Sue is a very talented photographer. She captured the essence of my workshops so well, I was bowled over. She’s very easy to work with and so unobtrusive during the session. Thank you!

Q&As

Being in the right place at the right time, having the technique and skills to get the shot, the right equipment can help, knowing your subject and how to get the best from it and the right attitude. Planning is also very important, knowing the shots you want, having the right props, exploring the angles, knowing the brief, understanding the light. Being able to manipulate the image in post production completes the picture. Some people say the picture should be perfect straight out of camera and while there's a great deal of truth in that, if you are using really good equipment then you get really fine detail and things that you don't notice with the naked eye stand out horribly in the final image and need work.

If it's a commercial client and we are talking product photography I'll want to know about their ideal customer first because that is key to developing a range of images that meet market needs and desires. Then I'll want to know more about the client, their branding and what they want from the shoot.

If it's a family shoot, then I'll want to know what they are looking for from the images, such as wall art or greeting cards, for wall art it is helpful to know the style and colouring of the room the wall art will be going into as the images will need to be a positive addition to the surroundings, not a stark difference. Then I like to know more about the client, and what they are looking for, do they want a relaxed style or formal shots.

Whether I'm working with a commercial client or a family shoot it is really important to me that there is a rapport between us because only then can we make really great images, and anything less isn't what I'm about.

Well obviously I adore photography, so much I generally have a camera with me always, but I love the interaction with people, finding out what makes them tick, exploring possibilities and meeting new people, visiting new places.

I love product and food photography as it gives the variety I crave, there's always something different and sometimes new challenges, and I love a challenge.

I've been self-employed for longer than I can remember in one way or another. I need the creative freedom that self-employment brings. I'm not a natural 9-5 person, my creativity doesn't work that way. Sure I can turn up for a scheduled shoot and work but that's my choice I'm not being told I 'must'. I love the fact that one day I can be up at dawn to shoot with a client on the beach, the next day I can work until late in the studio shooting products and in between I may do something totally different. If creativity strikes in the middle of the night (as it does) then provided I'm not working with a client first thing I can get up and go explore the creativity, and I love all of that.

I believe that you should always have a rapport with the people you choose to work with if you want the best results, so that is paramount for me as I hope it would be for my clients. I will work with my clients to establish what they want/need - even if they come to me with a clear idea to be sure we deliver fantastic imagery that meets their needs.
