How can someone tell if their loft is suitable for conversion?
The first and most important thing is the internal height of the existing loft, from the top of the ceiling joist to underneath the ridgeboard in the apex. Height needs to be 2,500mm to suitably convert.
The second consideration is the pitch of the roof. In general the pitch is fine from 30 degrees plus. The higher the pitch angle, the higher the central head height is likely to be.
The third thing to consider is the footprint of the existing loft space. As a minimum rule of thumb, internal walls should measure 5,500mm side to side inclusive of chimney and 7,500mm front to back.
Run us through the different stages in the loft conversion process - what’s involved?
At the begining the bulk of materials needed to build loft conversion are delivered and loaded onto the scaffold. Then we cut a hole into the roof, which we use to gain access to the loft. We instal steel beams to support the new, independent floor and to support the weight of the roof. Next we fit new floor joists and plumbers and electricians may be called in at this stage. The Local Authority building control officer will inspect the work at this stage to ensure that everything is being done.. After inspect we start building dormers , gables and we put new roof tiles. When the roof is weather protection we start built any internal walls and the new flooring is fixing down. Then the electricians and plumbers can put new pipes for radiators, switches, sockets and so on. Next step is insulation all roof. The Local Authority building control officer may wish to inspect the work again at this stage. After inspect we cut and fit new plasterboard wall covering then we fit new staircase and all the new rooms and stairwell can be platsering. After allowing sufficient drying time, plumber will attach radiators, sanitary ware and so on. the electician will fit switches, light fittings, smoke detectors, and the carpenter will fit doors, latches, architraves, skirting, handrails and spindles.
