A group of 5 of us plus the dog went here for sunday lunch. The staff were very friendly and made us all very welcome. Burt, the dog was very impressed with the service he got including a bowl of water serval treats from the dog biscuit jar on the bar and a visit from the chef with a meat off cut. The humans in the party were not left out being well served with very taste and large portions of excellent food. Between us we cover traditional, Jamaican and vegetarian options all of which were flavours. The bar was well stocked with a selection of wines and of course harveys and Longman ales. This is a little off our normal patch but will definitely be going back when next we are that way. If you are at all close would recommend The Blacksmiths for great tasting ood at very reasonable prices. More...

The management and owners are amazing couldn’t do enough for you . Owner gave us lift to the wedding we were attending and collected us. Staff are so friendly even their dogs Roxy and Bruno. Our room was very quaint and cottage looking but the whole property could do with a paint job and new carpets throughout. Room was very warm but they do have a large fan if needed. More...

If you're looking for a gourmet gastro pub for foodies I'd keep driving. If you're looking for a warm welcome, friendly locals and good value tasty grub on the other hand it's definitely worth a stop. My wife had the macaroni cheese and really rated it. I had ham egg and chips and my daughter, scampi. No complaints and left full and happy. Lovely decor, friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere. May well stop again next time we're passing through. One night stay for ferry crossing Newhaven to Dieppe. Rooms were tidy and clean. Food was great and host was very friendly. Only concern was loud road noise as in a busy main road which only quietened between midnight and 5am. Couldn’t fault the service and effort put in to make us welcome . More...

Very friendly hosts and very dog friendly too! Vintage/original feel feel to the pub which is nice in these days of zero atmosphere in many places. The place is showing its age but the room was spotless if a bit cramped. ( the dog had to sleep in the shower otherwise I may have ended up in his bed if I got up in the night). The bed was very comfy.I love the fact that they do rip you off with silly dog fees!!! Thank you for a very pleasant stay!! More...

We went for a walk along the South Downs which entailed a stop over in the BlackSmith's Arms for a Sunday Roast. There were was a vegetarian option and several meat dishes, which all fed hungry hikers! The vegetables were on separate, shared dishes, which surprisingly worked quite well as some people liked a little less on their plate. There was more than enough gravy to go round, and the pork as well as the nut roasts were super yummy. Personally there could have been a bit more pork crackling and maybe some red cabbage. The staff was very friendly and the food came out super quick! Overall, a good experience to finish of a walk on the Downs! More...

Hayley and Mark were very welcoming to all our family, especially the children of which there were many. Nothing was too much trouble both in the planning stage and on the day. The three course hot meal was served when it suited us and was enjoyed by all. Reasonable prices for food and drinks. My Partner and I stayed at fhe BlackSmiths Arms after Christmas it was our first visit. We were pleasantly surprised with the accommodation as we hadn’t stayed in a pub before. The room was lovely, nice comfortable bed and lovely fluffy towels that were changed each day. The breakfast was good as well but it was a shame there weren’t any pastries or bread rolls just a cooked breakfast of egg and bacon. The first night we ate in the pub my disappointment was that they had run out of lamb shank and I didn’t really fancy anything else so it was a bit difficult for me, but the sausages were ok. If you have a room beside the main road it can be a bit noisy, otherwise I would recommend this pub for somewhere to stay. More...
