Stayed in the Pendragon suite. Lovely room, 4 poster bed with real fire and huge bath! Staff were very friendly and helpful when you required them. They didn't pester and you were left to wander round as you wished. Afternoon tea was lovely sat by an open fire. Woke up to deer on the front lawn. Very quiet & relaxing. Would definitely return. My lovely daughter-in-law-to-be, who is American, booked this as a treat for me---- and what a treat it is !!! Super warm welcome And, if you're worried about cold draughty castles, don't be- super warm accommodation too ! !). Spacious, luxury room with nice little touches, including a delicious sherry. A wee kitchen down the corridor for guests use, was thoughtful. Breakfast that had absolutely everything you could think of,and more besides. Thoroughly enjoyable. More...

What a great place. A real Victorian country house with plenty of character in all the rooms. A warm welcome is extended to all by all the staff. The open fireplaces creating a warm cosy atmosphere in the lounge and restaurant areas, adding to the relaxed feeling. The breakfasts are great with a great range of good quality items. All the food was excellent, with the evening meals being worthy of top restaurants. Very different from the formal stiffness of other country house hotels, in the best way possible. If you want friendly and different this is the place for you. I loved it. More...

Stayed two nights and loved every bit of it. Will be back for another visit. The whole ambience is just as described on the website and a real joy. Roaring fires, downstairs and a well stocked honesty bar. Staff (and Maisie) are an absolute delight and I have no hesitation in compiling this review. However gremlins can creep in but only one and that was I specifically requested carnation flowers on arrival. Although flowers placed in the room they were not carnations. I recognise that we do not live in a perfect world, things can and do go awry but this place is as near perfect as you can get considering it is a smaller informal hotel and that in itself is part of its charm. Overall cannot commend highly enough and chef worth his weight in gold for mouthwatering cuisine. More...

We’ve just enjoyed a wonderful meal at Augill Castle, it has been an amazing experience. The food was delicious and all locally sourced, which was so lovely. Justin Woods is a fantastic chef and has produced a great menu. The staff were very attentive and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. The castle is beautifully decorated and the atmosphere was lovely, warm and cosy, we felt very welcome and very relaxed. Our hosts Simon and Wendy were excellent, they are so passionate about their home and castle and rightly so, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed their company and we will certainly be back. Overall we loved staying at Augill Castle. Fabulous food, excellent location, great ambience. In fact, the only minor niggle in our accommodation (The Gatehouse), was there was no sink available downstairs, so whenever we wanted to fill the kettle, or wash the pots, we had to go upstairs to the bathroom. I know not all the rooms are the same, so perhaps only applies to the room we were in, and maybe I am being a bit lazy too. More...

Myself and my wife have just spent this weekend at the castle and it's an absolute gem of a place.||||You are given the key to the castle and once inside you are encouraged to treat it like as if it was your own, with free tea and coffee and cake amongst some of the treats. ||||The decor and staff where also excellent and nothing was to much trouble, especially Wendy who was really nice and helped show us around.||||We stayed in the Greystoke room and it was immaculate and very well presented. ||||There is something here for everyone, little cinema, children's dressing up costumes, board games, library and an honestly bar which was fantastic. ||||Will I return, for absolute sure as I believe everyone should stay here at least once in there lifetime. It was great to have the choice of sweet or savoury food, something we had not come across before. The quality was superb and the amount of food was jaw dropping, goody boxes available to take any leftovers home, thank goodness. Quirky, unique, amazing, different etc etc. What a brilliant place! From the welcome by Emily to leaving, this was a great experience. ||If you want staff in uniform, being called sir or madam or expecting the front desk manned etc., then this isn't the place for you. This is a family run establishment that oozes the character of the owners, and includes an honesty bar and cinema room.||At meal time, you sit next to other guests (unless you ask not to) and luckily for us, this worked out extremely well, and we've even exchanged contact details!||I would really recommend this hotel, and plan to visit again. The Castle has kwerkyness about it, which is delightful. The period furniture is not overstated and works well. Our room had a 4 poster bed, which went well with the rest of the furniture. Having been in many hotels world wide I would say that this one is up there in the top 3/4. More...

We stayed in Stable House to celebrate my wife’s 60th Birthday over the weekend and cannot praise Augill Castle highly enough, it’s fabulous. ||The building itself is hugely impressive, the type of accommodation is superb and to top things off, the owners and staff are the perfect hosts who go way beyond all expectation to make your stay extremely memorable. We were offered the use of a private room for our evening meal at no extra cost and the owners even prepared the food that we’d brought with us as we needed to dine early. Special praise goes to Bethany for her help in the kitchen, it was very much appreciated.||This is an amazing place. Had a Westmoreland Afternoon Tea at Augill Castle and was thoroughly impressed by every aspect of the experience. The castle is easy to get to as it is close to the A66; just a couple of minutes outside of Brough. The approach to the castle is down a dirt track with signs warning you to look out for red squirrels. Exciting stuff, but we didn't see any . Anyway, back to the afternoon tea... A delicious assortment of sandwiches followed by some excellent cakes, pastries and biscuits along with plain and cherry scones with clotted cream and jam. All this washed down with as much cafetiere coffee and loose leaf tea as we could drink. The castle itself is a beautiful building which has been carefully and tastefully decorated and furnished providing a feel of opulence but not at the expense of welcoming comfort. The staff were great too, regularly checking that everything was ok and that we had enough tea or coffee.I would come back here again without hesitation and would definitely recommend a visit. The castle is beautiful and the atmosphere is so relaxing you just can't help but enjoy it. We would love to come and stay again. Very small point I have to mention. I didn't like it when I arrived but two hours later loved it. we stayed in the greystoke room which is part of the old orangery attached to the castle. then we were given the key to the castle. it is literally help yourself which I loved. we stayed mid week and as me and my wife let ourselves into the castle we were the only ones downstairs in the 5 rooms. there is a bar in the conservatory that is a honesty bar, write down what you have had. I loved being the bar man. then I. found the small cinema with instructions how to turn the projector on etc, brilliant. the only downside the room was great and the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in but little things like the net curtains were grotty and the curtains were mouldy because they were to long and dragging on the floor. the weirdest thing was there was only net curtains up at the bathroom and the owners house looking in and car parked outside the window I had to put a towel up over the window. but all said and done we left more relaxed than we have been in a long time and what I thought wouldn't be our thing I'm thinking give it six months and we will go again. Augill castle really is an amazing place to stay. We only stayed for 2 nights with our daughter - who was extremely excited about staying in a castle. We were given a nice welcome and shown to our room, the orangery. This room was great. Really big with a large comfy bed and lovely bathroom. It also had a separate area for our daughter to sleep. All furnishings and curtains are really good quality - with great thick curtains for keeping the sun out during the summer mornings or evenings. My husband & I stayed here for two nights as a birthday treat. All the staff were welcoming & helpful. When we arrived we had an orientation of the castle & explanation of a little of the history before being showed to our room. We stayed in Appleby which was beautifully decorated. There is however a few steep steps down to the lovely bathroom, equipped with everything but shower gel? No problem, except the steps if you had one two many for your birthday Everything was to a high standard. The bed huge & comfortable, no telephone in the bedroom but if you need anything you just needed to go downstairs to the kitchen, where someone was always readily there to help if needed. There are no tea/coffee facilities in the room but there is a little kitchen area further down the hall where you can find anything you need, including biscuits & trays if you want to take them back to your room. You even have a little decanter of complimentary sherry for a nightcap on your dressing table. Complimentary afternoon tea/coffee & delicious cakes served in the afternoon which we partook in whilst sat in the elegant lounge. We ate at the hotel on the first night which comprises of banquet tables, so everyone gets to know each other & eat together at a set time. The only downfall was we ordered our Italian themed food as informed to enable everyone to sit & eat by 19.30. People were wandering in at different times & our first course didn't arrive until at least 20.00 which was a little late for us. Some parents with children also didn't know the meaning of discipline & children were running in & out screaming whilst we were dining. The food was lovely & tasty & well presented. There is a honesty bar further on from the dining room, which is equipped with everything from beers, ciders, soft drinks, wine, spirits etc. You just serve yourself & write down what you have had & pay at the end of your stay. Overall a fantastic stay, we also benefitted from glorious weather sat outside having a few drinks in beautiful surroundings. Breakfast comprised of help yourself cereals, yoghurt, juices, pastries etc from 8.00 then you could order cooked food from a menu between 9.00 to 10.30 each day. The cooked breakfast was again good quality & hot. We would recommend to others. More...

We had a really nice stay here in July 2019. The location, facilities, and amenities are great, and it was a good and unique base for activities in the lakes region. Breakfasts had ample variety and options.||||I found the weekly “dinner party” a bit oversold based on what is on the website, though I’ll admit it probably depends a bit on the crowd that happens to be there on a given night. Food came out painfully slowly, and while it wasn’t terribly expensive, we felt we had managed better value at nearby gastropubs and ultimately regretted not going to the Bay Horse Winton a second night.||||I get that it’s a niche lodging, but in the end found the price a little high for the experience that we came away with. I also found the extra 100GBP paid for a 5-year-old, especially when they were only given floor mattresses and sheets in the room, was an unnecessary charge. I’d have no trouble recommending it, and I’d be happy to return, as we enjoyed ourselves and the property, but not at the price we paid, as the value-for-money aspect took a bit of the shine off the final experience. Augill is an idiosyncratic castle of class – we've been before and we expect to visit again. We spent 4 days visiting friends and relatives in the area and enjoying the beautiful countryside. On stormy days we love relaxing in the various reception rooms. Over the years we have stayed in swish, in exotic, in posh and in expensive - give me Augill every time! Rather than switch on my random superlative generator, let me just say that it suits us: we love Augill Castle.||The Augill team are friendly, welcoming and charming. Their love of the castle and concern for the wellbeing of the guests is palpable. Breakfasts are outstanding! More...

This place is absolutely amazing! The drive thru the countryside was so beautiful and then we pulled-up to the castle and I was in awe! Then we walked inside and it just continued to get better. The castle is awesome for families, with a playroom with toys, games and dress-up costumes; tennis courts and a playground. The rooms are so cool and beautifully restored. The dinning area and meals were all spot on. We even had afternoon tea with cakes and treats. The location is perfect for exploring the nearby Nation Parks...which are absolutely breathtaking! And after a long day exploring, have a drink in their pub while the kids watch a movie in the cinema. Everything is so thought out and makes your stay so relaxing! I will be recommending this place to everyone I know. More...

After first coming for our honeymoon, we jumped at the chance to come back when invited to a wedding nearby. I will try to sum up why it is such a special space but to be honest, I am almost reluctant to tell anyone else about this absolute gem and don’t think I am eloquent enough to do it justice. I have read the negative reviews with some amusement as I cannot reconcile them with Augill castle.Staff - The proprietor, Simon could not have been more friendly or welcoming and even helped carry my ridiculously heavy suitcase up to our room for me. He even kindly lent my husband a tie at the 11th hour! It’s clear that all of the team support the ethos of this place and it seems they all love to work here. Room- To call it a room does not do it justice....Pendragon is a glorious visual feast with a four poster bed, beautiful views out of the many traditional windows and a wonderfully deep claw foot tub. They had even been so considerate to make sure we were in the same room as last time which is just another thing that adds up to why we love this place.Food- not only is the dining room spectacular but the food is wonderful. Although we did not have an evening meal here, the menu and food itself looked lovely but we did enjoy two superb cooked breakfasts. The bar area is perfect for us - good selection with comfortable seats. The afternoon cake for guests is yet another lovely touch.Decor/surroundings - just picturesque. The grounds are wonderful, the castle itself is incredibly decorated with many traditional features and I really enjoyed reading about the history of it on the discrete information boards.Overall, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend. Even as young couple without children, we were impressed with the entertainment options available for little ones including the cinema room, library full of toys, hold-all in our wardrobe stuffed full of baby/toddler items (‘in case you forgot’), guest kitchen and grounds to explore. This is a real find. The castle is beautiful and set in lovely gardens. The library, lounge and dining room are very atmospheric and there is a games room and an honesty bar. We stayed in the Stable House which has a large double room and a smaller twin one, with 2 bathrooms and a kitchen, as well as an extra room which could also be a bedroom if needed. The decor was lovely, there was a small turret, and a nice private outside area. Huge bathroom with free standing bath. ||Food was very good too. Everything you need from a breakfast. Free tea coffee all day and cake in the afternoons. A set dinner 2 evenings a week and a lighter dinner for 3 other evenings. Alll very nice though not much choice. You all eat on a long table which works quite well. And one day we had afternoon tea in the garden which was just lovely - scones, sandwiches, several different types of cake. ||There isn’t much to do within walking distance though it is about 45 mins to either the Lakes or the Yorkshire Dales. And some castles and waterfalls are nearer. But it is such a nice place to come back to that the distance doesn’t matter! More...

We returned yesterday from a weekend stay as a family of 4. We stayed in the coach house, the accommodation exceeded my expectations, beautifully furnished, exceptionally clean and the kitchen very well equipped, which we made use of for both breakfasts and one evening meal. |There is private out door seating, we didn’t did make use of this when the sun came out.|We didn’t have a meal at the castle but we did enjoy a relaxing drink or 2 in the bar, of which is an honestly bar and very quirky. You can help yourself to tea and nespresso coffee and cake throughout the day, which we did, so thank you! |There is a cinema room with a huge amount of films to choose from, our boys made use of this. |The hotel is beautiful and the more you look the more new things you notice, lovely rooms to sit in, very spacious, an all round lovely place. |Family run and all the staff we came across very friendly. |We had planned a quiet weekend, we walked along the viaduct the first day which is very close to the town and was a lovely walk and walked the surrounding area of the castle the second day. |The town is close by few minutes in a car and costs £12.50 in a taxi, local taxi was reliable and driver very friendly. |Thank you Augill castle we hope to return for another stay. My family totally enjoyed the castle stay in Raisebeck..|On the day of check in, the weather was so awful...but once we entered the castle and brought around. ..our mood were immediately lifted. The castle itself had a lot to do for everyone...even though our times were limited indoor due to the heavy rain...there's movie, train sets, pool table to entertain the adult and kids. The wifi was good too.|||The afternoon tea was also very yummy..it's a must do in the castle!||I might not be able to visit for a long while (coming from Sg)..but I would definitely recommend the castle stay to my home ppl.. Had a lovely experience for afternoon tea at the castle. It was very informal yet dignified. There was as much tea as you could drink and lovely sandwiches, cakes and scones. My Wife and I decided to stay there last week- simply driving up and asking. The owner Wendy was lovely and welcoming, and sprung into action offering us a drink whilst she sorted out a beautiful room for us. |A place like this can be somewhat intimidating in the wrong hands, such is the beauty of this architectural masterpiece. However Simon and Wendy ( I met Simon the following morning ) were delightful and certainly have a calm Informal relaxed attitude that carries their hospitality message through their staff like Sean and Faye who were both superb. Nothing was too much trouble. Kick your shoes off and relax... |Dining was a informal experience where we shared a table with another lovely couple, and after the initial slightly hesitant “ hello” we soon became firm friends and debated the merits of wine from Lebanon. ( Wonderful ) I’m sure this happens a great deal and is an old conversational fashion that is lost in most other establishments nowadays. Truly unique here. |The interior is beautiful and suggests an emotional involvement of the owners that surpasses normal accommodation facilities and furniture. |You should try it. As my wife says.....She always has been slightly affected by an overriding “ princess” personality. Now she has slept in a proper Castle. Wonderful area and the castle, with its own grounds, has plenty to explore. The guest areas are luxurious and charming, with plenty of things to do, or quiet and relaxing enough you can do absolutely nothing and not be disturbed. The staff are friendly but non-intrusive, the food is fresh and delicious - but check the website as they do tell you it's limited! ||||The room was fabulous, with a large, inviting suite, period furniture, beautiful features and every amenity possible. The claw footed bath and four poster bed were only a couple of the highlights of a delightful couple of days spent there. There is plenty to do nearby with several museums and castles in the area, or sit and relax in the music room, library or cinema (or the British a Bar!). You can't possibly go wrong. We have recently returned from a short break.  The setting is beautiful with mountains in the distance.  The castle is set back from the road yet within easy reach of the A66 for easy exploring.   We were welcomed with a smile.||The castle itself is grand.  You are free to explore the grounds and are made to feel very welcome.  Free tea, coffee, water and homemade cakes and biscuits are always available in the bar area.  We ordered afternoon tea which was simply amazing.  Breakfast was ok but pretty standard.  ||We stayed in the Derwent interconnecting rooms.  The decor was lavish and the beds were very comfortable.  The rooms did however feel tired.  Picture frames contained smashed glass in the bathroom, the bathroom mirror was split and the wallpaper was coming away from the walls.  There was evidence of mould on the walls near to the window in the bedroom. There was also alot of dust on the furniture.  Problems like this were also noted in the garden.  For example, the childrens swings appeared slightly unstable, swaying when children played.  The tennis court needed a really good sweep as it was covered with twigs and leaves, appearing unloved - not the glorious courts as advertised.  Minor issued which ultimately made me question the star rating and price of our stay unfortunately.||Ultimately the castle and location is beautiful and we would return for afternoon tea as appose to a stay.  || More...

We stayed here as a family and we really enjoyed it.||We loved all that there is to do for children - the cinema, games room, other kids and the freedon to just run round and enjoy themselves - our little girl didn; t want to leave.||We also loved eating with the other familes - the pizza night was great and excellent food. We also like the large lounge and the bar.||Our room was big and it certainly felt like a castle.||There is only one thing I felt let it down and that was our room could have been cleaner. Don't the bed was clean - nice crisp linen, but overall I felt like the room needed a good clean - mirrors, cobwebs, dust etc. It was only a small thing and we will ceryianly be back, but I am a bit of a clean freak and notice these things!||Thanks for a great stay....... We were welcomed into the castle by Wendy, one half of the owners and were shown around the dining room with two long tables as mealtimes were shared at these tables, then the first of the rooms to sit and relax, or read or chat or play board games, next a bar “mini pub” all set up with everything you need to help yourself to a drink from behind the bar and ran on an honesty book. There was a kettle and everything to make tea and coffee, cake, biscuits and actually this little bar was furnished/fitted out/stocked with absolutely anything you can imagine you would find in such a place. There is a cinema room next to the bat but I never even popped my head in, I wish I had! There was a games room, table tennis and so much more. Going back to our entering the castle, the reception area is huge and has a huge wood burner, comfy chesterfields and I cannot do justice to the description of every inch of this castle because I would want to write a book. I haven’t even come to our room yet!||I had booked Greystoke as it had been described as having been the orangery, I just hadn’t realised we would have to go out of the front door and have our own door from outside but that didn’t cause us a problem. The room was more like a rental property it was not a small square room with little room to swing a cat, nope this is an enormous room furnished in African style (Think Greystoke! Think Tarzan! Think Africa!) lol.||Big furniture, comfy big leather well worn tub chairs, big old wooden drawers with every little thing including a miniature glass decanter filled with sherry and two little glasses, a wooden bird and small wooden carved birds! Terrific arch mirrors with wood, animal hide rugs or faux it doesn’t matter because they were a great addition , hardwood floor with underfloor heating was so cosy as was the feather pillows and linen bedding, perfect.theres a little fridge in the cupboard where you hang your clothes and Wendy or one of her great ladies had put a bottle of milk for you when you wanted a cuppa. One way of describing the room and in fact the hotel itself is staying with an old eccentric aunt! I confess to feeling hesitant about my breakfast being in close quarters to everyone else because I am a little bit anti-social at meal times, but I needn’t have worried and best of all? I could have my daily weetabix with banana lol.||I have travelled round many areas in the uk during my life but have never been to the Durham area and by staying here we were able to see so many beautiful places, especially Durham and so the location of Augill was great for us.||Ps. The lady’s who served our breakfast were terrific especially the lady who told us about Barnard castle , I’m so sorry I never got your name, you are a credit to Wendy and Simon More...

Beautiful location in the country, and we had some wonderful walks. The rooms were very nice and quite unique. No Air conditioning but it was ok. A lot of history in this old castle and the owners have done a lot to renovate and make it very comfortable. Breakfast was quite good. For dinner we went a couple miles to the village just to the north and ate at The Carvery which was quite good. We did not really see any "staff"; there is no one catering to you at the bar or out in the courtyard/lawn area. The bar was an honor system to log what you chose. There is parking. I loved our weekend at Augill Castle. The room was amazing, the food was exquisite and the staff ready to answer any question. The ethos of Augill Castle is a little different to your regular accommodation but very refreshing. One example is that instead of eating at separate tables, guests seat themselves at a long banqueting table and soon make new friends talking to their neighbours. Set in the middle of wonderful countryside but easily accessible from all points Augill ||Castle is a superb place to get away and enjoy one of the most relaxing stays you will||ever get. ||||The drive passes past a pond, a children's playground and some scattering red squirrels as||one sees the splendid castle come into view. We chose Augill castle based on trip advisor reviews, and we spent four nights here using the location as a base for exploring the local area, and overall it was excellent, relaxing in the music room was really chilled and the arrangement for dining meant that we got to meet and speak with people that we otherwise would never have met (from China, America, Hong Kong and the UK). ||||We stayed in the "Appleby" room which was quiet but a god size with a comfy bed, though the child's bed was not that comfortable (a type of thin futon thing you unfold) according to my daughter, so she also tried the sofa too...The TV is a bit dated, but then we weren't there to watch TV. The bathroom is especially note worthy as it was so large it had half a pew as a seat in it to sit on.||||If you want to watch a film, there is a small art-deco style cinema accessed from the bar, a well equipped children's games room is off the music room, and that gets well visited.||||The weather wasn't great during our stay, but that did not impact our enjoyment at all, and the afternoon tea and cakes which we ordered was very generous (though not cheap), but then again, if you want a cheap no frills holiday, go somewhere else, if you want to enjoy things such as good food, good drinks and a great atmosphere then this is worth it.||||Having said that all the food was very good as we also partook of a number of evening platters, beware, the local pubs all seem to offer food but our experience of eating in Kirkby Stephen was not good, and speaking with other guests most of the local pubs in the local area aren't so good either. My advice would be to ask the Augill castle staff where to eat out, as they know the area best, and where to go.||||Talking of the staff, they were all very friendly and approachable.||||Altogether an excellent short stay, thoroughly recommend it. The little playground was very cute and the playroom inside the castle fabulous. Really well thought out catering for all ages. The only downside we had was unfortunately we couldn’t join for dinner as dinner was served too late for our young daughter and as adults there were no exceptions even upon asking to eating earlier or even in our room. Having done a week’s tour visiting castles during the day and at night time staying in various Scottish castles, on the final night of our holiday, my husband and I stayed at Augill Castle at Kirkby Stephen. It was a beautiful, warm, sunny day and from the moment that we drove down the long drive, we could see that at the end of it was exactly the fairytale castle we had hoped with its crenulations, arrow slits and turrets set against a stunning blue sky. ||We had a lovely welcome from Sarah who showed us round the castle, explaining various things and then took us to our room. The room was everything you would want to find in a castle including heavy drapes and a four poster bed. In the corner of the room was a small, heavily carved door which led into the spacious bathroom complete with roll top bath. ||Everything in the castle puts you at ease and it even operates an honesty bar where you can go and help yourself to drinks from behind the bar and just jot down what you’ve had. In addition, in the bar you can help yourself to any of the vast array of choices of tea available together with a slice of delicious homemade cake which is on the house. ||At supper time we were served at the long, communal table in the dining room by John, a friendly chap who works there part-time. He made us feel as though we had known him for ages and nothing was too difficult for him to provide. We had a delicious homemade soup starter followed by homemade bread and freshly made salad with a meat platter and a local cheese platter artistically and appetisingly prepared in the kitchen by Oliver. It was good to find the cheese was perfectly ripe – not too hard and not too soft. This was followed by a homemade almond desert with superb homemade ice cream - delicious!||The next morning we had to leave before the official breakfast time but the yet again there was another friendly member of staff who kindly ensured that we got some breakfast before we left including freshly squeezed orange juice, fresh fruit and berries with yogurt, toast made with homemade bread and we could have also had one of the castle cooked breakfasts but chose to preserve our waistlines!|| Our sincere thanks go to Simon, Sarah, John, Oliver, Lucy and Shaun (both of whom had been involved in our initial arrangements and booking to stay at the castle) as well as the lovely lady who served our breakfast for all they did to make our stay so enjoyable. || ||Augill Castle was just what we had been trying to find and not only the highlight of our trip but the jewel in the crown of all the places we stayed or visited and more than exceeded expectations. We will certainly ensure that we tell all our friends about Augill Castle and we are looking forward to returning before too long More...

Really can't say enough good things about this place. Augill Castle was an incredible and unique experience. If you want an experience where you and the family can really relax in relative luxury while soaking in history and truly feeling like a guest - this is the place. Like the hotels of old where you really meet there other guests and forge new relationships with other, similar travelers. Wendy and her husband have created a veritable oasis in a sea of stuffy 5 star accommodation that can turn off travelers with kids or with a more laid-back disposition, especially in this area of Britain near the lake district. We've stayed in castles and historic properties around the world and I have to admit I've never felt more welcome - more like an actual guest - than in this hotel. One of the great advantages of being retired is that you can travel in the less busy seasons. This April, we spent 4 nights in Augill Castle. The first 2 nights, we were the only guests in the Castle. We were given a key to the front door and told to treat the Castle as our own. So, for 2 nights, we had sole possession of the Drawing Room, Great Hall, Dining Room, Music Room, Library, The Great British Bar in the Conservatory, and The Cinema. The level of trust that the owners give to their guests is exceptional. Despite being the only guests, we were provided each morning with a huge spread of cereals, yoghurts, fruits, nuts, jams and juices, on top of a fresh cooked-to-order breakfast.||Our room was large, with great views over the front grounds. The bath was larger than most hotel bedrooms. The bed was extremely comfortable, we had 4 great nights of sleep. ||After our first 2 nights, we shared the Castle with other guests. Augill encourages guests to dine and socialize together. Breakfast was now full of friendly people, trading great advice on places to visit. I could be here all day writing about This place! What an amazing hotel. It is beautiful, romantic, peaceful and comfortable. The dinner and breakfast was delicious and I love how everyone sits at the same table including the hosts one night of our stay!||You feel so relaxed in all the beautiful sitting areas. There is a cinema room and a fabulous bar in the conservatory. We were even treated to some lovely piano playing by one of the guests children.||They provide coffee and home baking during the day and the staff are all so friendly and helpful.||We ended up here completely by accident after being caught in a snowstorm. The owners Wendy and Simon went above and beyond the call of duty and rescued us even when the army couldn’t they even got us a tow out of a snow drift a couple of days later when the weather was good enough to head home.||We didn’t make it to York where we were headed but we probably had a better time here, You couldn’t ask for better hosts and if I could give higher than 5* I would ||Can’t wait till I get back here someday || More...

We stayed 2 nights in the Pendragon suite and were the only one's there. The bedroom was huge and felt just like staying in a castle. My only complaint was that in all photos we looked at this room had large leather sofa and chairs. The sofa in it was actually a wicker style couch with extremely soft cushions and therefore not at all comfortable to sit in.|We did enjoy having the place to ourselves. Breakfast was very nice and the platters served in the evening tasty. |As other's have stated great facilities for all ages to be kept occupied. We played pool in the library, dressed up,played dominoes and helped ourselves at the bar. All in all an enjoyable stay. More...

More...

Firstly, I would say on our visit to Augill Castle, we didn't fully experience what it has to offer. We only stayed one night, mid-week, (outside of school holidays), so we did not have the opportunity to have the weekend evening meal, nor did we have the evening platter that was on offer, as we opted for a local pub instead. We were not travelling with children so we didn't appreciate all it undoubtedly provides for families. We didn't have good enough weather to appreciate the lovely grounds, and we weren't staying long enough to really use all of the rooms/ facilities. We didn't meet the owners so can't comment on them; the staff were friendly and helpful though. As this was the most expensive of several hotels and B&Bs on our trip, I had high expectations - which were not entirely met. On the positive side the room was a decent size, the bed comfortable and the bathroom nice. The castle was built with rather small windows and the way it is decorated makes it quite dark in the interior - which probably lends itself to cosiness if visiting in colder months with the fires burning. On the other hand the bright floodlights were shining in my face at breakfast making for a strange ambience. The breakfast itself was good and served at a long table encouraging interaction with others, which was sociable. A nice idea to have an honesty bar, but there was only flat prosecco and bottles with less than a glass of wine left in the fridge, maybe this needs monitoring by staff? Another uniqueness compared to every single other place we stayed, was the lack of tea and coffee making facilities in the bedroom, instead one had to go down a hallway with two heavy doors, to a kitchen, where the regular English Breakfast teabags had not been restocked. The setting is lovely, the surrounding countryside is lovely, but for the amount it cost I expected more. I don't mind 'imperfect'; but attention to detail might have made this a 5-star rather than a 3.5 star experience for us. I take reviewing as a responsibility to help other travelers in their choices and I'm just giving an honest opinion. More...

What a fantastic place. As soon as you walk into the castle you are met and shown to the lounge which is very comfortable. You are brought either tea or coffee and then the tea which was and it was fabulous and such a choice. The home made scones were to die for. Wendy the owner came in to check everything was ok, what a lovely lady. The castle is very homely and we will definitely be returning.||Julie and Jim Marsh| More...

We had a terrific time at Augill, it’s a great place to stay, for couples & families alike. The castle has been beautifully & sympathetically restored to glory by live-in owners Wendy & Simon. Decoration & furnishings are high quality with an eclectic array of art & quirky bits & bats adding character. The website makes clear the ethos of Augill is that guests should feel free to ‘have the run of the place’ & you do get that sense as soon as you cross the threshold. It’s stately but not prim or pristine & our 10 year old had a whale of a time, relishing the magic of staying in a castle - without the rules or hushed tone of a posh hotel. As grown ups we were equally pleased with the experience - charming public rooms, well stocked honesty bar, good service, & tasty food. We were also delighted with our room Pendragon, one of a handful within the castle (others are in estate rooms/cottages). Pendragon is glorious, lined with original leaded windows offering lovely garden views & allegedly slept in by Queen Victoria. It features a 4 poster bed, working fireplace & various period pieces including an old organ. All mod cons & plumbing in the bathrooms though, the shower (over a claw foot bath) was piping hot & super powerful. Our visit was over the weekend when dinner is a communal event, a 3 course meal served at 7.30pm on long banquet tables. It’s a laid back, convivial affair & children can dine alongside parents or eat earlier. This set up isn’t forced upon you, alternative options including dining out are possible. I wouldn’t say communal dining is our bag but we really enjoyed it & met some fabulous people. The menu choice is short & food simple but tasty. Service is friendly but low frill - you go get your own wine from the honesty bar to have with dinner & make your own coffee/tea as & when. During the week the hotel offers sharing platters to be taken wherever, plus Afternoon Tea. The breakfast offer was extensive & food excellent, probably the best scrambled egg & smoked salmon I’ve ever had. I’d award the same accolade to their incredible homemade orange cake - simply divine! Augill stands within 20 family friendly acres, there’s a pretty area fronting the property where you can drink & dine, the rest is open field & includes a treehouse, modest swings & an unpolished tennis court. Balls & racquets have seen better days so bring your own if you want a serious game. There’s no booking - if the court is free, away you go. Same with the sweet 12 seater cinema. It’s all very easy going. It’s all rather nice. You’ll have a great time! More...

We loved staying here, our hosts Wendy & Simon were lovely and went out of their way to accommodate us. We had the run of the castle and were made to feel at home straight away. The bedrooms were very comfortable and we loved all the little touches in the bedrooms and around the castle. We spent time in the cinema room watching one of our own DVD's on the big screen while sipping hot chocolate. We had a delicious dinner made for us by Wendy at short notice and enjoyed this in the beautiful dining room. Would thoroughly recommend staying here, we wished we had stayed more than one night. This hotel is a 1840s creation of a man who was trying to out do his brother - and it is a great exuberance of fun. The rooms are comfortable and the breakfast is excellent (& served family style at two very long tables). ||The dinner menu is more limited during the week than on a weekend but even on a Friday evening there was no fish (we had been told there would be fish when we made the reservation) and the only vegetarian option was a nut roll. We ended up eating in Kirkby Stephen -- but without a reservation on a weekend it is hard to find a place.||Still, the people who run it are very nice, and the building plus furnishings are lots of fun. The rooms are huge. More...

Without a doubt, one of the most spectacular places I have ever been lucky enough to visit. The hosts and staff are so welcoming and interesting and always have time for their guests. There is so much to do there yet also the space to relax and unwind with either a complimentary tea or coffee or a drink from the honesty bar. Our children spent hours in the play room and exploring the castle and were sad to leave! I can’t list all the great features the castle has as it has so many - go and see for yourselves, as it is truly amazing! More...
