How can someone tell if their Garage is suitable for conversion?
Garages are usually single brick skin with concrete floors needing insulating.

- Speak to a planning consultant to confirm planning permission is not required.
- give notice to building control of your intention to start.
- move services if required
- form walls and window openings as required.
- add electrics and services as required
- insulate roof at ceiling or rafter level.
- Damp proof membrane to concrete floor with insulation over.
- insulate walls over battens
- plaster skim and decorate
How can someone tell if their loft is suitable for conversion?
The ceiling joists are often only 100mm or 4 inches deep, so a deeper, stronger floor will be required to meet habitable standards under Building Regulations.

- Does it need planning approval ? There are limits to the increased volume as well as restrictions in certain areas.
- Get at measured survey.
- Get scaled drawings. The stair arrangements are often important for a loft conversion.
- Agree the layout and then move onto detailed drawings.
- Decide if you are going to proceed under Building Regulations Full Plans Approval or under Building Notice.
- Get quotes from builders using the drawings and specification.
