My wife and I visited Ian's workshop with an early 19C side table whose top had previously suffered a botched restoration which removed water marks but destroyed the patina of the wood. To our great joy on seeing Ian's painstaking work the table is once more all of a piece. The top now shows all the ageing and detail in the wood to be expected of a 200 year old table. Ten years ago I fell in love with a rosewood dining set inlaid with mother of pearl and could not resist buying the sideboard, table and 8 chairs.
However about a year ago I had some misfortune with 2 of the chairs. One began coming apart at the joints and gluing did not work. The other was very badly damaged with one of the bowed struts on the upright back having completely broken. This was not a clean break but was a long splintered ugly break. I was sure that any repairs -  albeit an improvement on a broken chair that could not be used - would be obvious. 
I was absolutely amazed and delighted therefore to find that following Ian's skillful repair I cannot detect that the chair was ever broken. In fact I would defy anyone to identify which of the set of 8 had been so badly damaged. He was also able to take the other chair apart, remove the glue from my botched attempts to repair it, and put it together so it is sturdy once again.
