Fotovida Photography Q&A
What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?
Sara: I would say there are many factors that contribute to capturing a great photograph of a person. If it is a candid shot, then patience, timing, positioning, creativity and luck! If it is a posed shot, then firstly, you have to care about the subject of your photo and want to show them in their best light. You need to connect with them; if you build a relationship with them and communicate clearly, they will relax and trust you. Then you have to be both determined and patient. Personally, I try to capture the essence of a person, shining through.
Backdrops (location), framing, proximity to the subject, light, time of day, weather and equipment are also important. As you can see, photographers have a lot to think about and need to have many skills as well as talent!
Doug: Being ready to capture authentic moments, being willing to sacrifice your own physical comfort (lay on a dirty floor, get wet, etc) and connecting with your subject
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
Regardless of the project, we need to understand what the expectations of the client are. To find this out, we will ask many questions and for feedback on your favourites from our photography collection, also , we build a Pinterest board with the client, so they can share their ideas with us through the medium of pictures, which is usually easier than with words. We keep the channels of communication open throughout the project and if it's a wedding, then we will meet in person to talk through details closer to the time.
What do you love most about your job?
Sara: That is a really hard question. I love having a satisfied customer, but the whole process is fun and rewarding.
If I am photographing a wedding, I love when everything we have planned for comes together and I love having a front row seat to such an important day in the lives of the couple tying the knot. It's an honour to be involved and it makes me value my own marriage more every time. Photographing a wedding with your husband definitely brings you closer together.
Doug: The satisfaction of getting a great shot and making people happy
What inspired you to start your own business?
Sara: I have always had an interest in photography. As a teenager this moved on to media arts, but it has come back to photography now that I have my own family. Photographing your own children is an inspiration. Additionally, I had been jealous of wedding photographers for years, but it took me a long time to realise the solution! I thought that running a photography business would suit my skills well, as I am creative, self-motivated, enjoy working with people, am well-organised and love being challenged. Before Fotovida, I had been head of department in a school, so I had management skills and training and was good at building a rapport with children.
Why should our clients choose you?
We are dedicated to giving our clients what they want and put all our effort into giving it to them. We are trustworthy, caring, thoughtful and reliable.
They will have beautiful photos that capture their memories and last them a lifetime. They will not be disappointed!
