I've worked as a DJ since the early 90s and have worked in music, entertainment and theatre ever since.
In terms of what I do as a DJ, the short answer is 'whatever you want me to do'! It's kind of odd but with a lot of DJs out there that is actually really unusual - I'm sure we've all been at events, whatever they might be - functions, Weddings and parties - where the DJ seems to be a law unto themselves, plays whatever they like and pays no mind whatsoever to what the client or the guests actually want! If you came back the following week you may well find they'd be playing exactly the same music to a completely different crowd of people!
I think it's really important that the music for your function is as unique, well thought out and put together as the rest of your event. To that end I always suggest that you either give me some kind of an indication of your favourites together with what you know friends and family will like, or at the very least a list of say half a dozen 'must plays', half a dozen 'would like to hear' and also half a dozen 'absolutely do not plays'.
Either way it gives me a great snapshot of what you like which then helps fill out the rest of the evening's music, together with requests from you and your guests on the night.
As well as a DJ I can also source all kinds of other entertainment if you need it - anything from a table magician to a band or even a full cabaret show to make your function utterly unique!

What’s the secret to keeping a party dancing all night long?
Most important thing of all is to do your homework - talk and listen to your clients when they're booking you - they know their likes and dislikes and they've known their guests, friends and family a lot longer than you so will know what they like too! Every party is and should be unique and special and the music is a massive part of that.
Also keep an eye on people - not just the dancefloor but the bar, outside, other rooms etc as well - this will give you great clues as to what people are liking and doing, what's working, what's not.
It sounds really obvious but - TAKE REQUESTS! Some DJs seem to ignore them and go with their own 'standard' playlists, fatal! As well as the relationship you've built with the clients you only have a short time to build a rapport with everyone else so make the most of the opportunity.
How would you describe your ‘style’?
I guess I do tend to focus on the music without too much talking except where it's essential. Clients and guests generally tell me they prefer this approach as a lot of people tend to find a lot of chatter distracting and even irritating. I firmly believe that the tunes should be front and centre, to that end I use the best quality sound equipment and carry a vast selection to choose from.
What do you love most about your job?
I've always loved music from an early age, it triggers so many awesome memories and feelings. The thing I love most is helping people to bring out their own love of music and what's special to them and their guests. It makes the event for them and means that every day in the 'DJ office' is completely different to the last - every day or night is unique!
Why should our clients choose you?
I tend to get most of my DJ work by word of mouth - either friends, venues or previous clients pass on my details. Often by by the time we get to have a chat, other people have done the hard work for me! I love that first chat with a client - whether it's a bride and groom, someone planning a special party or someone organising a corporate function - it's great when people realise that they're talking to someone who genuinely loves music and is drawing out their love of music too to make the party uniquely 'theirs' for the night.
Whoever you choose to provide the music at your party, do try and have a good chat with them and make sure you click and can be completely confident that they'll do exactly what you want on the night.
