Marcus Bowman PhD

I am a psychotherapist and counsellor working in private practice in Cork city since 1997. I work with clients suffering a wide range of problems, especially anxiety, depression, sexual and relationship problems, family difficulties, OCD, and a history of trauma. I offer both online and face to face therapy. I have many clients who talk with me regularly over Skype, WhatsApp or FaceTime and they find this works very well for them. Other clients prefer to meet me in my office in Blackrock. Either arrangement is fine. My clinical background is in psychoanalytic therapy and this general perspective guides my approach to therapy. The stress is on listening to the client and helping them to understand better the underlying conflicts that are the source of their problems. I am not directive in my approach, I don’t tell clients what to do, but I will give advice if I am asked directly for this. My fee for therapy is flexible. It depends on how frequently the client wishes to meet for therapy, and I also take into account the individual financial circumstances of each client. So for example, a student meeting with me once a week will have a lower fee than someone with a good salary meeting only once a month. Currently most of my clients are paying me in the range of €50 for weekly therapy, and €60 to €70 for therapy that is less frequent than every week. Some clients pay me less than this, a few pay me more. Clients normally pay me via Revolut or PayPal or in cash. I recommend to all clients at the outset that they come for one or two sessions to see how they find it before making a decision on whether or not to commit to a longer term program of therapy. What do you love most about your job?

Psychotherapy has been a lifetime vocation for me. I enjoy all aspects of the work. I am also greatly interested in the theoretical aspects of psychotherapy and have written on these.

What inspired you to start your own business?

Psychotherapy has been a family business. My father was a consultant psychiatrist who worked in Cork for 40 years from 1965. I was born in 1956 and from my early teenage years I have been studying the practice of psychotherapy. In the 1990s I completed a doctoral thesis at University College Dublin on psychoanalytic theory. I also unfertook a six year training analysis with Professor Michael Fitzgerald of Trinity College Dublin. I returned to Cork in 1997 since when I have been a practicing therapist.

Why should our clients choose you?

The most important factor in therapy is the personal rapport between therapist and client. This means that finding the therapist that is the right one for you will always involve some element of trial and error. However if you are looking for a therapist with experience in this area then you should consider me.

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

At the moment I offer both online (via Skype, WhatsApp or Face Time) and face to face therapy sessions.

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

Offering online sessions since the start of the pandemic in spring 2020.
