My young German Shepherd dog and I recently had a horrific experience with Partners Dog Training in Cave Creek, AZ. My dog is from a well-known, careful, reputable breeder. She came to live with me November 10 and I hoped to quickly add to her good house manners with obedience training and socialization. A lot of Partners’ resources go to marketing, and I was impressed. But I had misgivings from arrival on day 1 when I realized I hadn’t been given information regarding lodging at the property and that the property itself isn’t exactly a shining example of a training facility. It’s old, it hasn’t been kept up to date (even the training cot that was used for my dog’s demo was tattered). I’m not going to go into every negative experience we suffered in the 15 days that my dog was at the facility for the three-week Behavior Camp. It would be too much to read. Communications from staff were often conflicting or unprofessional: “your dog is the finest GSD to come into this facility” to “your dog is neurotic and has major separation anxiety, she screams when crated and we have to put an e-collar on and put her in isolation”; “I love your dog so much, if you decide to give her up, I will take her”; “I should have fired you when you came in the door with this dog and I’m firing you now (this was when I asked that my dog be transferred to another trainer due to lack of progress and so-called separation anxiety); “it was good to see your dog walking calmly beside you when you left” (but my dog was panting frantically and had the tightest pull possible on her lead). Rather than go into every painful experience, I ask that you carefully look into this program before committing not just a lot of money, but your precious pet.

Ask how long the dogs are confined to small kennels overnight. The trainer told me that they we put in for the night at 5pm, taken out next time in the morning at about 6am (“they have to learn how to hold it”).
Ask to see those kennels, not a video.
Ask to see the outdoor runs where the dogs are taken for peeing and pooping, how weather-protected those areas are (it does rain all year in Arizona, but this is especially critical during monsoons).
Ask to see documentation proving how many times/day the dogs are taken out of the small lodgings.
Ask to see the credentials and experience of the trainers, the trainers that your dog will work with, not the founder/owners of the facility.
Ask to see the specific experience of your dog’s trainers with training tools. For example, ask if the trainers who work with your dog are skilled in the proper use of e-collars for training, not as a substitute for a bark collar.
Ask how your dog will be exercised during the program. For example, ask if your dog will have a chance to blow off some steam after working hard, playing with a toy or a ball in one of the yards shown on the promotional videos. Perhaps dragging a long lead around the training floor or being plunked into a crate on the training floor is Partner’s definition of exercise. Or maybe it’s the time during the “free” instruction.

A properly exercised dog in calm, confident conditions with consistent training will learn quickly. We did not experience that at Partners. We’re now trying to recoup our losses and start from a healthier beginning. More...

This place is amazing! We took our pup to the doggy bootcamp and he came back a completely different dog. We would get daily reports telling us what was going well and what they were working on with him, which we always looked forward to reading. Fancy and the other trainers did such a great job at training and loving on our pup! He gets so excited coming back to pet parenting school and seeing all his trainers again. I recently enrolled my dog in the behavior camp at Partners Dog Training. I was so impressed with the training that he received while he was there. I was also very pleased to see how happy he was while staying there. He actually seemed to really enjoy the training and it was obvious that he really liked his trainer and the other staff members. The challenge that I was having with my dog was that he was possessive over me and would sometimes react to other people approaching me. I was skeptical that the trainers could duplicate this behavior while he was at camp, but they were persistent about placing him in situations that might trigger this behavior. Sure enough he became possessive over his trainer, which allowed her to correct and work on managing this behavior. Wow... what a benefit this will be to me at home! My dog was also extremely crate avoidant which limited my ability to confine him at home. After only a few days with Emily, he was a master at going into his crate! This is a real game changer for me! I am really thankful for Partners help with my dog and teaching me how to handle these situations. We have been clients of Partners Dog Training School for many years. The new expansion and growth at Partners is very exciting. From the actual facilities to the digital connection and technology, they continue to provide excellent training while improving the client experience. We have a working line German Shepherd dog, and let me tell you there are no days off for her as she needs to “work” every day. Partners provides the training, activity and discipline needed for our dog daily in their boarding programs so we have a well behaved and happy dog when we return from our travels. My favorite new addition to the school is the daily report cards sent from the training sessions. We recently took our two golden retrievers here to receive Rattlesnake Avoidance Training. The whole program was extremely well organized and I get very confident in what our dogs learned. We just came back from our first snake training for our Tibetan Terrier at Partners. They were very helpful in explaining how their process worked. They also were very calm with our dog which helped her be less anxious.  Thankfully she's a very quick learner so within five minutes she had it figured out.  Between the scent and sound training, it's very effective.  We'll be going back in six months for a refresher. Maizie is so much better behaved after the 2 week training at Partners Dog Training. She is able to walk on a leash without pulling and sits on command. She is still rather willful but Malissa at Partners gave us the proper method to correct and work with her. We are looking forward to the 4 Thursdays of group lessons.
The 2 weeks really helped a lot with her behavior.

Partners snake training did not work for our dog. If your dog is stubborn, or difficult to train, don't expect Partners to be successful. The dog was bitten in less then a month after recurring training. I would recommend you look for someone else. More...

Our puppy started off scared and reactive to other dogs. Working with Partners we learned the proper technique to introduce dogs, triggers and signals to watch for stress and aggression, basic commands to help with confidence and so much more! Partners does a great job working with both you and your dog. I worked with the trainer Emily with my dog Lola and my dog Gus. She is very thoughtful about how she approaches our lesson. She listens to my concerns and the things that I really need help with. She has a lot of experience and coaches you through the very small details of how to teach your dog each part of the lesson. I would recommend Partners and specifically Emily to anyone who is looking to enhance the relationship between themselves and their dog. Having both of my dogs receive training and working with them has made them not only more obedient but also all around better family members. Partner's took care of my beloved Koko, a 9 month old Dutch Shepherd, for 16 days during the Christmas holiday. Meghan, who goes by Fancy, was Koko's trainer. Fancy did a tremendous job with Koko! Before we dropped Koko off for the training she was fairly well behaved. Yet, she was pushy with the grandkids and other dogs. At times she had a mind of her own. Thus recall was not a sure thing and she would bolt to anything she was more interested in seeing if she felt like it. Bike rides at times were an adrenaline rush on the way to a broken neck. Mine not Koko's. Enter Partners and Fancy the Trainer. I received emails while on vacation in regards to Koko's status and progress. When we picked up Koko Fancy and several of the Partners staff spent 1.5 hours with my wife and me to demonstrate what Koko had learned and to teach us how to keep the progress locked in. All I can say is WOW! Koko is, after the professional training at partners, an awesome smart well behaved dog. She has her commands down pat. Sit, Stay, Leave, Done, Down, Emergency Down, Heal, and come. She is a rock star. Koko is no longer pushy with the grandkids or other dogs. She is even more of a cuddler than before. Very calm and well mannered. Riding a bike to give her a good run is joy. There is zero tugging on the leash. The time and money was extremely well spent. We are signed up for more of the puppy classes. We will do Obidence level 2. We are also signed up for the Foundation Classes for competitive agility course competitions. I highly recommend Partners. I brought in my 5 year old American Staffordshire Terrier Bruce. He was dealing with several issues most notably dog aggression and separation anxiety. I dropped him off and didn’t see him for two weeks and was absolutely floored at the progress he had made. He was so confident and his confidence around other dogs was through the roof. We were so amazed by the progress that we brought our 18 month old American Staffordshire Terrier Zoe there and are awaiting the progress she will make! Partners took care of my German shepherd dog while I was away on business and he got twice daily training sessions with Nicole who did a wonderful job.  He was so happy and eager working with her when I got back so I know he was well cared for.   She definitely has a way with dogs and training them.  And she trained me when I got back as to how I should handle him.  He's behaving wonderfully.  This is a well organized place and very busy!!  I would recommend them.  I've been boarding and training with them and our dogs over the many years we've been here. I'm so thrilled with partners! I've taken one of my dogs here a few times - level 1/2 obedience and most recently he stayed for 21 days at behavior camp. He had a lot of problems with fear aggression and territorial problems. Emily was his trainer and, though I was hesitant to drop my baby boy off for so long, I'm so happy I did. He is coping very well, learning good practices and his obedience is stronger than ever. Through continued lessons I'm happy that he & I will both feel comfortable going out and adventuring together.
