Q&As

I love being able to support people to live enriched and independent lives in their own homes. It is so important to me personally, and to Radfield as a company that we support people to age well and to remain connected to things that matter most to them! The fact that I can support people to do this on a daily basis really makes me smile :-)

I wanted to give back to my local community and provide a truly person centred care service that I would be happy for my own mum to use.

We are a family run, award winning local company, truly committed to providing exceptional care to our clients. We offer a flexible and friendly service and are commited to supporting our clients to live well and remain connected to the things that matter most to them.

Radfield Connected Care is our selection of assistive technology solutions for providing next-level care and support. We offer a variety of innovative assistive technology solutions from our Radfield Connected Care line of services and products.

We made implemented numerous measures to ensure our staff and clients were kept safe throughout the pandemic. We won awards for our response during the covid 19 pandemic, one that we are very proud of is the Homecare award for the best response to the Covid 19 pandemic in 2022. We were up against lots of other companies across the country and are proud to say we won! This was due to us going above and beyond to support our clients and staff throughgout this challenging time.

Services

While it might become necessary, entrusting personal care to others is not always easy.

We all value our ability to maintain a level of privacy and dignity when it comes to looking after ourselves and our bodies. As people get older it can become harder for them to manage all their personal care needs on their own. Often it’s the emotional side of allowing others to help with these needs where people require at least as much support as with the physical aspects.

That’s why we make sure all our carers understand that personal care is exactly that. Personal. And it’s why we invest in training and ongoing development to make sure our team always takes an empathetic approach.

The Radfield team is on hand to help with personal care in many ways, from simply being there to provide reassurance as people get in and out of the shower or bath, right through to supporting people with complex needs, who require assistance several times a day.

It doesn’t take much for a to-do list to become a when-will-I-be-able-to-do-it list.

From cleaning and shopping to washing and paying bills, keeping on top of all the things that need doing on a regular basis can soon become a bit of a challenge when circumstances change. These jobs are not only important for maintaining a clean and healthy home environment, but they can also become a source of stress if they’re not carried out.

While these kinds of jobs might not always be the first thing that comes to mind when people think of home care services, they’re often massively appreciated when our team gets on the case and starts cracking through them.

Staying on top of the essential household tasks isn’t always easy. Coming home from the hospital, suffering a fall, changes in mobility, regular support away for a few weeks – there are many, many reasons why a little extra help (or a lot) can be worth its weight in gold.

Radfield carers will quickly put an end to overflowing letter trays, piles of dirty clothes, unwashed dishes in the sink, paths and patios losing the battle with weeds, bills that need paying, even bird feeders that need filling up.

We can create regular schedules of tasks as part of an ongoing care plan, we can respond as and when needed to help clear the decks or we can allocate time each week to take on whatever needs doing.

If you like the sound of that, and you want to know more or discuss some specific requirements please get in touch with your local Radfield team today and let’s have a chat about the ways Radfield Home Care can offer some domestic assistance.

The right diet and hydration are a great foundation for good health
Great tasting, healthy meals and plenty of the right liquids are super important for everyone at every stage of life. It doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does take a bit of time and effort to get the right ingredients and prepare regular meals and drinks. Sometimes that’s not always as straightforward as we’d like it to be.

There’s nothing like the aromas and flavours of food to stimulate memories and feelings. Old favourites evoke familiarity, while new dishes bring variety (it is the spice of life after all) and new favourites waiting to be discovered.

Our team can prepare all types of meals, from the basics of heating a ready meal and cooking some vegetables to go with it right through to creating a full meal from scratch.

As you’d expect we cater for all sorts of different dietary choices and requirements. We also support clients with different nutritional needs, which may include; making thickened drinks, catering for diabetic diets, and blood sugar testing.

Maintaining a healthy diet is about more than just the food on the plate of course – planning is a key element. Our carers work with our clients and their relatives to look at meal planning, make shopping lists, buy ingredients, and cook and serve delicious, healthy meals at our clients’ homes

All our carers are trained in food hygiene and nutrition, which means we’re constantly monitoring food and fluid intake where healthy nutrition support is required. That means we can keep a close eye on both short-term behaviours and longer-term trends to make sure that people are getting the diet and hydration levels they need to support their health.

If diet and hydration is something you’d like to find out more about, please get in touch with your local Radfield team today. We’d love to have a chat about the ways Radfield Home Care can offer diet and hydration support.

It’s good to get home and it’s important to feel settled and secure
Returning home after a visit to the hospital can bring mixed feelings. It’s natural to be a little apprehensive about what happens next, even as it’s also nice to be back in familiar surroundings. While some people may be coming back after a relatively short stay and in good health, others will be coming home to quite a different future with changes that may not all be welcome.

There are often lots of things to think about and prepare for even before someone returns from a stay in the hospital.

Obviously, creating a physical environment that promotes both comfort and confidence is top of mind. This can include a range of adaptations from relatively minor to quite significant. Increasingly it can also involve using smart technology to provide monitoring support.

And along with physical support, there is emotional preparation and support. While it can be a relief to return home from the hospital, it can also be unnerving as the medical staff who have been available around the clock are no longer on hand. It’s not always possible for family members to be close by.

Finally, there may also be new routines and behaviours to consider – from taking medication and changing diet, to personal care and using new equipment. It can sometimes feel a little overwhelming to be facing even small changes in habits. Especially when the person may still be in some physical pain or discomfort.

Whether it’s a short-lived or long-term adjustment, recovery from a serious illness or accident, or a relatively minor operation, our team is available to provide support across the board. We can be involved as little or as much as is required and our expertise and experience will help ensure as smooth a transition as possible.

From organising transport and accompanying people, to managing more significant conditions and changes, we know how to give people the help they need when coming home from hospital. Get in touch today and chat with our team about the ways Radfield Home Care can offer support for getting home from the hospital.

With the right support, medication can be managed effectively
From starting a new course of medication to managing existing prescriptions, medication can feel complex and even confusing at times. Not only that, but it’s important to make sure the correct doses are being taken and in the right way. We understand that it can become a source of anxiety for both older people and their families in different ways. This is why we’re working to help make it easier for everyone.

Our services for providing medication support have been developed by our management team, led by Radfield co-founder and GP Dr Hannah MacKechnie, and are designed to provide comprehensive support and complete peace of mind.

Our team works seamlessly with GPs and pharmacists to ensure the correct medication is provided in the first place and then our full medication service gives plenty of flexibility and choice.

We can make sure people take the right medication in the right way
Our team is qualified to provide support in administering medication. Maybe it’s a new routine to get into, maybe there are a number of different medications to take, maybe individuals just need a bit of help to make sure they’re taking their medication properly – there are many reasons why a bit of extra help can make all the difference.

We can administer medication from original boxes or from multi-dose systems which have been pre-packed by the pharmacy (often called NOMAD or MDS packs). We can also administer medication as creams, via inhalers, nebulisers or as nose, eye and ear drops.

It’s always really important to make sure we’ve got clear lines of responsibility between us, our client and the family so that medication is given safely.

We can take on responsibility for reordering medication
Again, there are many reasons why it’s often helpful for our team to take on reordering medication from a GP and making sure it’s delivered on time. As with all our medication services we do need to be kept fully up to date with any alterations to medication so that we can provide the right support at all times.

We can collect and deliver medications
Most GP surgeries and pharmacies tend to offer a delivery service themselves these days. We have found that often it can be helpful if medications are delivered to our office, which means they can be taken to our client’s home by a carer. And that means the carer can put the medication away safely and in the correct place.

We know just how important it is to make sure medication is managed properly. If you’d like to know more, then get in touch today and chat with our team about the ways Radfield Home Care can offer you support for medication assistance.

Getting some rest is easier to do, knowing there’s someone there for you
Night times can be a particular challenge. We all know that things feel different at night, that’s why it’s often reassuring knowing there is someone else there on hand in case you need to call on them. This may be for some emotional comfort during difficult times or to help with very practical support when it’s needed.

There are many reasons why overnight care may be appropriate. What’s most important is that people have the right support in their home alongside them and someone they feel comfortable and confident with.

Our team is skilled in a wide range of care services, and these can be made available at night time as well as during the day. It may be that medication assistance is required during the night, there may be personal care considerations and sometimes it’s about providing companionship at particularly difficult times.

Whatever the reason, it’s reassuring for all involved to know that there is someone there to provide planned and/or reactive support as soon as it’s needed.

In general, we provide nighttime care in two ways. Our carers can remain awake to provide support throughout the night, or they can sleep and be woken for assistance as needed. We’ll develop a care plan to make the right choices, which will depend on how often someone is likely to need help during the night.

We’re here to provide both practical support and peace of mind. If you’d like to know more, why not get in touch today and chat with our team about the ways Radfield Home Care can offer you overnight care support.

Nothing feels quite the same as living in your own home for longer
There’s no place like home. It’s a unique feeling, surrounded by familiarity, comfort, memories and things just the way we like them. There’s no doubt what might seem like small details can often have a big significance. For many people, the ability to stay in their own home for longer, as their needs change, can be a powerfully positive experience.

We know there are many reasons why people might need live-in care to stay in their own home and these might change over time. Maybe there’s a family member who normally lives with the older person who can’t be around for a period of time. Maybe someone is back from hospital and needs an additional level of care for a while. Whatever the reason, Radfield offers people care in their own home 24 hours a day.

As you’ll see from our other services, our team is set up and fully qualified to provide a wide range of care, so you can be confident we’re able to meet specific and changing needs, whether that’s medication support, personal care, nutrition and hydration, domestic assistance or more.

Our approach is a bit different to some other home care providers. We don’t employ carers solely as live-in carers. Instead, our regular care team can provide care 24 hours a day as and when required. This means care can be arranged much more flexibly putting greater choice and control in the hands of our clients and their relatives.

Many live-in care agencies provide one carer for a period of time before another takes over for a further period. There’s no doubt this can work for some people. What we’ve found to be very effective is to offer a small team of carers that our clients know, who will visit and support them throughout the week offering a broader range of interactions and support. If needs be we can also put in place round the clock care to support respite needs for a short amount of time where it may not be possible to arrange a live-in carer.

We believe great care is all about giving people the chance to enjoy living in their own homes for longer. If you’d like to know more, then get in touch today and chat with our team about the ways Radfield Home Care can offer you live-in care support.

Getting out and about can be great for physical, mental and emotional wellbeing
There’s no doubt that staying active and enjoying trips out of the house can be a really positive experience. From heading down to the local shops or hopping on a bus to visit a nearby museum, to a café for morning coffee or exploring a new walk, it’s lovely to be able to continue exploring and enjoying opportunities to get out.

This helps to prevent feelings of isolation and loneliness that can come when people experience a change in health or living circumstances that prevents them from doing things they used to do. And it makes sure that people still have plenty of things to look forward to. The anticipation of an outing is an important part of the overall mental and emotional experience.

Our team of Care Professionals can plan and prepare for trips out and will help make any necessary arrangements, such as transport, pre-bookings or tickets. And we’ll accompany people on their outings to make sure they’re confident and comfortable and, most importantly, getting the most enjoyment out of the trip.

We recognise, of course, that everyone is different. What may be exciting to one person can be intimidating (or just plain boring!) to another. What’s possible for one person may also be impractical for another. That’s why we make sure all outings are client-led in discussion and planning. Many of our clients find that just knowing they have someone to go out with opens a whole new world of possibilities to explore.

The Radfield team love getting out and about with our clients. If that sounds like something we could help you with, then get in touch today and let’s have a chat about the ways Radfield Home Care can offer you support for companionship and outings.

To be a great carer for others you need to make time to care for yourself
It can be a really rewarding experience to care for someone who matters to you – a family member, a friend, someone in your community. We believe everyone who provides care to someone else in whatever way is doing something amazing. Let’s be honest, it can be hard work at times and it’s important to look after yourself as well as others.

People come into carer roles in all sorts of different ways and the impact it has on them can also show up in many ways. It comes with many rewards, for sure, and it is also not without its challenges. Caring for someone else can be a big commitment, in terms of time, physically and emotionally. Often there are other priorities to juggle, trade-offs to be made and that’s not always easy.

We respect and champion every single carer, whatever the circumstances. And we understand what it takes and what it means. That’s why we offer respite care services, which enable a main carer to take a break and spend time in other ways. This can be on a regular basis – a couple of hours a week, or every weekend, for example – to get out to the shops, see friends or just sit and read a book in a café.

And it can also be on an ad hoc basis, available whenever it’s needed. This is sometimes interim care when the main carer goes away for whatever reason and we provide either full support during that time, or just pop in visits for peace of mind, whatever is required.

Rest is really important. To be strong for someone else, first, you need to be strong in yourself. We know that because we’re carers ourselves. We make sure our carers are well looked after and that’s why we are completely dedicated to providing respite care services that support other carers.

If you’re caring for someone else and would like to talk to us about all the ways we could give you some extra support we’d love to help. Get in touch with your local Radfield team today and let’s have a chat about the ways Radfield Home Care can offer you some respite care support.

There’s nowhere quite like home and that doesn’t change as you get older
Home is more than just a physical place, it’s often full of meaning and history, our homes come to be symbols of things that really matter to us. Home is a place of comfort and familiarity. Feeling like you have to give up living at home before you’re ready can be a significant and unwelcome disruption. Getting older doesn’t have to mean leaving home.

Radfield Home Care is here to provide the full range of support to enable older people to live longer in their own homes and empower them to get as much out of it as possible. Everything we do is focused on the simple premise of making ageing a more enjoyable and rewarding experience for all involved.

Our full range of services for older people covers everything from medication, nutrition and companionship to getting home from hospital, overnight and live-in care and respite care.

What does that mean? It means we have a team of carers at Radfield who are roll-your-sleeves-up, supportive, positive, honest, warm and committed people. That team is focused on enabling older people to live their best life for longer. And that means we’re here to do as much as we can to make it happen.

Our services for older people include taking out the bins, dusting, hoovering, decluttering, feeding the cat, washing and ironing, taking people out to the shops, to a café, to the beach for fish and chips. It means making sure bills are paid, medication is taken, food is eaten and drinks are drunk. And it means listening, laughing, playing cards, sitting in the garden together, being there all night if that’s what it takes. We know what great care means to us, we know what it means to others and we know how to offer it to everyone who chooses it.

Want to know more about what great care means to us and, more importantly, what it could mean for you? Get in touch with your local Radfield team today and let’s have a chat about the ways Radfield Home Care can offer support for older people.
