I highly recommend Sew New. I had a last minute wedding dress issue just 9 days before my wedding. I was looking for a honest second opinion and if necessary some work to fix the issue. They fitted me in last minute, looked at the dress and had it sorted in a few days. They’re lovely people, providing a quality service at competitive rates. My request to make a cover for an chair shaped bean bag was not simple, but Heather was happy to give it a go! The end result is fabulous! She recommended some lovely hard wearing fabrics so I was able to choose one which would fit in with the living room decor. This morning I took my mum to visit this lovely fabric shop for the first time having read an article about it in the D & S paper. I can not praise Heather & her shop enough, we travelled from Leyburn, parked up close by, walked to the shop & saw that the sign read ‘Closed on Tuesday’! Mum & I were gutted however Heather who was inside her shop & immediately opened the door & welcomed us inside, two other ladies were already in there as they hadn’t realised the shop is normally closed on a Tuesday. Called in looking some fabric to cover a footstool and discovered a real gem. This is one of those fabric shops that you just don’t find anymore. I got great help and advice and found some lovely fabric for my project. There was a great range of furnishing and dressmaking fabrics and I’ll definitely be back! Whilst I was there a lady picked up a beautiful bridesmaid dress that had been made for her and another lady was having a lesson in store. This is a great local shop for fabrics, alterations and commissioned pieces. There's always a warm welcome, whether you're looking for something in particular, just wanting a browse round, or need some sewing help. Heather is proficient and very knowledgeable. She has bags of experience, and does her utmost to make sure that the customer gets exactly what they want, and at a reasonable price. Sew New was recommended to me through a lady at work. I phoned Heather to say I had some lined silk bedroom curtains that needed a good 12" taking off the bottom. Heather came to my house the following morning, pinned them up to the right length while in situ and took them away. 3 days later they were ready, she brought them back to my house and hung them to make sure they were correct. Popped in yesterday as I was passing (after getting directions from Heather �) received a lovely welcome from Buttons (the dog) as I walked into an Aladdin's cave of fabric, zips, patterns and so much more. Looking for needlecord Heather helped me find it but then showed me the delivery of soft, warm, wool-like fabric so the needlecord went on the nextime I'm passing list as I treated myself to some beautiful fabric in a winter hugging shade of green. What do you love most about your job?
I love meeting and helping my customers. Its all about getting to know what YOU want and how we can help, I enjoy problem solving and sewing new and interesting items.
What inspired you to start your own business?
There had to be a better work/life balance for a busy mum of 2! I was commuting to Leeds 4 days a week and felt as though I was not getting quality time with my family. I've always sewn since I was a young child and had progressed so far in the clothing industry that I was no longer doing the thing I loved....sewing. Following a trip to a large fabric supplier, I was inspired to bring the sewing services, workshops and fabric sales all into one place.
Why should our clients choose you?
As a busy mum of 2, I understand what it takes to juggle with lots of different projects at the same time. I have a wealth of experience in sewing a wide range of products both in my personal and professional career. I've made patterns, garments and run factories for a wide range of clothing types. I've taught people to sew in industry and in my business from ages 4 to 84! Most of all.... I love what I do. It makes me smile and gives great pleasure to help make something, solve that tricky problem, see the confidence growing of my students (whatever their age and background).
Dressmaking
We make made to measure clothes for a wide range of people. Custom made garments are created instore for you.
Sewing lessons
We enjoy teaching people to sew and seeing their progress from one lesson to the next. Individual lessons are £20 per hour, group lessons £10 per hour.
Curtains and blinds and soft furnishings
We make curtains and blinds and soft furnishing to order.
Clothing alterations
A wide range of clothes can be altered and repaired in our store.
Machine servicing
We have a regular mechanic who services and repairs sewing machines and overlockers on site.
Singer sewing machine agent
We sell Singer sewing machines.
