Piano Lessons

Carla is teaching our two girls piano via Skype. Neither have played before, but Carla is incredibly patient and kind and they're both making real progress already after just a few weeks. She sends notes after each lesson and records herself playing some of the tunes during the lesson, which has been really helpful for me as well as them when it comes to practising. I was a bit unsure how effective remote learning would be for music, but Carla has converted me! More...

Q&As

I love the joy I see on people's faces when things suddenly become clear to them and they achieve something they never thought they could.

I have taught in schools, both as an instrumental and class teacher, but I particularly love the opportunity to help people of all age ranges, ability levels and backgrounds that teaching privately affords.

WHY CHOOSE ME AS YOUR TEACHER?

In addition to the well-known advantages of learning any musical instrument (improved co-ordination, fine motor skills, problem solving skills, patience etc.) there are further benefits to choosing an experienced and qualified teacher:

* Make continuous progress at your own rate – Lessons are tailored to your needs, gently moving you forward at a pace which is comfortable and right for you.

* Learn from a friendly, experienced, and qualified teacher – I am a graduate of the Royal College of Music and a qualified class teacher, with experience of teaching music and instruments at primary, secondary and adult education levels, in class, group and one-to-one tuition. With over 40 years of success in teaching you can rest assured you are in good hands.

* Play the kind of music you enjoy – Although originally classically trained, my tastes are varied and my approach is to teach a technique that will enable you to play whatever style of music you most enjoy. Once you have learned the basic techniques you choose the music you want to learn.

* Explore a wide range of musical styles – If you aren’t sure what style of music you prefer, or just want some variety, we can try music from a range styles and cultures – again, you choose!

* Develop skills that will enable you to play any music you want – You will learn a technique that is not specific to one particular style. Once you have learned the basics that technique can be applied to any style of music you want to explore.

* Have fun through success! – Everyone enjoys doing things they are good at. The skills I will teach you will ensure your continued success and enjoyment … providing you practise regularly!

I have been teaching remotely via Skype for a number of years, since I moved to Wales. Most of the students in my former teaching practice decided to stay with me and try lessons by Skype, rather than having find a new teacher, and have really appreciated the benefits. In fact, not only are many of them still with me years later, but I have even taken on their siblings, who have only ever learned with me through Skype. One student's family moved back to the USA some years ago, and have continued to take lessons with my via Skype, including studying for intermediate and advanced level music examinations. Exam results remain equally as high whether lessons are taken face to face or online - 100% pass, with most achieving merits or distinctions.

I have a fully equipped studio with everything needed to ensure high quality online lessons. Multiple cameras enable me to show views of hand positions and particular aspects of technique from angles that would not be possible in a face to face setting. Top of the range microphones ensure the highest sound quality. Detailed lesson notes are taken during lessons and provided to students in pdf format through their own personal folder in cloud storage, ensuring that nothing is forgotten. Music theory is marked electronically and placed in the students' online folder, as is any additional worksheets, teaching guides, music we cover etc. Videos, tailored to the student's specific needs are made during lessons, and can be saved so they are available to be referred to at any time, as often as you wish.

In addition, I always tell students to contact me vis Skype messenger at any time when they have a question, rather than waiting until the next lesson, to avoid learning something in an incorrect way that would then need to be unlearned.

Though many students who had initially begin learning with me in face to face lessons, were sceptical as to how remote-learning would work at first, now they all love the advantages of learning in this way, and don't want to go back!

All lessons are provided remotely, via Skype. Having taught online for a number of years, since long before the Covid pandemic, I am highly experienced in teaching in this way. Skype lessons are equally as effective as face to face lessons, a fact that is borne out by the continuing high standard of examination results students achieve. In addition , the many advantages of remote-learning mean that once they have tried it, students don't want to go back to more traditional learning methods!

Services

Friendly, Qualified and Experienced Teacher
I am a qualified teacher (Graduate of the Royal College of Music, University of London Institute of Education, and University of Wales Trinity St. David) and have enjoyed over 40 years of success in helping people to realise their musical dreams. Students can choose to play only for pleasure, playing music of their choice (I can arrange any piece for any instrument and ability level) or they may decide to follow the more formal path of taking ABRSM exams - I enjoy a 100% pass rate, with most students achieving merits or distinctions.

Currently lessons are provided online via Skype. This may be a new concept to you, but I have been teaching via Skype for some time and have continued to enjoy great success in terms of the progress students make and examination results, both with the traditional exam format, and with the new video-based performance examinations. Please see below for further information.

SKYPE LESSONS:
Music teaching via Skype is the ideal online solution for anyone who wants to study music, whether they wish to follow a formal path or just play for fun and relaxation.
All you need is a webcam (built in to most laptops and tablets) and a good internet connection. Skype software is free to download, and to use, which means everyone can have access to high quality 'virtual' music lessons.

I have a fully equipped music studio which is set up with everything needed to provide high quality interactive tuition via Skype: multiple cameras provide views from angles impossible to achieve in face to face lessons; high-quality sound is achieved with top-of-the-range microphones; animated keyboard and fretboard that show you the notes I am playing in real time to aid with learning; videos tailored to your individual needs provide a resource you can return to whenever you wish; detailed notes taken during each lesson ensure that nothing will be forgotten. In addition, I am available for questions through Skype at any time between lessons.

Benefits of Skype tuition include:
• Access to an excellent teacher: It is better to have Skype tuition with an excellent teacher than to have in-person lessons with a less-skilled teacher. Skype tuition means students have access to the best teachers without being restricted only to those in their local region.
• Improved opportunities for learning: with technology it is now possible to offer an improved learning experience, with videos, multiple camera views, animated real-time instrument views etc., that are simply not possible in a face-to-face setting. In fact, all my former face-to-face students love the benefits of online tuition so much that none of them want to return to the 'old way'!
• Convenience: Skype lessons mean you no longer have to spend up to 30 minutes each way travelling to and from lessons, leaving you more time to to do other things.
• Fewer missed lessons: If students forget a lesson the teacher can make a reminder call, and the lesson can begin there and then - the lack of travelling saves lesson time, and reduces missed lessons, ensuring full value for money.
• Immediate practicing: Students can practise immediately after the lesson, while ideas are fresh and when energy levels are still high. The immediacy of this practice session will always be of higher quality, than practise done the next day.
• Siblings don’t have to wait: Brothers and sisters can do whatever they like while the lesson is in process – no more having to sit still and be quiet through their sibling's lesson!
• Warming up: Students can warm up before their lesson, so they are likely to be playing at their best immediately during the lesson. Piano students can also play their own instrument. Both of these benefits mean that lesson time is maximised, since there is no need to warm up or adjust to the instrument in the lesson.
• Diagnose some problems more quickly: Sometimes the technical or musical problems students experience in their lesson can be an unexpected product of their instrument, or the practise environment at home. When the teacher sees the student in their home set up through online tuition, these factors can be identified immediately and addressed promptly.
• No need for transport: Lessons need no longer be missed because of a car breakdown or repair, or because no-one can drive students to the teacher. Again this means fewer missed lessons, which improves continuity and leads to increased progress.

Please feel free to ask if you have any questions relating to Skype lessons.
