Technical Design
Graeme was exemplary is all respects he quickly understood the brief and was able to compile the requisite 3D & 2D designs in a effective and speedier manner. I continue to work with him on development of the product/project. He is easy to work with More...
What do you love most about your job?
I enjoy bring ideas into reality, using a combination of product design, engineering and prototyping skills.
What inspired you to start your own business?
After working for a leading London product design consultancy for 12 years, I set up my own product design consultancy business in 2008. I enjoy helping individuals and companies develop their ideas into products, using my design expertise to develop products through manufacture into production.
Why should our clients choose you?
I undertake all stages of product development, from concept generation through to detailed design and design for manufacture. I use 3D CAD extensively and am very experienced designing injection moulded components.
I also have worked with many toolmakers and moulders throughout my 25 years in the industry, both UK and Far East and have spent time overseeing manufacture in China, Singapore and Malaysia.
Innovation
Innovation is at the heart of what Gm Design Development does. We are able to assist you in designing new products for your market, developing new commercial opportunities. Generating new product ideas is crucial to any company to keep it competitive. We can facilitate brainstorming and innovation workshops to help identify new commercial opportunities for your existing products and technology.
Concept generation
Creative design is at the heart of any new product. It is often the most valuable phase within a project.
We ensure all elements of the design are considered. These include:
- The development of a brand – creating a strong brand that reinforces its value and differentiates it from other products
- Consideration of current trends and predicting future ones
- Creativity – personal creativity, using creative thinking techniques to develop fresh ideas
- Generation of IP through new ideas
- Appearance – consider colours, finish and materials
Visualisation
Visualisation is an important tool to enable designs to be reviewed and evaluated prior to detailed design and manufacture. Either rendering 2D sketches & drawings, or photo-realistic renders directly from the 3D CAD data. These images enable important market research to be carried out to ensure the design meets expectations and provides the evidence for the choice of design.
Design & engineering
ProENGINEER & SolidWorks 3D CAD software forms the backbone to our engineering design services.
It allows complex assemblies to be fully defined, including electronic sub-assemblies that might be integral to the product. Components are fully engineered in detail ready for production. A full manufacturing specification is produced including 2D component/assembly drawings along with a full Bill of Materials.
3D CAD allows us to undertake some fundamental analysis of components, including FEA (finite element analysis), clearance and interference checks and draft analysis to ensure components are suitable for manufacture. Mechanisms can be modelled and animated to analyse moving components too.
Prototyping
Prototyping is an important activity in proving out form, function and technology at an early stage of the design process.
It forms a key part of the development process at Gm Design Development. Visual models can allow customer research to be carried out. Ergonomic models can help to ensure the product can be used easily and comfortably. More technical based models and rigs can be prototyped to prove out the mechanical design prior to manufacture.
Rapid prototyping methods such as stereo-lithography (SLA) are also used extensively to prototype components that replicate exactly the 3D CAD. This enables fully defined mouldings to be evaluated prior to tooling.
We can offer the full range of services including:
- Ergonomic models
- Rapid prototyping – Stereo-lithography (SLA)
- Technical models – test rigs
- Fully finished appearance models
- 3D Printing
- CNC machining
Design for manufacture
Ensuring your designs meet manufacturing requirements
Gm Design Development has forged strong ties over the past 15 years with a number of manufacturers and works closely with them to ensure there are no unwanted surprises. It is a critical phase in any project, as well as often an expensive purchase for the client, so details need to be right to ensure expensive tool-re-work is avoided.
