Sensei Reymond is a wonderful teacher. He has been training for over 30 years in Shorin Ryu. I have studied with Sensei for almost 20 years. I have rarely found a better Sensei in the martial arts world. He works hard with white belts up to black belts and is truly a caring, intelligent instructor to help you on your martial arts path. Affiliating myself with the Ueshiro Downtown Shorin-Ryu Karate Dojo has been a life changing experience. I don't know if the feeling will be mutual but there is only one way to find out. Come try a class.

I have trained at Ueshiro Downtown Shorin-Ryu karate dojo for almost three years and it has been a great experience. I always look forward to coming to classes and being challenged to improve my martial arts skills, physical fitness, and mental discipline. The instructors and senior students are skilled, knowledgable, and generous with their time in teaching students of all levels. What got me hooked was the no-frills quality instruction, the strong sense of community, and the very reasonable price tag, all of which can be hard to find in NYC. :)Give this place a try. I highly recommend it. More...

Great experience at the downtown dojo. I not only received a great work out but the traditional style practiced was quite enlightening.

Small class size with plenty of personal attention and an excellent, non-stop work out that can be tailored to any level, brand-new white belt through high-ranking black belt. Plenty of classes to fit your schedule (including weekends) and a great deal for unlimited monthly classes. This is a non-competition, traditional style of karate that strives to stick to its roots, using old-school techniques to protect yourself in modern day situations. Conveniently located inside Tribeca Health & Fitness--towels and amenities provided. Steps away from major subway lines. I took off 1 star because you can smell pizza cooking next door--makes me so hungry! More...

The Downtown Karate Dojo is the perfect venue for anyone interested in karate as a traditional martial art: no broken noses, no tournament trophies, no outrageous fees or black spandex gi's. Just an excellent all-around training regime that develops one's body, mind and spirit for dealing with life's many challenges. Classes are small enough to offer a lot of individual attention, and the focus is on mutual support as opposed to competition. For me, taking classes here was initially about letting off steam, unplugging from the iPhone, and building up a set of practical skills. While that's still true, I keep coming back because the workouts and people are truly inspiring, and I leave each time with a sense of accomplishment. More...

Excellent instruction, great people.
The school is conveniently located - has morning, evening and weekend classes. Karate is a great total body workout that allows you to advance your training intensity at your own pace.

This is a great traditional karate school. The instructors are very friendly and always welcoming of new students. The gym has showers, which you'll want to use after the workout!
