpets. The afternoon tea was plentiful and catered for the vegetarians, gluten free and the guests who requested no butter or mayonnaise. The evening buffet was really good with a choice of two hot dishes. All of the guests commented on how nice the hotel and staff were. How nice their rooms were although some had quite a few stairs to contend with. There were positive comments about the food and all said what a great time they had and some were going to go and stay at the hotel again. More...
