What makes a great website?
A great website - like a great brand - is a site that represents your business accurately, honestly and attractively by making it look professional, relevant and interesting from the second it loads the homepage.
A well optimised site, with as-quick-as-possible page load times, also helps to enhance the users views of the site andkeep them from wandering away during that crucial 6 to 8 seconds after clicking 'return' on your site url.
SEO - the mystical art of Search Engine Optimisation! Not so mystical when done professionally. If your business is in a highly competitive market for single keywords, great results for short and longtail phrases related to your business can bring in more enquiries simply by muscling their way into top page Google searches.
And finally, all of the above put together professionally by a Designer rather than an IT coder will mean the site works properly, but looks great, all at a price that reflects the quality, but doesn't cost the earth.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
What is your product or service and the market you are aiming at?
Do you have an existing Corporate brand/style we will be following?
Do you have your own high quality images for us to use for your product?
Do you have your own copy and descriptions of your business products/services?
What are your timescales for going 'live' with your site?
Answering the above questions enables an accurate quote and deadline.
Describe your creative process.
Research and discussion with the client about their product/service and what they are aiming to achieve, so we have a good background knowledge in order to develop a relevant style for the client.
In the case of Logo Design / Corporate Branding, this starts with developing multiple ideas where the client may then work their way through several revisions of these ideas until the final desired design is reached - in our case, usually after only 2 or 3 revisions because of the work we do prior to the design process beginning.
Having Illustration and Design as a background, along with experience in the mechanics of print and online processes, means we can create bespoke designs that tie in seamlessly to it's final format, be that printed material, packaging, livery, or anything online.
What information do you need from a client before you can start work?
As per the "Questions" section:
What the client's product or service is and the market they are aiming at.
Is there an existing Corporate brand/style we will be following?
Are there existing high quality images for us to use for your project?
Do you have existing text/information/description of your business' products/services?
What are your timescales?
Is there a specific budget we have to work within? If so, that is it? This means we can work to your budget regardless of whether it's below what we would charge by adjusting the level of what we will be able to create for you.
In the case of website design, do you have your own domain names/hosting space/emails etc?
What do you love most about your job?
Creating new designs from a blank canvas. The actual process of creating a design that looks aesthetically pleasing but is also relevant to the product or service - and works across many formats - is a wonderfully satisfying way to essentially 'solve a problem' and is when we are the most happy in our job!
The skill set that is used to bring the created design to the page or the screen is more mechanical with different challenges, but is also something we relish.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I was an avid 'artist' from my earliest memories as a child. I was never going to do anything else but work as a Designer or Illustrator.
