Aj roofing

Really bad.

AJ roofing & building services came out to look at putting new lead and repointing our chimneys. First impressions are they are very polite and friendly. Arthur informed us that our roof was in terrible condition and had to be replaced. He showed us the worst bits and said he wouldn’t do the other jobs unless he could do the whole roof. Professional pride is what he called it and said it wasn’t safe. We agreed that he would not only carry out this work, but also put a dormer on as it made sense to add value when having such a large expense anyway.

He reassured us he does these types of jobs all the time and that no permits were needed.

Fast forward 6 months later, having endured non-stop leaks, a chimney that still isn’t fixed, £54,000 less in the bank account and an unfinished job I couldn’t warn anyone any stronger than stay away from these guys. The job they have carried out is shoddy at best. Here’s a list of things that they can’t do:

Soffits came off after the first wind gust
Windows are installed inside out, despite there being a sticker on each of them saying this side out.
They have put lead on the chimney, but it’s still leaking.
They’ve used a mix of coloured tiles for the walls.
All tiles aren’t attached.
The door isn’t sealed and leaks.
The actual roof isn’t even water proof and still leaks.
They never turn up when they say they will.
They used inside paint on the outside and decided to paint the house pink without asking.
Didn’t answer the phone for 3 weeks while still holding a substantial amount of money from us. This happened on 2 separate occasions when the weather was terrible and we had to stay up over night at Christmas just to swap buckets in order to try and save the house from deteriorating more.
Due to all the leaks the house is in worse condition now than when they started.
They are messy and have left concrete to dry in the garden that we now have to chip off the tiles.
He also quoted us a price and later on tried to add VAT on top, explaining to me that’s how it works. However, his invoice doesn’t have a VAT number or a registered company address. Searching for his company I find no sign of him being registered for VAT either.
He has never heard of building control and has no knowledge of how to build according to regulations.
He put all the wooden beams on the side the wrong way around so we can’t put regulation amount of insulation in the walls.

To sum up - a bunch of lying cowboys that aren’t capable of doing the job and will squeeze every penny out of you. I think their scheme is to do a quick shoddy job and move on to the next. It’s only when they do a longer job that all the flaws come to light - and there are a lot of them!

In the end I’ve had to hire someone else to finish the job as I can’t wait any longer for this to get finished. The new architect firm and builders we have now hired have had to undo a lot of the work AJ roofing had carried out as it was not according to regulations. Despite having £54,000 on account they wanted to get the last £7k paid to them before completing the works. They started working in September and are nowhere near finished and have now stopped completely as I refuse to pay the last bit before the job is completed.

I’m probably partially to blame for this for being so gullible, but I always want to believe people are good. These people are really bad. Some lessons are expensive!
