4.5 out 5. I wrote a review back in April and I wasn’t very complimentary. I feel the need to explain how different our experience was this time around. Really tasty, well prepared dishes. Had the 3 course dinner and it was a delight, only criticism was there wasn’t enough potatoes/veg with the main courses but aside form that it was really impressive. Great to spend the rest of the evening in the lounge/bar it’s a great venue for a special occasion. More...

I attended Backwell House for a festive afternoon tea with some friends and family this week. Firstly I must say a massive thank you to all the team at Backwell house, you are all so accommodating and friendly. The festive afternoon tea consisted of lovely fresh sandwiches, brilliant savoury items which were a little cheese and onion tart, sausage roll and a risotto ball, and a selection of cakes including chocolate mousse, cheese cake, macaroons, gingerbread, Victoria sponge and a little mince pie! The scones were incredible, still warm from the oven with lovely fresh clotted cream and jam. A very well done to the chefs and the waiters and waitresses especially our server Niko who was very attentive and a very interesting character!|| More...

What can I say! Backwell House has it all - from start to finish, this once spectacular country home is the perfect venue for any celebration, big or small. The organisation and correspondence was impeccably managed and coordinated from start to finish. Clear, precise, accommodating and so friendly. The venue is just fabulous - altho a county estate venue with spectacular grounds and views, it is cosy, beautifully decorated, has a sense of ‘warmth’ and intimacy whilst still retaining a real sense of grandeur and character of its age. The fabulous staff encourage each party to put their own stamp on their special occasion and cannot do enough to help. To top it all, the food was past excellent for a very reasonable price. Service was laid back but exceedingly professional. We were not rushed or waiting for any service and had first class communication at every stage. All in all, a ‘MUST’ visit, even for afternoon tea and cakes! Will definitely be booking it again and highly recommend anyone to visit this wonderful venue and it’s committed staff. Well done to all the staff for making our day perfect - thank you from our whole family - just wish we could have stayed in what I’m sure are the exquisite bedroom accommodations overnight! Thank you again. More...

So... wedding was at Paintworks in Bristol. I had changed our booking from the Avon Gorge to Backwell house shortly before the wedding after hearing about the gorges reputation as a knocking shop of Cliftons. Backwell house what an awesome surprise. We arrived late to be welcomed by Jay ( if I remember right). Jay was house porter and carried Little responsibility. Or so we thought. This guys made our wedding! We arrived at 1:30am. No food available. We had broken one of our many wedding presents which I was still carrying. It was a terrarium. So small glass garden. On arrival I asked Jay for food and to throw away the broken present. He said the kitchens were closed I’ll see what I can do and ‘no I won’t throw the terrarium away’|Next thing he arrives at our bedroom door with a beautiful spread of sandwiches and he has replanted the terrarium and labelled our terrarium 2. I only noticed this the next morning. Sorry yes taken so long! But Jay the discrete night porter is destined for great things. What he probably thought as a little gesture completely made our wedding day. His gesture is one of the things we talk about most. Thank Jay. Again sorry for the delay. Beautiful hotel, but most importantly beautiful people. Thank you. So glad I made that choice. More...

Me and my wife recently got married at Backwell House in North Somerset and could not have been happier! We got engaged and married only within 4 months so everything was somewhat last minute. After a couple months of looking we found Backwell House! It looked perfect however we needed to see it in person, which only made it better. The whole house is kept very clean as well as the beautiful grounds, the design is very nice and we loved the style. It is conveniently located within an easy 20 min drive from the city of Bristol and is close to 2 other Inn/ Pub establishments. The 9 rooms were all unique and fun with amazing views and cozy beds. One of the first and biggest highlights we noticed as soon as we visited was the kindness and helpfulness of the staff. Backwell has a lovely small, tight nit team of staff at the ready to help you with whatever you need. Sam, the manager, always had a huge smile on his face and, like everyone on the team, did several jobs and always went above and beyond. Emily & Emily were who we worked with most in planning the wedding, both have an obvious love for their jobs and are very good at them. Always making sure we had what we needed as well as making sure we gave them what they needed. Two very attentive, talented people, who always made sure everything was how WE wanted and that we were comfortable and happy on the day of the wedding. Niccos was another “Jack of all trades”. He “runs” about the house doing this that and everything. He seemed to work nonstop and always have energy. The whole staff are very professional and polite to everyone who walks through the door. Another massive benefit and outstanding quality of Backwell House is the food. It always comes out in a beautiful presentation and is beyond delicious. There was not one complaint amongst our 50 guests. We have eaten there multiple times for multiple different meals and have never been disappointed.||||All in all, my wife and I could not have picked a better venue and STRONGLY recommend Backwell house to ANYONE getting married, throwing an event, or just looking for a lovely holiday in the North Somerset country side, or even just a lovely meal. Backwell is the place!||||A tremendous thank you to the incredible team at Backwell House. You WILL see us again and we look forward to seeing you aswell.||||-Mr & Mrs Janssen More...

Stayed here for just one night (wished it was longer), having booked two rooms via their website which advertises an upgrade if it's available. We were really happy to check in and discover that one of the rooms had indeed been upgraded so it was larger than we were expecting, and really nice.||||Furnishings were lovely, the bed linen, duvet and pillows were very comfortable, and the towels were very plush. There was a nice view of the rear garden from both rooms, and there was a good TV, good wifi and even bathrobes available too if needed. Tea, coffee, biscuits and even two bottles of water were provided.||||The bathroom had nice toiletries and had a really good, powerful rain shower, but we found the water didn't really contain itself to the area it should have and much of the floor ended up soaking wet - there was underfloor heating however, but it was a bit too warm to switch it on!||||We had a drink in the bar, and later ate dinner in the restaurant (having made reservations in advance). We chose from the a la carte menu, and I had the confit pork, my husband had the steak, and my parents both chose the lamb. We were all happy with our meals (the steak didn't look as good as it could have if I'm honest but was fine, though my pork was excellent and the lamb looked delicious), and whilst the set menu offers good value if you do want three courses, we don't usually eat that many courses so the a la carte menu was perfect for us - though my husband and I did order the sticky toffee pudding for dessert which was also good. The only thing we didn't enjoy so much were the side dishes of vegetables as there was a large amount of samphire (which was a bit woody). I'd definitely eat here again. Breakfast the next morning was delicious too.||||The main thing that came across for me was that the staff here were so friendly and helpful. The lady who checked us in, the ladies who served/helped us in the bar, the gentleman who served us in the restaurant, the gentleman who took our breakfast order and also dealt with our check-out, and the gentleman who was in the reception area as we were leaving and was carrying ladders though I'm not sure of his role (or if he was even staff here!)... all were just so genuinely lovely and seemed to be happy working here. Thank you all so much for a wonderful stay! More...

We stayed at the Backwell House last week in the beginning of our trip to England. To say we enjoyed our time there would be an understatement. I was traveling with my parents (both over 60) and had to initially convince them to stay 20mins outside of Bristol - and it was SO worth it! ||||Backwell is a home over 200 years old and is updated to the comfort and style of the 20th century. The rooms are spacious, clean, cozy and welcoming. The staff was amazing! Everyone was so helpful, friendly and went above and beyond to make our stay perfect. Also worth noting, we did not have a car and there is a bus stop conveniently a few steps down the road from the hotel, making it very easy to get to and from Bristol. ||||The only negative - not staying longer! We dined here last night and had a great time. We went for the early evening fixed price menu and got excellent value for money. If I’d been paying a la carte prices I might have mumbled that the chicken main was dryer than I’d liked and the black pudding in the terrine was almost impossible to detect but balanced against those minor observations I have to say that the setting is superb with lovely views, the decor was fine with comfy chairs and nice table-wear and the service was spot on. Nikos in particular made sure we felt well looked after.|So why no fifth star? The wine. As it was my birthday I thought I’d push the boat out and so chose a Cabernet Sauvignon from the ordinary list and a Pinot Noir from the premium list. Though we felt the Pinot was slightly better, there was no way it was worth more than double the price and when I checked on-line, it appeared the mark up on shop price was much greater than for the Cab Sauv. If that is correct then they should reconsider either their pricing policy or their selection of premium wines. Had it been £10 or £15 less they’d have still made a good profit and gained an extra star, which Nikos and his team well deserved More...

Back in August, we were invited to a 50th birthday party at Backwell House. We had a wonderful experience at Backwell House this weekend. We were having a family celebration for a special birthday which included two surprise guests coming in from the USA; the staff handled it all with professionalism but also with genuine support and enthusiasm , managing to keep it all under wraps, until their entrance to the private dining room. Staff were just marvellous during the stay, nothing was too much trouble; it also helped that the hotel is set in a lovely park with great views west , across to the hills. Throughout our short stay every member of staff was polite and more importantly seemed genuinely happy in their jobs which rubs off on to you as a guest. The lounge was lovely for drinks and the whole place is just very peaceful which is what I wanted. Our room was “Burnett” and was very lovely. It was a tad warm in the room even with the window open as there was no air conditioning but nothing a fan wouldn’t fix. My one criticism of the room would be the shower room. It was neither a wet room nor a shower with a door so the entire floor just becomes flooded after one shower. Something that can be easily resolved and certainly not enough to make me not want to stay again. In fact we talked about returning again maybe in the late Autumn.
