Raise Your Voice

Singing was always my passion and hobby. Now it's my whole life! I believe vocal usage should be efficient, easeful and embodied. Here are four philosophies I follow: • Trying harder will almost always lead to a deterioration in vocal improvement. It’s finding the ease in vocal use that is the key. Less is often more. • Training at NIDA opened up a whole new world. Using acting voice training helps singers to feel and sense their voice, rather than just hear it - to be an embodied performer. • The most freely produced and authentic singing or speaking comes from your natural, organic and instinctive voice. Often it's noticing and releasing unhelpful vocal habits & muscle tension to find that voice. • I believe learning is about self-exploration and discovery, with guidance from your voice coach. Doing what the teacher asks to gain their approval isn’t learning. Why choose me? • I help the student discover for themselves with guidance and targeted techniques. • I take the time to understand the mindset of the student towards their voice and address this in my coaching. • I teach holistically – I teach the whole person, not just their voice. • Students get clear explanations of the ‘why’ when to comes to voice usage. • My Teaching is underpinned by a good understanding of the science and physiology of the voice. • Finding the unhelpful habits or traits of the student and helping them rewire these. • Experiential learning is key, helping students to discover for themselves, no “pleasing the teacher”. • Learning is layered. What each particular student needs at this particular time. I don’t clutter them up with lots of ‘nice to know’ stuff - it's not about how much I know, it's about what the student needs to be a better singer or performer. Voice lessons are either online or in person (Covid safe).

What do you love most about your job?

Every client is different, not only in what's going with their voice but their mindset, background and beliefs about their voice. It's fascinating to discover all of these facets and help them discover aspects of their voice they may never have found before. I love the variety - I have students who are teachers in the classroom, musical theatre performers and those just beginning to sing.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I was teaching voice as a side business and working in corporate HR full time. But I LOVED teaching voice and was becoming more and more disenchanted with corporate life, so decided to take on voice teaching full time!

Why should our clients choose you?

• I help the student discover for themselves with guidance and targeted techniques.
• I take the time to understand the mindset of the student towards their voice and address this in my coaching.
• I teach holistically – the whole body is included.
• Students get clear explanations of the ‘why’ when to comes to voice usage.
• My teaching is underpinned by a good understanding of the science and physiology of the voice.
• Finding the unhelpful habits or traits of the student and helping them rewire these.
• Experiential learning is key, helping students to discover for themselves.
• Learning is layered. What each particular student needs at this particular time. I don’t clutter them up with lots of ‘nice to know’ stuff.

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

I frequently use Zoom for other online platforms for lessons, such as Musicality (iPad). Whilst it's not as effective as face to face, it is surprisingly effective, especially when the settings have been set optimally for sound.

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

Currently only teaching online. When back to face to face teaching I all required precautions as advised by government guidelines.
