How can someone tell if their Garage is suitable for conversion?
Inspecting the soundness of the walls and existing foundations to make sure the garage is feasible to be converted into a living space. I always advise clients eatablish whether they will need planning permission for the conversion as this can be the case even if the area is not extended and work is purely internal.
Run us through the different stages of the Garage conversion process - what's involved?
Foundation & Structure: Checking and assessing existing foundations and in most cases creating C24 concrete footing for wall replacing garage door.
Extending Utilities: Depending on the proposed use of the converted garage allowences need to be made to extend/ammend electrics and plumbing for the conversion.
Insulating & Weatherproofing: In most cases garages haven’t been built to be habitable meaning external walls, ground floor and un-intergrated cielings will need to be insulated in line with building regulations.
Windows & Ventilation: Adding ventilation and windows in line with building regulations and fire safety.
Final Fix: Fitting out the conversion with clients desired finishings.
How can someone tell if their loft is suitable for conversion?
A loft is suitable to be converted into a living space providing there is at least 2.2M between the top of the floor joists and the bottom of the ridge timber.
Run us through the different stages in the loft conversion process - what’s involved?
Access Equipment: Specialist contractor to supply safe access to the work space. Depending on the extent of the works it’s often best for the scaffolding to make the work space weatherproof.
Structural Beams: Forming independent timber floor support.
Roof Structure: Creating roof structure in line with building regulations and tiling the roof.
Internal Joinery: Erecting internal studs, doorways, staircases ect. Insulating all external walls in line with regulations and drylining areas in preperation for plaster.
Plastering/finishings: Skim finish to all new and affected walls, decoration once walls are ready, second fix joinery to clients specifications.
