I joined Karate Academy with my son and my main reason for being there was to aid and encourage his progress. I have to say I very quickly became hooked and years on I still find my time in the dojo very fulfilling.

The time table run is extremely varied and even with my busy work life there's plenty of lesson options available.

The main dojo is well laid out, spacious, has a rubber matted floor and makes the perfect environment to train. It's a very friendly martial arts club with very welcoming instructors and members alike.
The instructors are well trained, knowledgeable and most importantly patient. They always find time in the lessons to get round to the students to help them progress on a personal level.

I feel very lucky to have such an amazing martial arts club right on my door step, being run by an amazing team and headed up by a very talented and passionate leader. The teaching is methodical, pressure free and every student is treated on there own pace and ability.

It's this club that has made karate a very important part of my life and would strongly recommend to anyone that has an interest in martial arts to come and see for yourself.

We have been members of the Karate Academy for nearly 3 1/2 years. We attend classes at the Newton Abbot dojo, King Street, but there are classes at a variety of locations throughout the Teignbridge and Torbay area, and even as far a field as Seaton.

Classes range from Little Warriors - an introduction to Martial Arts - to family classes, ladies only classes, classes during the day (if your work schedule allows) and classes later in the evenings - if you want to escape the kids! There are also a variety of workshops and seminars during the year focusing on specialist areas from ladies self defense, Kata bunkai, bully busting/stranger danger, a summer camp, and we are regularly visited by instructors from across the country who bring different methods and viewpoints. There are even residential trips on offer.

We are lucky to have a fantastic team of instructors and many black belt students to aspire to. Our membership includes as many classes as we can attend and a 1/2 hour private session with an instructor every month - invaluable when you need to work on something specific, or if you're approaching a grading. There are a variety of different payment options and the fees are very reasonable.

The club is very family orientated and all are welcome to participate, regardless of age. I love the fact that I can train with my kids. However, if that's not your cup of tea, there is also a comfortable seating area where you can watch the action on a TV screen, with freshly brewed coffee or tea.

We are so pleased that we found the club and are proud to be party of the Karate Academy family - can't recommend them highly enough.

I wish I lived in Devon...outstanding club, the real deal! World class instruction from John Burke renshi and his team. Always made to feel very welcome whenever I am able to travel down. And for when I can't, the weekly videos sent out by email are a great resource to enhance my own personal training. I was looking for pragmatic, functional and effective applications for the kata I practice - I found all that and much more. I also got to know some of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet! The Karate Academy is a fantastic place to learn and study karate.
Whether for personal development or training with family and friends, the Karate Academy offers something for all.
With classes around the South Devon area you can train seven days a week with a different Sensei, all fully qualified, first aid trained, insured and DBS checked as part of the instructor training program.
Classes have something for all 4 - 90+yrs and are very welcoming to all, no-one is judged on what you have or have not done before by teachers and students alike. The hardest thing to do is to get up and walk in the door, after that the rest of your training is yours. Give it a go.

My son started training here first and soon he was joined by myself and his younger sister. There is a real family feel within the club whilst still retaining the professional standards required to improve your karate. I have seen both of my children and myself increase our confidence, fitness, focus and ambition both in the dojo and in our everyday lives. There are a variety of classes available; little warriors for younger children, mixed classes, a ladies only class and a class specifically for brown and black belts. There are a choice of venues to train at and a variety of instructors with a wealth of knowledge to help you. I would recommend this club to anyone thinking of starting karate. More...
