About

I have a very modern approach to teaching music. I want my students to be competent professional musicians when they leave me. This means that not only do I teach them to play (and read) music but I teach the areas of the hobby that are often neglected such as instrument knoweldge & care, audio production, tone, equipment, gig etiquette, and music theory.

George has been brilliant for my daughter, a great teacher with lots of positivity and patience for young students. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend his guitar lessons to other parents. He has equipped her with confidence and good understanding to achieve her recent Grade 2 Acoustic exam with Merit. More...

Q&As

I love teaching something to someone who is there because they genuinely want to get better. I also teach maths, and most students struggling in that subject don't enjoy it, and are there because they struggle with it which means we're fighting an uphill battle from the start. You don't need to convince musicians that this is something worth doing; they have already made that decision (that's not to say they can't change their minds, and that's absolutely fine). I love seeing them see improvement in themselves as if it's magic, but it's actually just small amounts of regular work and good sleep.

If I spend too long working as a part of other people's organizations, especially for relatively small amounts of money, the red mist starts accumulating and I get very frustrated at how much time is being wasted (of my own and in general). I need to be doing something productive and, as a creative person, I need to be being creative. I love teaching (and doing sound) privately. I get to choose when I work (which is often more than I would do in a 9-5), but I'm building something that is mine and benefits me and my family in the long-run. Duff McKagan once said "I couldn't breathe if I wasn't doing music" and I've never related to a quote more in my life.

I will always be honest with students. I'm very positive and encouraging as a teacher, but if something needs work, I won't tell them otherwise. I will tell students exactly what they need to do to get better, provide that platform, but then give them the responsibility of carrying out the necessary steps. That way, when they do better, it's ALL ON THEM. I don't think there is any other way of doing it. I had teachers who did this with me and getting it right is so fulfilling, but for skills that I didn't build, they're because I didn't practise and I work on them now. I will also provide an education in the current music industry and the skills needed to be a part of it. I don't know if other music teachers consider this over just learning to play songs.

In special circumstances I can, but the set-up is complex and expensive and I wouldn't want to put the onus on the students to make sure my sessions are worth the money; that is my job. I'd need their guitars or electric drums DI'd into the sound of a video call, clear video of their playing, noise cancelling headphones and a stable strong wired connection to justify this.

I haven't needed to make changes. The house is always clean. I wash my hands regularly and thoroughly. I cancel in good-time if I am ill. If the student wishes to wear a mask they can.
