Due to a technical error I received some worrying correspondence.
After contacting customer services and assurance from the representative, I also received an apology email.
Mistakes happen, it's how they are handled that makes the difference.
This was handled efficiently and professionally.

I was automatically switched to So Energy and they are just awful! I am a low energy user as was previously only paying £35 per month dual fuel. I was also in credit for £150. After the switch over i was then told that I owed £90! I received an email stating that my direct debits would go up to £386.31 per month from 1st April which is beyond ridiculous. I went onto my account and it stated the new monthly amount should be £95, so clearly a massive error. I updated my metre readings on 31st March as advised, and this morning I’ve still been charged £386.31! How is this amount justified as a 54% increase?? Even £95 per month is over this amount!! It appears that the majority of negative reviews here are from ex ESB customers, possibly there have been glitches in transferring accounts over? Hardly surprising considering the current climate.
Regarding difficulties in submitting meter readings on 31 March, I'd heard on the radio that a lot of suppliers' websites were crashing due to customers attempting to submit readings before April 1st. I decided to wait until the evening and then entered my reading at about 8pm, straight through, not a problem.
This is my 3rd year with SO and I find them one of the better suppliers having had no difficulties with either their website or in contacting an advisor. I can appreciate that other people may be having difficulty in contacting them at this time which must be frustrating.

Having been transferred to this Company from their partner providers my experience has been dreadful.
I had an absurd history where my bills had been hugely overestimated and silly amounts charged, for instance a bill for £6,000 for my 3 roomed flat! However, as an elderly disabled man unable to properly read badly placed meters this was not entirely the fault of the Company so they arranged for somebody to attend to read the meters.
As a result, it was concluded that I was in fact £168 in credit after my January direct debit of £80 had been taken.

In early March 2022 I was informed that my new direct debit was to be £558 per month!
This was clearly wrong and after several days of attempting to contact their awful customer services I was told there had been a mistake and they had based my direct debit on previous incorrect readings and that my new direct debit would in fact be £138 to take account of the new increase. They confirmed this is writing and I felt assured.

This Morning, April 1st, imagine how horrified I was to discover that they had taken £558 from my bank! Fortunately, my bank were able to stop the transaction. I have attempted to call this clown of a company 4 times today but despite e.mails and requests for call backs nobody has made contact.

As I said earlier, I am a disabled pensioner, have got rid of my gas cooker and no longer use central heating for fear of these ridiculous bills and I would strongly advise anyone to steer well clear of SO energy .

So long as you don't ever need to speak with them or sort out a problem, you'll probably be just fine. After months of incompetent/non-existent service (they now just dont answer phones or reply to emails, previously you might have been lucky and receive an automatic acknowledgement, alas no longer; I think they realised promising to reply in 2 days when nobody was even going to bother reading your email was disingenuous). I wrote them a deadlock letter, which they similarly ignored, so now it is with Ombudsman. This is surely a company in chaos, run by half-wits and cowboys. More...

ESB were a wonderful company but unfortunately having merged with SO Energy and using the SO Energy name the new company is not a patch on the old ESB. Emails go unanswered. Letters to the CEO are not even acknowledged let alone formally replied to and this is now nearly two months ago. Customer service is non existent whereas ESB phone calls were generally answered in seconds. Today SO Energy online account page is down and their phone line disconnects immediately. I have just come off the phone with OFGEM who tried to make phone contact themselves and they had the same issue. As soon as the call connects it immediately disconnects. Appalling. Website worked a couple of times but wouldn’t accept payment so had to call. Hanging on line for 40mins for an answer and then told my DD hadn’t been set up and they couldn’t take payment over the phone, only via bank transfer! ? With communication as it is, don’t trust them to identify my bank transfer and no credible services company can only take payment via bank transfer for weeks on end because their system is down.

No reminder letters or emails. It’s impossible to pay my bill.

Just tried again to log on and see if I could clear the balance before they take a DD and the whole site is down.

It’s a total farce and if this awful management comes back on my credit rating, I will seek legal advice.

Will be moving to a legit supplier ASAP.

Poor custom service. I have been trying for two hours to log onto their web site to submit meter readings - keeps directing me to the wrong landing page or freezes. So I try calling them instead - first few times number gets disconnected. Eventually the number rings I hold for 18 mins & then gets cut off. This has happened three times. So I give up! More...

I wish I hadn't renewed my contract with them last month but felt pressured into it and now they have doubled my DD when energy only increasing by 54%!
Absolutely disgusting and I explained to him that I was an OAP with limited income but he didn't care, horrible young man who I suspect is working on commission.

Switched with ESB and not impressed at all. Waited over 50 minutes to speak to someone. The guy I spoke to was useless. Can't find an email address on their website and received a letter today - Changes to your Variable Tarriff that does not make any sense. Want to speak to them about it and cannot afford to hang onto an 0330 number for so long. The letteris telling me about gas as follows -
Current prices until 31 March 2022 projected monthly cost - £152.37
New price after 1 April 2022 - £89.72
It looks to me that the price is going down drastically.
HELP!!!!!
I shall be leaving this company asap, although I am told to stick it our at the moment until prices have settled.

Have been trying most of the day to register my Gas and Electric reading for the end of March before the new cap sets in to no avail can only get so far before their system times me out. Do not know what is happening but would not expect this issue to last most of the day but will keep trying. Tried several times today to submit meter readings without success, confronted with several different reasons as to why I cannot login or if eventually I do get in it will not take me through to the submit readings form but times out with blank screen. I know it`s the end of this charging period and we are all going to be paying even more from 1st April, but it seems most suppliers have been caught out with the amount of traffic they should have expected today. The first person I spoke to was very helpful and answered my query, but then decided to transfer me to a very pleasant lady who was dealing specifically with queries relating to ESB Energy. Was with ESB when I moved away from Gas, asked them to remove my gas meter and they quoted me £75. When I tried to proceed they said I couldn't as they were merging with SO and my account would transfer so they cannot progress such work.

Move across and contact SO and they want £150 to remove the meter. I log a complaint with them regarding this but that I need it gone so I would pay if it had to be paid. Was told a complaint would be logged and they would contact the meter team to get the work scheduled. That was 2 weeks ago.

Called last week to chase up and was told I would be contacted by the end of last week, still nothing. Still waiting. Still paying for a gas meter I don't need. Guess its not in their interest to take it out all the while they can continue to take my money!

Probably the worst utility provider I have had the misfortune to encounter. SO was thrust upon me when ESB took them "over". I was advised of transfer date but NOT that my dual fuel billing and meter readings would be suspended. That my credit would appear, disappear and re appear on their portal (not that it means anything as it is dual fuel credit. They have failed to explain why I am unable to enter a Gas reading! The lady who i spoke to sorted out my enquiry very well. I had queried the excessive bill i had received and after a few minutes she informed me they had mistakenly overcharged me £88!
