Never had a bad experience here. The staff are attentive, but not standing over you.Early bird special set menus are good value for money. Reasonable priced cocktails and the desserts are delightful.Good aperol spritzers. More...
Incredible food. Amazing atmosphere. Excellent service. Very well priced. Can't recommend enough.
This is the oldest eating establishment in Newcastle &, it claims, in the UK.
Have a drink in the bar or walk around the quadrant, it is so atmospheric. The food is top notch too. There are cookery classes, private dining.... More...
Visited for a floral demonstration by Northumberland Flowers followed by a three course ladies lunch. Fabulous form beginning to end. The staff were all lovely right from making the booking .Special thanks to Charlotte who sorted out my gift voucher. The set menu had at least four choices of starter, mains and desert. The food was all delicious and served piping hot with a glass of nice wine. Would recommend and will definitely be back. More...
Very nice food, cooked perfectly, the flavours are amazing. It's definitely one of the best places I've eaten at. Would definitely recommend a visit. Very nice building and atmosphere too More...
Great food, great service, superb atmosphere, great place. Food beautifully cooked. Note that the menu is accurate, if it says potato it means one potato! Excellent atmosphere and the building is amazing though the music could have been more to our taste and the bar counter perhaps less cluttered. We had a wonderful evening. More...
Really classy restaurant, comfortable, relaxed and friendly service. Staff were knowledgeable about the meals, and ensured that they checked on ingredients to meet dietary requirements. All four of us were thrilled with the food, it was well cooked and plentiful. Overall the evening presented us with good value for money, in a pleasant environment. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this restaurant. More...
My first visit here. Top quality food. Excellent staff were helpful and friendly. Loved the surroundings. Must be one of the oldest buildings in Newcastle. More expensive than most restaurants in Newcastle but you do get what you pay for. More...
Great service, great food. The staff are so lovely and helpful. We really enjoyed the food. They had a good deal for an early dinner when we visited, so check for that before you make a booking
Good food. The menu wasn’t for veggies but for meat eaters it was perfect. The price was near the high end, but the quality was very good. However it was the service I found outstanding, every member of staff( either in the bar or Resturant) was exceptionally friendly and helpful. It’s great service which always makes our night and brings us back. More...
Personally I would have preferred larger portions but meal was full of flavour and really nice. Can be a little on the expensive side but they do a great 2 or 3 course set menu offer early doors. Staff great, really friendly. So much more to Blackfriars than just the restaurant though with plenty of cookery classes, beer, wine and whiskey tasting nights, medieval themed banquets... Great place for a treat or something different and set in a beautiful building, adds to the uniqueness and atmosphere More...
Stunning location in the heart of Newcastle. Offers a great menu with varied choices, very reasonably priced. Very attentive staff providing good service. Nice selection of gins and mixers. Look out for theme nights, tasting events and cookery courses. More...
Diverse menu. Excellent preparation. Quality rather than quantity, but at a reasonable price. The setting is a former Dominican refectory in a friary. I had the beef wellington. Crisp and flaky with a nice rich sticky sauce. It come with a small piece of flank. The flank was 2-3 ounces and the wellington 2 inches long. Mashed peas were nicely seasoned. Fascinating classes are offered, and may be the real bargain here, but they fill a month in advance. More...
I had a 3 course meal of scallops, fillet steak, and cheese board with the port pairing. I'm usually wary ordering steaks because I rarely get them cooked properly.
I ordered medium rare and I cannot fault it at all. Presentation of all the dishes were second only to the flavours.
The service was impeccable and all staff were well informed and so polite. The complimentary amuse-bouche were a perfect appetiser for the table.
I cannot recommend Blackfriars enough and will certainly return to try more of the menu. More...
Beautiful building, medieval vibe inside, lovely staff. The menu looks pretty standard & the portions aren't large, but it tastes absolutely divine & actually there is just the right amount for 3 courses to not leave you feeling over full. I don't remember there being any steps to get in but the space available for manoeuvre wouldn't be enough for a wheelchair and the outside ground is uneven. The restaurant was accommodating of children & babies. More...
Great night out.. we tried the wine tasting event accompanied by food. Absolutely 5 star all the way Great venue, great food, great wine also the chap who hosted event was very knowledgeable. Would highly recommend.
Had a meal with family here recently. What a place, fantastic food, great service and atmosphere. Highly recommend.
Staff we're brilliant. Unfortunately, a woman had fallen down some stairs before we sat down and couldnt move. However, the staff were amazing and gave us a free bottle of sparkling Champaign! Really impressed with how they handled it. Also, can't fault the food it was unreal. More...
Wonderful atmosphere, very friendly, professional service and delicious food. I had the traditional Sunday roast beef lunch and all of the accompanying vegetables were very carefully cooked and presented, which isn't always the case in other restaurants. Gorgeous desserts too!
Excellent service at a historic venue. Upmarket budget, elegant menu. Special events catered for.
We visited Blackfriars with a friend who was in town. The restaurant is a beautiful old building with lots of charm, with a dining area, a great hall (for functions) and a bar in a separate building across the way.
Our meals were lovely, as was the service. The staff were extremely friendly and courteous. The ambience of the restaurant area is relaxed and laid back. It's just a beautiful place to dine!
Downsides were we had to wait a little longer than expected for our meal (the lovely waiter brought us across some drinks to soften the delay) and my vegetarian friend was limited in her choice, as despite being advertised as vegetarian-friendly, there were only two veggie meals on the menu.
The cost for the main meal for three, a nice bottle of wine, plus three desserts, was £140. Definitely not a budget option, but the food was lovely and service great. Diners before 7 pm can choose from a separate set menu which we didn't try, yet seemed good value. More...
Lovely place, extremely patient waiting staff, food was mostly nice if a bit overcooked. I went for the pan fried chicken which was delicious. It was the extras that cost us. I was advised to buy chips (£4 I think) which were totally unnecessary, and the beef Wellington which my friend ate was extra as well. Also, his beef was overdone and the random loose beef that was on the side (outside the Wellington!) was extremely fatty and difficult to eat. I would come again More...
Great food, fantastic venue - definitely highly recommended. We had the early dinner menu: £21 for a 3 course set menu was well worth it.
Great location and the food is always top notch. British style cuisine with plenty of locally sourced ingredients.
'twas a nice olde eatery. Oldest in the UK apparently. Decor is more contemporary and there are quite lot of classes that you can attend here. Food was solid, if a little uninspiring. More...
Fabulous bar and restaurant would highly recommend the 3 course set menu. The choice was superb and great value. The Hanging Beef was delicious served rare. Staff are first rate, knowledgeable and friendly service. More...
Lovely historic setting. We had bar snacks and hot drinks, 3°c in Newcastle today! Staff were friendly and professional. Warm reception and spotless facilities!.
Incredible food and service. I believe you get what you pay for in this world but this place is a notch above. Fantastic.
Fabulous food. Really interesting to try such a delicious gallimorphry of food. Our American visitors loved it. It is expensive but worth it.
Fine dining food in a nice relaxed setting. A pleasant place for dinner, blown away by the modern British cuisine. Great staff to boot as well!!
Food is 10 out of 10 of modern gourmet British. The ambiance is possibly 8/10 as low ceiling and hard surfaces make it not quiet. Better for work/social outings than romantic dinners. More...
Set into a building that originally served as a medieval friarage, Blackfriars has a rustic appeal. Thankfully the food lives up to the setting and was equally remarkable.
The best Sunday dinner in Newcastle! Staff are friendly and very helpful. Would highly recommend
Great ambience, comfy drinks bar, interesting menu. Dover sole very well cooked, on the bone, moist and full of flavour. My 2nd visit, definitely will return More...
Absolutely 1st class day. The Ready Steady Cook workshop was informative and great fun followed by a superb lunch and an historical treasure hunt. Great staff, great surroundings, beautiful food and a 'must visit' destination! Fabulous -would unreservedly recommend More...
What a wonderful meal, fantastic building and good service. Highly recommend.
Lovely surprise,We came across it whilst pondering in Stowell St,what a find.Clean, excellent welcome from the waitress, good value lunch menu, well deserved awards on display, good feel to the place,
Great place, good staff and food is great. But yeh, cost is a bit much. Stiffed for still water £3.50 - school girl error not requesting tap. Then 2 courses early bird menu one person drinking £63! Need to save up before I go again to sit in an almost empty restaurant. Must be paying for the amazing refit More...
Good service. Lovely food and drinks. Above average cost 2 starters, 2 mains, 2 drinks = £80
Excellent service. Wonderful sticky glazed pork belly. Yummy lemon posset.
Had a great dining experience. Lovely food. Made my day. Great location in the heart of city center.
Blackfriars is a hidden gem - one of the finest restaurants in Newcastle. The setting, the decor, the music, the ambience, and above all, the staff and the food are all excellent.
Unique dining experience in the heart of the city. Very good food and friendly staff. Nice ambiance. Strongly recommended. Also have a banquet hall for large events. More...
