We just finished watching the CD of our engagement shoot. We cannot pick a favourite as they are all amazing! We had so much fun doing the shoot as Bex made us feel relaxed and had so many good ideas it felt effortless. Which is saying something as neither of us ever feel comfortable in front of the camera normally. Bex did our wedding and was amazing from start to finish. She met us about a month and half ahead of the day and listened to exactly what we wanted and I felt she really understood what our expectations were. She was so awesome throughout the whole day, capturing every moment, with stunning pictures. Bex wasn't noticeable during the day as we didn't want a photographer in our face throughout. She was able to move around the wedding without being noticed with ease taking perfect photos from all great angles. She then had no problem coming out in the horrible weather to capture the best photos, which are so much more than we could have ever of expected and will keep forever. I couldn't recommend her highly enough. It was a pleasure to have her on the day as she is also a wicked person with a great sense of humour and we both couldn't be happier with the pictures. I turned up to a mini shoot with 3 miserable children. As soon as we arrived Bex put us at ease and had smiles on all my little cherubs within minutes. Her photography speaks for itself but the experience exceeded all expectations. What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?
Observation.
When you take a step back and watch, you see the most beautiful, tender moments that are otherwise missed. I call these 'in between' moments. The moments that string our lives together... not the dramatic 'I do' kiss or the teethy grin of the cutting of the cake, but the look back down the aisle as the bride approaches, the tear wiped away during the speeches... the rugby-esque stance of the bridesmaid at the bouquet toss......
When at an engagement shoot - I observe my clients around each other - how they naturally behave, touch, hug, kiss - that way, when the big day comes, the poses I ask for never feel forced or awkward, they are an exaggeration of how my couples naturally interact.
I notice all the shizzle that others miss, I photograph it and BOOM. It's yours to look at forever.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
I ask all my clients what they want the 'feel' of their photography to be - relaxed, vintage, festival, natural - these are all popular themes at the moment.
I ask what the most important aspect of their photography is - good views & dramatic backgrounds, emotion, formal shots - a few examples of what people value most.
I find out about my clients, their interests, hobbies, how they met etc. this gives me an insight into who they are so I can project that through photography.
What do you love most about your job?
This sounds so SO cheesy, but I love love. When I edit my photoshoots, my other half will often say 'you know you're grinning, don't you?' and it's true... I love being a spectator of people's love!
I always cry at weddings (subtly, don't worry...!) I just get swept up in it all & being a creative and emotional person enables me to focus on the beauty of each moment as it unfolds.
Honestly, I'm such a sucker for a romantic story & love helping my couples re-tell theirs.
I love meeting new people, I really am a people person & love learning about people, what they do & what inspires them. I've kept in touch with so many of the people I've taken photos of and many of my families come back and see me year on year to update their walls and albums.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I got my first camera when I was 7 from my Grandparents for Christmas. I used to save my pocket money for getting my films developed in Boots. (Thankfully, I've honed my skills since then and my finger no longer obstructs each image...)
I've never been one for office work, 9-5 jobs or years of study... in my late teens and early twenties I spent time travelling the world and working in ski resorts... when it came down to 'getting a proper job' I decided to take photography more seriously, a couple of qualifications later & I booked my first client - never looked back!
