Q&As

As the founder and provider of Elmes Homecare, I have personally taken time out of my life to care for an elderly person, my Grandmother. It was evident to me then how much consistency meant to her, meals provided on time, companionship and general help around the house and garden. It was a happy time for me and her. I have never forgotten this experience and it has remained with me for over 20 years. My vision for Elmes Homecare is to offer great personal care, for our carers to become a friend.

The difference with us is personal. My own goal is to make sure that our clients and their families feel included, feel part of Elmes Homecare and have that peace of mind that we are there for them every step of the way.

Many relatives are not only a cherished source of support for their loved ones, they can quickly become their main carers. There can be times when this is demanding, there are times when you may need a holiday or to travel for business, or simply need a few hours in the day to look after yourself. Elmes Homecare can tailor a package of respite care to support you. Whether you need a couple of hours every day, a weekend or a live-in carer for a few days or more, we have a qualified team ready to step in.

Hospital to home
Our hospital to home services return patients to their homes safely, reducing their stay in hospital and avoiding unnecessary delays. We provide hospital aftercare, ensuring that patients are adequately cared for during their recovery period.
We can provide the following patient discharge services:
• Assessing a patient’s care needs prior to discharge
• Creating a post-discharge care plan
• Providing domiciliary care or sitting services for as long as needed.
We also consider practical aspects of social support that, although seemingly small, can have a big impact on whether patients can return home. This can include:
• Preparing the home, setting the heating, changing the bed and housekeeping
• Buying changes of clothes and personal care items
• Purchasing food items
• Picking up and delivering medication
• Assessing recovery progress and working with other healthcare professionals where required including GPs, district nurse teams etc.

We can look after your loved ones and their pets whilst you have a break.
Care giving is a demanding job and no one is equipped to do it alone. Find out how respite care from Elmes Homecare can give you a break by calling 0800 009 6926
What is respite care?
🏡Respite care provides temporary relief for a primary caregiver, enabling you to take a much-needed break from the demands of caregiving for a sick, aging, or disabled family member.
🏡Respite care can take place in your own home, whether it’s for just a few hours a week or an extended vacation. Seeking respite care can help ease the burden of family caregiving and help to relieve stress, restore your energy, and promote balance in your life. It can also prevent you from becoming exhausted, isolated, or even burned out.
🏡Respite care can benefit the person you’re caring for too, providing them with variety, stimulation, and a welcome change of routine.
Seeking support and maintaining your own health are key to managing your role as a caregiver, so it’s not selfish to need time to yourself. If you’re overwhelmed by the daily grind of caregiving, your patience and compassion will wear thin, you’ll find it harder to connect with the person you’re caring for, and you’ll probably both feel unfulfilled. After a break to recharge your batteries, though, you’ll feel more energetic, focused, and reinvigorated about your caregiving role. You may even be able to pick up tips on new ways to tackle common problems you face as a caregiver, helping to make the caregiving journey a more enjoyable and rewarding experience for both you and the loved one in your care.

From feeding the cat to walking the dog
You may find that the prospect of caring for your beloved pet becomes more daunting if you are aging, unwell or if you have a relative who feels they can no longer provide full support for their pets any more. That’s where pet care at home can help.
Your pet is part of your family, and there are great benefits to being able to stay in the comfort of your own home with the love and companionship of your furry friend.
Every single one of our carers, companions and personal assistants go through full DBS checks and strict reference checks to ensure that they can provide the perfect care package – not only for you, but for your pets too.

Getting ready in the morning can be a hassle, especially if you care for loved ones.
Many seniors with dementia fight bathing and grooming each day.
It’s important to keep your older adult’s body clean to prevent skin infections and reduce the risk of urinary tract infections.
Here's some tips to make the task easier each day:
1. Stick to a daily routine
2. Encourage with positive reinforcement

4. Temperature control - Warm, not hot water, bathroom and towels
5. Provide support and use safety equipment
6. Gentle hand held shower head
7. No upsetting surprises while bathing
8. Hire a care professional to bath, groom and get ready for the day ahead.
Elmes Homecare helps families everyday with providing assistance with daily activities of living for themselves or a loved one.

Are you or a loved one receiving care through Social Services?
Are you dissatisfied with the company they have arranged to support you?
Do you think that you have to accept it because it's council funded?
No you don't
There is always the option of Direct payments which allows you to choose your own support team.
Call us for more information.
Our Management team can talk you through the whole process.
The benefits of direct payments
Direct payments give you more flexibility over how your care and support is arranged and provided.
For example, you could choose to:
• have a provider that has experience working extensively with your type of care needs
• have a provider that has been recommended to you
• have a provider that can help you get to shops or social events
NOT ideal for hiring private carers unless you are happy to register as an employer and be responsible for their tax and insurance.
Employing your own carer or personal assistant
If you decide to hire a private carer not through an agency yourself, it’s important to know the responsibilities you’ll have as an employer. You will be treated as an employer if you hire a personal carer directly.
Although support from the council should be available, you may need to carry out
• background checks or references
• tax
• National Insurance
• pension contributions

Why Homecare support isn’t just for the elderly 💙
Despite what the name implies, it’s not always seniors who need home care
Sometimes an individual contracts an unexpected but devastating illness or has an accident and requires temporary support, Elmes Homecare understands those situations along with many others, and we’re here to offer solutions.
Short-Term Health Setbacks
Imagine falling and breaking a leg or having a serious illness requiring surgery and lengthy recovery time. While help from family and friends is welcomed and, in some cases, ideal, it isn’t always possible.
Reasons such as work commitments or family obligations can impede even the most well-intentioned family member or friend. However, when circumstances change and the unforeseen occurs, turning to professionals can help alleviate a lot of stress. And family and friends can still offer their support.
When recovering from an unexpected illness or accident, it’s difficult to perform the daily tasks necessary to living our lives.
Household chores, paying bills, even personal hygiene can all be affected. In-home care assistance can help with the following and much more:
Bathing
Cooking
Laundry
Cleaning
Assistance with medications
Personal care
Shopping
All of our caregivers maintain the highest standards of professionalism and are trained to the highest level.
At Elmes Homecare we understand the importance of pairing you or your loved one with a care giver you can trust, and we strive to match our referrals to fit each person’s individual needs.
When life throws you a curveball, Elmes Homecare is there to offer service, support, and a helping hand.

Remembering to take medication when you're unwell or are taking a number of medications can be difficult for many older adults. Our domiciliary care team can be on hand to help.
