The bar was busy and I enjoyed a beer while watching football on the big TV.||My room was basic, but having said that it was a pleasant break from the generic cloned rooms in most hotels today. This is an old building so my room had lots of character. Very comfy bed and en suite shower.||My evening meal was absolutely delicious and the staff very friendly and efficient. Breakfast was served by the owner and again was delicious fare: full cooked Scottish breakfast and a gallon of tea - magic!||All in all, this lacks the frills of your chain hotel, but sometimes that's just ideal. We have just stayed for 4 nights at the hotel whilst the 2018 Open Golf was on nearby. We had a lovely ensuite room, with a view over to the Montrose Basin. Breakfast was always good. We ate once in the restaurant, which was also very nice. The hotel is in a quiet side road, but closeby to the local buses, which link well with the train station. We stayed here on our honeymoon adventure around Scotland. Only booked for 1 night and booked last minute. Dogs allowed so it was perfect for us. We were more than pleasantly surprised at the room. It was spacious and the bathroom looked newly refurbished. We went down the the bar for some food. Ordered the prawns and buffalo wings starter, and both had special tomahawk steak. Whole meal was delicious from start to finish. Really nice quality of food, and really well-cooked. Couldn’t fault anything at all. The locals were really friendly also and even bought us some drinks when they realised we were on honeymoon. All in all a fab stay and would 100% recommend for anyone in that area. More...

This is a family run pub/restaurant with accommodation and providing a good choice of pub fare with friendly staff. It is used extensively by locals giving it a good atmosphere Locally we had an example of Scottish helpfulness when a garage fixed a windscreen wiper with a simple click and avoided an unecessary round trip of 30 miles

Went into bar after meal which was excellent to allow staff to clear up. We had a few drinks and was enjoying the ambience of the bar trying to relax when the jukebox was put on and you couldn't have a conversation as it drowned everything out. It was so loud people were having to shout above the noise. I had only intended to stay one night and join a vessel at the local port the next day. It turns out the vessel was delayed several days and so my stay at the Hillside Hotel lasted 4 nights. When I first approached the management at the very last minute to ask if they could accommodate me for another night or possibly more, they calmly organised for me to stay in the same room. No fuss, no dramas, just a great "can do" attitude.||The room was great value for money, clean, presentable and warm. The bed was super comfy, a good shower with plenty of hot water, even a small desk for me to work at each day and free WIFI. Breakfast and evening meals are cooked beautifully, a great selection on the menu ( I thoroughly recommend the stars and stripes burger - amazing) and a great bar with a sports screen which allowed me to follow the Champions League. We had a very pleasant meal here last Saturday. Excellent choice and the food was delicious. We were very specific as to how we wanted our son’s cheeseburger should be: plain, no salad, no relish, no other additional treats.
