What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?
I love shooting live—people, bands, portraits, headshots. I love my prime lenses, selective focus, found light, and use Canon, Leica & Profoto.
Honestly, I shoot for me. Even though you pay me. I offer you myself, my utmost, my best. I offer you something no-one else can offer you—me.
I shoot—therefore I am.
I started as a junior designer, through to senior designer and then creative director—my path winding its way through and throwing some shapes at London. I’ve directed filming at Almeria racetrack in southern Spain for a British Superbike Team, edited and re-edited in FinalCut, cast and scripted national TV commercials, photographed the Royal Air Force, created actual campaigns from concept to fruition for Mercedes-Benz UK. There isn't anything I’ve not done (attempted). Now it’s just me and my camera(s). But I have something—I’ve been there and done it.
And I know what you want.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
Before you contact any photographers make sure you take the following into account as they may or may not be included in your quote: printing, retouching and hair and makeup. These are all factors that could substantially affect your budget, depending on your requirements. Also, location could also be an issue if you need to hire a venue/studio or get a permit to shoot in certain areas.
What do you love most about your job?
I started in the darkroom, it was all I wanted... developing, getting to know all about f-stops and apertures. I eventually got found out by the boss because I would waste huge amounts of fluid and everything testing and experimenting with effects, just to see what happens. I'd have my pay docked, it didn't stop me. I even try to experiment now, why ever not.
