Very good music teacher and entertainer, if you would like to learn a great range of instruments that most people do not know, then go here. Quite cheap for the service and helpfulness they give you. More...

Guitar Lessons

First class tutor. Tailored lessons to my level. Recommended.

6 January 2017

Many years after playing music as a child and student, a few months ago I decided to try out a quite different instrument. Soon after buying one and messing around on it, I realised that if I'm to progress technically even to a modest degree on the new instrument, I need the knowledge, guidance and structured approach that a professional like Jim can bring. The first lesson after so long a time was a bit of a shock to my system, but it felt like the right thing to do - and I remain absolutely delighted that I found Jim to help me on my journey. More...

Jim is an excellent teacher with a wealth of experience and great patience. The lessons are always fun and informative and you get a great sense of achievement from the progress you make thanks to the skills and techniques that Jim teaches. If you are looking to take up one of these instruments, even if you have never played an instrument before, then I would highly recommend Jim as a tutor. More...

I found Jim when I wanted help with irish tenor banjo and ended up reading music! Patient and perceptive with just enough push to take to the next level. I have struggled with music teachers in the past but this one is a keeper :-) More...

My daughter has been having Guitar Lessons from Jim now for roughly one year. She has gone from a total novice, to being able to read music well, and playing some nice basic tunes on her guitar. This is the only class she has stuck at - and always enjoys going to the lessons.Jim is very patient with her, and progresses at a pace she can follow along with. More...

I started with Jim as a total beginner and after only a few lessons was becoming more and more competent. I am now around 6 lessons in and absolutely loving playing the banjo. I would highly recommend Jim to anyone. More...

I've been having lesson with Jim since getting myself a banjo for Christmas, although I had no prior music experience Jim's patients and relaxed environment has set me on the way to enjoying my banjo. I recommend his lessons.

Jim has been teaching my daughter for some years, and was especially good with her when she was very young and needed support and confidence. He has flexed her lessons to help with school work and performances with friends, and has created backing tracks at a range of speeds to help her speed up her playing. His enthusiasm for music is obvious, and he works hard to help his students share it. More...

Whether you want to learn a new instrument or increase your prowess with your present one, you can do no better than to have your lessons with James Allgrove. He has endless patience (and he has certainly needed it with me!)and teaches both practical and theoretical aspects of music thoroughly, whilst making learning fun.I have always loved the sound of the accordian : I was bought my instrument for my sixtieth birthday and it has certainly helped to keep my brain sharp. Now I really look forward to my Saturday morning sessions and have a sense of achievement when I make even the smallest improvement. More...

After teaching myself guitar poorly for several years, I bit the bullet and decided to take some 'proper' guitar lessons to learn sheet music. Jim has been a fantastically patient guitar teacher, remaining flexible with lessons; tailoring them to my own goals. Having had lessons with Jim for about 6 months now - the improvement in my playing is significant and I do not regret for a moment taking them up. I recommend Allgrove music lessons to anyone of any ability without hesitation. More...

After several years I can say that Jim has been a first class tutor covering tunes, theory and hand positioning. He has always shown a professional approach and as well as making lessons in both banjo and mandolin enjoyable, Jim is able to impart enthusiasm during each lesson which carries over to after lesson practice sessions. I thoroughly recommend Jim.

If you are looking for a good music teacher, Jim is brilliant. He has taught me Irish Tenor Banjo. I started my lessons after my retirement and when I started his lessons I couldn't read a note of music. I am a very slow learner, but his patience has helped me achieve and develop confidence and I have even managed to play to small groups of people as part of a music group and solo.Brenda C More...

My child is keen to practice and progresses well with his lessons on two instruments. Jim is encouraging and supportive, with a practical approach to chord and music theory. His career as a music performer means the pieces selected for lessons are up-beat and feel relevant and interesting. Custom backing tracks are often provided. Even the earliest pieces for beginner were "proper" music songs that could be performed with pride. More...

When I was a small boy, George Formby was my idle. My parents gave me a toy banjo for Christmas; (made of plastic) it was awful. Not long ago a friend’s son had a banjo for sale, which I purchased, I then needed some help from a music teacher, I believe now that I found the Best. James Allgrove of Calcot, Reading. He is a very talented man, with patience of a saint and he needs them with me being old and a slow learner.I would recommend him to anyone young or old.Dave Williams More...

Having yearned to play the UKULELE since a kid in Sydney, the first step was to buy a decent one. This I did on a trip to Honolulu a couple of years ago. The second step was to locate, over here, a really good teacher. Having spoken to a number of them, who focus on stringed instruments, none taught the ukulele. ENTER JIM ALLGROVE. From my very first lesson, I was truly hooked. Jim's particular style of tuition is, to my mind, unbeatable. He is cool, calm & collected ... never demanding nor stroppy ... and quick to give praise & encouragement. From the expressions on the faces of his other pupils, coming & going, clutching guitars, banjos, piano accordians etc., they too take delight in their lessons from Jim. Now, I am buying better & better ukes., growing my repertoire and even being asked to perform at charity fundraisers like the RNLI. I look forward, with relish, to continue well into the future, under Jim's tuition. I can recommend him, without reservation. unreservably.derably. More...
