Q&As

All garages have the ability to convert to some extent depending on the proposed use of course. If the proposed conversion is for living accommodation or is to be form part of the dwelling / annex purposes then heights of the garage are imperative to access. As the garage will have to be insulated to conform to building regulations along with access and egress are also key points to assess.

Dependant on use but all works to conform to building control.

Existing ridge height is a factor along with the proposed access and egress in two the loft area to ensure they conform to part K / building regulations. Not all lofts require planning permission but if you wish for a dormer / increased ridge then this fall under that remit. If it's for storage then existing joists sizes are also worth bearing in mind as additional weight may impact the structural integrity of the ceiling / roof structure.

Processes are to initiate contact with a designer / architect to check the viability of the proposal along with a structural engineer / party wall surveyor if required. Then apply for planning permission if required along with building regulations and request quotes via contractors. The conversion itself must conform to building regulations and to the structural calculations etc.
