My 9 year old son has been learning to kick box at Devon Martial Arts for about 18 months and he enjoys every minute of his lessons. The balance of fun, discipline and teaching is brilliant and my son's teacher is a great role model. The club is also extremely well organised. Comes highly recommended. More...

My first instructor encouraged me to take up taekwon do as I was sitting watching my daughters training and thinking maybe I could do this. I was 49 at the time( never too old to start). I enjoy the family friendly aspect of the school as well as the mutual respect between all, no matter what age, gender or belt grade and the willingness of of everyone to share the knowledge of the art. We all learn and develop from the help of each other. I have been training for more than 10 years and find the more I learn about Taekwon do, there is much more to discover which to me is quite exciting and leads to a deeper understanding of Taekwon do. I would recommend training at this school to anyone of any age. The instructors and talented and make lesson fun and enjoyable. They have supported me throughout the 11 years that I have trained in Tae Kwon do and have become like a second family. Tae Kwon do is an amazing skill to learn, as well as being good exercise, it helps you build in self confidence, self control and just makes you a more positive person in life. More...

I was a proud member of Devon Martial Arts for three years and in P.U.M.A. for three years before that, I was sad to leave after taking the decision to move for a new job. I cannot praise highly enough the schools and the instructors, I feel privaleged to have met and trained with them. The schools offer a warm welcome to everybody, it's an aspect of the martial art which is especially well respected at Devon Marital Arts. The instructors and some of the students at these schools perform at a very high, international standard, and as part of the P.U.M.A. organisation there are lots of opportunities to reach such a high level (if you want to!). Taekwon Do has had a transformative effect on my life, increasing my self confidence and fitness massively. For this reason I recommend it to everyone. More...

The fitness, conditioning, kicking and sparring work is very good at this dojang (school) and the students are in good shape. Pattern work is good and hopefully it can be even better going forward. This school also does regular self-defence work with its students and not many schools will do this at all, or they'll do it once in a blue moon. The instructors are helpful and encouraging. One of the instructors was on Team GB TKD and really knows his footwork, kicking and tactics when it comes to sparring. This school offers many sessions throughout the week/weekend which is really useful for busy parents.

Most schools in martial arts have a big drop out rate, maybe just 1/100 will make black belt/sash. But this school has a dozen or more kids/teens at black stripe level ready to become BBs (in addition to the other BBs) and their dropout rate is low. Kids smile a lot and enjoy themselves and the social aspect in the school is healthy; there is a good team ethic.

The school partakes in charity work and has raised thousands through Children in Need and Sport Relief. They also do demonstrations to promote the students/school in the local community. Martial arts in general, can be quite repetitive (by the nature of the study). Overall, this school provides a broad range of TKD curriculum and the students don't get bored. Students also get the chance to do additional seminars and to learn and grade for weapons patches in a safe way; e.g. Bo staff (Jang Bong) and nunchaku. DMA instructors have expertise and enthusiasm for these two weapons.

No school is perfect but would I recommend this dojang to other parents? Yes. It's also good value for money.

4.5/5.

Q&As

Teaching all ages from all walks of life. Seeing them achieve their goals, enjoy their training and become great people is the most rewarding.

My instructor the Legendary Master Jonny Black began teaching me in 1995 and inspired me to become an instructor and open my own schools now known as Devon Martial Arts.

Devon Martial Arts was founded in 2004 when Mr Brett Dowling IV launched the first P.U.M.A. Junior Kickboxing school, located in Exeter and supported by the late great Master Johnny Black VIII Degree. He brought Taekwon-Do to the South West in 1976, to whom Brett was honoured as his assistant within Exeter Taekwon-Do before taking on the school full time from his Master.

Within our schools we have seen many excel in their chosen disciplines, becoming respected black belts, role models, instructors, regional, national and world level competitors.

The school is also home to Mr Danny Dowling III, instructor, multiple title holder and ex GB Olympic squad member.

Devon Martial Arts has something for everyone of all abilities and ages, whether its Taekwon-Do, Kickboxing or Little Puma’s (4-6 year olds), and additionally tuition in weapons, Bo/Long Staff and Legend Bruce Lee’s favourite, Nunchaku.

Martial arts has been proven to develop confidence, motor function as well as having a positive effect on practitioners moral code and conduct.

Classes are instructed by brothers Brett Dowling IV Degree in Taekwon-Do, 4th Degree in Kickboxing and Danny Dowling III Dregree in Taekwon-Do, 2nd Degree in Kickboxing. Both Brett and Danny had the honour of to train with the Founder of Taekwon-Do, Major General Choi Hong Hi IX Degree in 2000. Over the years they have also taken opportunities to learn from Kickboxing Pioneer and undefeated middleweight champion, Mr Bill ‘Superfoot’ Wallace, amongst many other experts and masters within the Martial Art world.

We look forward to welcoming you to our Martial Arts family and helping you to achieve your goals from the beginning of your Martial Art journey.

Little Puma’s is a bite sized Martial Arts class designed to challenge and motivate 4-7 year olds to develop and encourage life skills. There are five key areas we concentrate on:
· Self esteem
· Discipline
· Channelling aggression
· Confidence
· Self-defence and stranger awareness
There are 8 Little PUMA grading’s. These grading’s are based on set themes. The themes revolve around encouraging the children’s self-awareness, self-protection, self-development and confidence as well as working together as a team, giving encouragement and respect for each other.
The grading themes are not set in any particular order but include the following:
· Balance
· Focus/concentration
· Stranger danger/emergency skills
· Co-ordination
· Teamwork/leadership
· Fitness
· Discipline
· Memory

It takes approximately 3 months between each grading and as each one is successful the Little Puma will progress through a colour sequence of belts – up to black belt, before moving up to the Junior Taekwon-Do or Kickboxing class. On each successful grading your child will receive a new belt, a theme badge to be sewn on to their training suit and certificate of achievement.
