How can someone tell if their Garage is suitable for conversion?
A 'garage' is usually suitable for conversion, as long as the work is internal and it doesn't involve enlarging the building.
This (probably) changes if the property is a Listed Building, is in a Conservation Area, if Permitted Development rights have been removed, or if the 'garage' is intended to be turned into a separate house.
Local Planning Authority guidelines are to be researched and followed.
Run us through the different stages of the Garage conversion process - what's involved?
- Meet with the client to discuss their project.
- Complete an appropriate metric survey of the existing building's area of interest (inside and outside) and its immediate surrounding area.
- Research the needed Planning requirements (in line with what the client's need and the Local Authority guidelines).
- Design proposal stages/process.
- Design coordination with the necessary consultants (e.g.: structural enginner if needed; etc.).
- Once the design package is complete (Architectural set + any needed consultants sets), submit the Building Control Application (likely needed) and any other Applications as needed.
How can someone tell if their loft is suitable for conversion?
Planning permission is not normally required. However, permission is required where someone intends to extend or alter the roof space and it exceeds specified limits and conditions.
A loft conversion for a house is considered to be permitted development, not requiring an application for planning permission, subject to a list of limits and conditions (e.g.: A volume allowance of 40 cubic metres additional roof space for terraced houses).
The work likely requires Planing Approval if the property is a Listed Building, is in a Conservation Area, if Permitted Development rights have been removed
