What do you love most about your job?
Before I started this business I came from a design background but had missed working with my hands. Running J. R. Tolson Furnishings allows me to be creative and design beautiful pieces of furniture whilst being able to hand craft the designs for my customers. It’s the best of both worlds and I thoroughly enjoy it.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I was working in the Art Department in television drama and while I enjoyed being visually and artistically creative I would always envy the construction guys who built the sets for us. I grew up on a farm and used my hands for years. I missed it. So I started building furniture as a hobby. Soon I realised this encompasses both things that I loved and people seemed to like my work, so I started selling pieces. Very soon a part time job became a full time obsession and eventually a full time business.

Along with a keen design eye I come from a world where I worked for designers and directors and learned to take their ideas and create exactly what they were after. This has translated well into my business as I am able to understand a realise your ideal piece of furniture. I can pick up very quickly on what your style is and create a design that suits ou well. Besides this I am highly customer focused. I work tirelessly to ensure you are happy with the work and that you are getting exactly what you want. I consider my customers to be commissioning me to create and realise their idea or dream piece and so I will work tirelessly to ensure that that is what you receive at the end of the process.
I am also very environmentally conscious and work with reclaimed materials, responsibly felled hardwoods and eco-friendly finishes where ever possible.
