There are not enough superlatives to capture the spirit of this academy. Professor Carlos and Coach Julie are consummate professionals. The academy focuses on the craft for the sheer love of it. Everybody involved in the academy are friendly, supportive, and overall, great teammates. Should you want to compete, both the professor and coach will work closely with you to improve your technique so that you are competition ready. Do yourself a favor and visit Gomez Jiu Jitsu...it'll be love at first roll. More...

Before coming to Gomez jiu jitsu, I have never trained BJJ before. Julie and Carlos own and teach here. They're incredibly passionate about what they do, and they genuinely care about their students' progression in fitness and BJJ. Both of them are very skilled and humble, making them super welcoming to any new students. The classes are small and intimate, which helps you progress a lot faster than the larger academies. The students here all know each other very well and are all very friendly. It sounds so cheesy, but you really become family! Because of this feeling, there is a large feeling of accountability for each other, which I have learned to really REALLLY appreciate (because i was never like that). The schedule is quite nice too. For those who work at DTLA, you can come to class between 6-9a, and if you're waiting for DTLA traffic to die, you can go to class the same times at night. I moved to London, so I no longer train with them. I'm training with one of the larger academies now for 2 months, and it just doesn't feel the same. More...

Been coming to their 6am classes for about 4 months as a white belt. Coach Julie is incredibly welcoming, easy to talk to and patient. She has a gift for teaching technique in detail so that it’s easy to grasp as a lost beginner. I really recommend Coach Julie’s morning classes if you are a beginner and easily intimidated. More...

I have been training under the guidance of Professor Carlos for over 4.5 years now. He is a detail oriented, patient, knowledgeable, and charismatic Professor. He explains each technique step by step and throws in clever metaphors to describe things which is really cool. He is passionate about his student's understanding and progression. Not to mention his own technique is phenomenal and speaks for itself. #blackbeltgoalsThe curriculum is great. You'll learn everything from fundamental gi techniques, no-gi, competition techniques, weapon defense and using BJJ with strikes so we get a bit of everything. If you're new, you'll fit right in, and since the class sizes are not overly crowded like some affiliated academies, you'll get a lot of one on one attention from the instructors which is crucial if you're looking to improve your game. The academy is picturesque with white mats, a foot cleaning station, and complimentary water and towels. Be advised there is a white gi only policy. Metered parking can be found in the surrounding streets and is free before 8am and after 6pm. Note that this academy is on the 5th floor in the pink building on the corner of 8th and Los Angeles on the 8th st. facing side. There is a door code to get in so I would advise you to call, text, or email to receive it. There is a good vibe as soon as you walk in. Everyone that trains here is friendly and respectful. We train hard, but safely. No egos. I love training here and would recommend it to anyone whether you have experience or none at all. More...

Have been a student for a while now. It's a great atmosphere to learn and relax. Everyone is easy going, keep their egos out of the door is respectful and care about each other's development. Professor Carlos and Julie, his wife are the owners and they both care about each students development. It is a great place to train for men, women, and kids and no matter who you are, you will be under scrutiny while drilling (even in a group class). By that I mean you will be provided with positive criticism which will help your game.If you want to compete, you can take extra classes, drill to enhance your skill set, learn to relax and get the confidence to perform. Professor will exclusively give you key points to work on all through your training which will be key for your development and your final performance. It's a small, tight-knit, easy going, calm place for a whole family to train BJJ. If you are a meathead, you should lose your ego and your cussing out of the door. It's not tolerated. There are also self-defense classes on Tuesdays especially aimed at learning to use BJJ and striking to defend yourself in the real world. More...

I had the absolute pleasure of training at Gomez Jiu-jitsu while visiting L.A. The people I trained with were of varying sizes, skill levels, and were extremely welcoming. This gym was extremely clean, had amazing instruction, and provided a unique experience, that I would welcome any one in the area to try out. You could tell the professor was very knowledgeable and provided instruction in a very digestible manner. I cannot say enough good things about my experience and will absolutely be returning the next time I am in the L.A. area. More...

Awesome place to train in the downtown area. Great group of friendly people and head coach Carlos is a fantastic instructor. Not one of those gyms that stays away from takedowns and leg locks, but still encourages safety and being a good training partner. Super affordable as well, so it really checks all the boxes. My goal for 2018 was to get in shape and try something new! I found Gomez Jiu Jitsu just down the street from my apartment. I didn't know anything about jiu jitsu but Professor Carlos was quick to return my call and answer all my questions. I was really nervous for my first class but the professors showed everything step-by-step and with extra explanation about the progression of each of the moves. They go beyond the martial art and connect everything back to self defense in case you need it in the real world. I have been going for the past month and really enjoy it! They have a 6am class which is perfect for me to work out before going to the office. The small class sizes make me feel accountable to show up and put in work! Both Carlos and Jules give a lot of positive feedback and support which makes a huge difference as a beginner. I look forward to continuing here! More...

About a month ago I ran across the street to the little convenient store in front of my house. I believe it was to pick up snacks because I was about to watch a movie or play Xbox. After picking up my snacks I noticed a little business card/ad for BJJ and Fitness by Carlos Lopez. I always wanted to get back into shape. I was a former Marine for 6 years, and I want to eventually be a police officer soon. But to be honest for the last 3-4 year I have really let me self go. Eating like there is no tomorrow and being the laziest couch potato! It was weird how I noticed his business card and actually saved the number in my phone. Because who really wants to work out when they can relax?  The next day I called Carlos, he was more than professional and courteous on the phone. We met up at my gym and we just talked. I let him know, what I was looking for. I was straight forward and honest. "I need to get in shape!! I need to lose my gut!!" Carlos offers a pretty awesome package deal for training sessions. Very affordable. You can choose pretty much whenever you want to work out and how long you can spread on each session. Once a week? Twice a week? Once a month? We set up a time for him to come to MY gym and start training. Our first training session was a "test" session to see what my limits were. Being a former Marine (but out of shape)I was thinking the work outs were not going to be too bad. And during the work out even though I felt like I was about to pass out, I just thought it was probably because I haven't really worked out in such a long time. That night....I payed the price. I couldn't walk, I couldn't sit.....that's when I realized I needed this. I couldn't believe how out of shape I was. So I set it up with Carlos. I can not do this once a month or week. I needed to change my habits and body. I decided lets meet 3 times a week. M W F. After couple of days of being beyond sore. It was time for our 2nd session. He quickly realized what I could handle and can not handle and he worked from there. His instructions on training is pretty awesome. Motivates you constantly during the work out. At first I was very discouraged, but he kept on assuring me that your body will change you will get in shape. I usually work out with Carlos between 1-4 for about an hr. Prior to meeting Carlos I would use those 3 hrs to take a nap, eat, watch tv and play some Xbox. After the first several training sessions I just knew I did the right thing in calling him. And then there is the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, never in my life did I imagine I would take a mixed martial art. Let alone would I ever take BJJ. But if you think about it, with me wanting to be a police officer it makes sense. So for the first 30 mins it was fitness and the last 30 mins it was BJJ. BJJ is pretty awesome. Learning how to defend your self and take someone down when you really need to is very essential for anyone. Doesn't matter if your a kid or an older adult. After our 3rd or 4th session I realized an hr is not enough for me. Time seemed like it was going too fast. So recently we bumped it up to an hr and half. Every M W F, I get pretty excited on what I am going to learn and what I will be exercising that day. Yesterday, we did a hr and half session and I am beyond sore right now. But I feel so good. I feel energetic. I WILL recommend this training to anyone. Actually my brother is about to sign up. I plan to stick with Carlos for a long time!! I will post before and after pics when I feel like my body is where I want it to be. To anyone that is looking for a personal trainer/BJJ instructor that works for you and with you. Call CARLOS!! Best decision I have made in a while!! Can't wait until WEDNESDAY!! More...
