Staying on site at a historical location was exhilarating. This is a rare opportunity to be able to stay at a medieval Casle, virtually untouched by modern renovations. Don't expect a hotel. Do expect kind staff, good food and overall unique experience without compare. Make sure to take a tour to hear the depth of history this location was a part of. More...

I booked this night away for my husband's birthday, as a surprise.We arrived and were informed that we had a complimentary upgrade to one of the Appleby cottages, which was amazing, thank you! .Our sitting room window was directly outside the keep!! Beauriful when lit with the floodlights at night!|An amazing setting and site!|Enjoyed dinner by candel light, and the great hall was amazing to sit in with the fire glowing!!.|Sadly, one member of staff needs re-trainning, and pronto, as the service delivery was appalling and he is rather rude, and customer care, well hardly any shown I'm afraid. It is such a shame that the hotel and site have it all, and are superb, but the service let's it down, massively!.Not all staff however as Jude, a very young waiter was amazing when he served us during our dinner service - well done Jude!.|Also, the nightporter we spoke to was very very knowledgeable and took the time to speak with us.|It was lovely to see the owner/director Ms Knightingale walk threw the establishment from her living quarters, she even came over and wished us a lovely evening, what a lovely lady!.It was a shame we didn't get to meet her two Irish Wolf Hounds, we waited around on checkout to no avail.|The woodland walk is amazing, such a lovely area to explore on foot!.|Breakfast disappointing, by pass the continental (not worth the money) jump straight in for a cooked breakfast, you won't be disappointed!.|Guided tour was amazing - a very knowledgeable guy takes you round - he has great passion for the place, and it's history!!. WOW! A truly magical experience having stayed for one night that we booked last minute we shall be returning. An exquisite castle being kept unspoilt by modern means our room was magnificent (Clifford room) highly recommended. Don’t miss it! This was our favorite place during our 2 week excursion through the UK. Upon arrival, we were greeted by James, a tall, svelte young man dressed in a dashing dark blue suit with burgundy windowpanes. Some other reviewers refer to him as a butler but I would say he is the host. He kept the fire stoked and brought us drinks and generally attended to all of our needs. The castle is divine. Our room, The Evidence was handsome and filled with dark ornate wood furniture. The castle is old and not perfect but that only lends to the authenticity of your experience. I prefer castles that look and feel old versus ones that have been completely modernized. You will have a true castle experience here. The dinner was delightful. Chris, the chef was superb. He served us sea bass and salad with an amazing chocolate tart and strawberry sorbet, just as we requested. We had a lovey romantic dining experience which I will keep as a surprise for you. Dining in the castle is a must. It was grand to be a queen and king for a day. Our only regret is not staying 2 or 3 nights, as we only allowed for 1. More...

We did the guided tour before we checked in - so we knew more about the castle and its history. It was very informative - with names/dates for everything - and a very excitable guide to take you along. ||||We were made to feel welcome from the start by James who - as we spoke to him more - really added to the stay and the feel of the castle. He was happy to show us the other rooms that were available - as I asked about upgrading. We chose the State Room - which was packed with interesting things and just a nice place to be. ||||We were expecting to join others for the banquet dinner but - as it turned out - we were the only ones eating in the castle that night so they arranged for us to have a private dining experience - in a room on our own - lit just by candlelight - its was incredible! As for the food at dinner - well what can I say - it was just perfect. Great quality - well cooked/presented - delicious. The chef came and spoke to us and that just made it that little bit more personal and special for us.||||If you're looking for a slick/modern place to stay - then this won't be for you - as floors are a bit uneven and worn and creak a lot - some doors are hard to close (bathroom door in State Room) - but you have to remember.....its a centuries old castle and to expect anything different would do it a disservice. Enjoy it for what it is - and the hospitality from all the staff - they take great pride in what they do and to make sure you have a great stay.||||Appleby itself is a beautiful little place - with lots to see and do. Look upon a stay here as an experience rather than a hotel stay as this is like no other hotel I have ever stayed in. Firstly don’t arrive before 3pm. The door is locked. You won’t get in. Secondly choose your room carefully. A lot of rooms don’t have enough-suite facilities. Remember this is a castle that has retained many of its original features. We chose the Hothfield room. A bit small but great views and a big comfy bed. Getting ready for the evening was challenging as there is nowhere to sit and do hair and makeup. One mirror was in the bathroom the other on the inside of the cupboard used as a wardrobe. The evening dining was first rate. Good quality food cooked perfectly, all served in candlelight. Breakfast was a big disappointment. Although supposedly cooked to order, our bacon was dried out and unfit to eat. Everything was lukewarm and lacking in flavour. Toast looked as if it had been put in a toaster for 10 seconds. Most other people eating at the same time as us were voicing the same complaints. We only stayed one night and this was sufficient. I wouldn’t have wanted to stay longer. There didn’t seem to be enough staff and no fully staffed reception area meant that customer service was rather lacking. We struggled to find someone when we wanted drinks or to ask questions. Overall we enjoyed our experience however I can understand why some people are quite dissatisfied with the overall service available. More...

My husband and I have just spent one of the best weekends ever at Appleby castle. From the moment we arrived to when we checked out, the staff couldn’t have been any more attentive||||All of the staff, including the chef made a point of chatting with all of the guests and they all work very hard. It’s a small team and they all seem to be able to turn their hand to any of the jobs that need to be done|||| James the hotel manager, was particularly attentive and made sure we had everything we needed throughout our stay||We stayed in the old servant quarters which are on the 4th floor and our room (Atkinson) was very quirky. The is a massive bed and lovely en suite bathroom but the floor in the bedroom is very uneven and all of the furniture is on a slant because of this. However this just adds to the experience||||We dined by candlelight in a private room and the food was absolutely delicious, as was the breakfast each morning||||We took the castle tour this morning with Kenneth and found this to be very interesting and informative Kenneth definitely has a passion for history!||||There are lovely walks around the castle grounds and we also met Mrs Nightingale, who owns the estate. ||A great weekend and we enjoyed every minute More...

I purchased this as a Birthday Gift for my partner thinking that a stay in a castle would be a different experience, and it certainly was, everything from arrival/check-in to departure/check-out, our entire stay was something special. ||||The Castle is just at the top of the main road through Appleby, we walked into the town each evening for a meal in the pub, then walked home after a few drinks.||||Appleby Castle is a lovely place to stay, full of atmosphere and the interior is like being transported back in time to a lifestyle of Kings, Queens, oil paintings and tapestry on the wall, and suits of armour lining the corridor.||On our final morning we had a very informative tour of the castle – although rather too full of specifics for someone not well-versed in history, I still found it interesting and to see some of the “hidden” aspects of the castle was really nice.||||One afternoon we just spent wandering the grounds, lovely and peaceful stroll along wooded pathways and gardens.||||James was amazing – very pleasant, helpful and excellent customer service throughout, nothing was too much trouble, and service was attentive but unobtrusive – just perfect.||||Our room [Atkinson] was on the 4th floor in the old servants quarters, so well away from any activities; nice and peaceful; we had an en-suite, plus tea and coffee making facilities, plus a huge comfy bed More...

We had a fantastic and very memorable stay here. It is a very historic building which has been beautifully preserved and restored with great character. The bedroom was large and felt very grand. The other rooms were all in keeping with the age and history of the castle. The grounds are very pretty with great views. We did the tour and the tour guide was very enthusiastic. The most memorable part of our stay was the candlelit dinner on our first night; great food and great service. When James, the butler, was around the service throughout the weekend was very good. It fell apart a little at breakfast when he wasn’t there. I felt sorry for the young lad waiting on tables, he struggled to keep up. The owner was there, but neither seemed to notice that they had run out of glasses, run out of bowls, run out of orange juice, run out of milk, that toast wasn’t being served that had been ordered, that not everyone’s order had been taken. Despite that one hiccup the place definitely deserves 5 stars. More...

We recently stayed using a wowcher offer for a half price 1 night stay with evening meal and breakfast which made our stay very good value. ||James was delightful and very helpful with everything we needed, he showed us around and up to our room on arrival. ||The room was on the third floor, there’s no lift which wasn’t a problem, however, it’s something for people to bear in mind! The room was lovely, had everything needed and the bed was very comfortable. The one niggle we had with the room is the slope of the floor and the really steep slope into the bathroom. ||The evening meal turned out to be a banquet which although I found daunting, turned out to be a wonderful experience and the food was a very high standard. ||Breakfast was a different story, once sat in the dining room we waited 45 minutes for our breakfast, there were no choices with the cooked breakfast apart from what type of egg you wanted and the food was very disappointing. We had to ask three times for more milk and the juices were constantly running out and not being refilled until prompted. There was only one person serving and he was not able to manage the demand. ||After we had checked out I realised that I had been charged separately for somebody else’s wine, but this was easily resolved with a phone call. ||Overall we had a lovely stay in a beautiful castle! If you are looking for something a bit different, with history (you can tour the castle no grounds) and friendly people, we would recommend Appleby Castle. More...

Overall a great experience, we had the State Room which was very authentic with a gothic looking 4 poster bed, original tapestries on the wall and great views. The bathroom and spa bath was good too however anyone considering booking this hotel should be aware that not many rooms have a private bathroom! Some are advertised as private, however while only for the use of one room, they are accessed via a public corridor, not from the room itself so if you don't fancy creeping about the corridor in your pj's then check first! ||The public rooms are very authentic for a great castle experience. The dining options are a 3/5 course taster menu, either in the main dining room where the table is a communal dining experience (all sat on one long banquet table), or you can opt for private dining in a candlelit room, for added entertainment they plugged an iPod outside the room playing classical music! The staff are very nice and the food was lovely, although portions are small, and as there is no food options apart from the limited set menu, and food not allowed in, I would eat a large lunch beforehand! We did ask for extra making an excuse we had skipped lunch, and the chef was very obliging and brought us an extra plate of tasty treats however. Breakfast is served in the communal dining hall, the service was ridiculously slow and some items did not arrive at all such as the coffee, we had to ask 2-3 times for glasses for the orange juice and toast. ||The check in is 3pm and we heard from other guests that if you arrive before this you are basically told to go away and come back at 3. Also the same guests told us that you are turfed out at 11am every day if you are staying multiple days. ||There where some aspects of this stay you needed a sense of humour for, it was ran basically like Faulty Towers or some kind of boarding school however that aside, I would recommend it as a great castle experience. My wife and I have just returned home after a 2 night stay at Appleby Castle. It is exceptionally easy to get to the Castle just a mile or so off the A66 and easy to find, driving into the grounds through the castle gates a special feeling. There are car parks with plenty of space but non right in front of the entrance, but you can drive up drop off your gear then park in the car park which works well. The Castle itself is impressive and very interesting. On arrival we were checked in by very helpful staff and given a mini tour on the way to our room. The Castle isn't pristine, it has a lived in feel which makes the history even more impressive as it feels like people have been living there for hundreds of years. Out room, Thanet, was large and roomy, it had a sink, large cupboard, nice period furniture, 2 chairs, a huge comfortable bed and tapestries. There was also a wi-fi booster in the room which gave excellent coverage. Many of the rooms have no En-suite, this is down to the design of the building, but we had a private bathroom on the opposite side of the corridor, this wasn't a big issue, the bathroom was large and well appointed, bath robes are also supplied. The staff were friendly, warm and knowledgeable, eager to help and willing to have a chat. Food again was what you would expect, we ate in both nights enjoying a wonderful twice baked cheese souffle (so good I had it both nights) steak, lamb and sticky toffee pudding. While the selection isn't huge the food is delicious and I have to say that the steak I had was cooked to perfection, melted in the mouth and was very very tasty, this is probably the best steak I have ever eaten in a hotel/ restaurant. We met in the great hall pre dinner for drinks, in front of a real fire with a piano player in the corner setting the mood. All in all this was a great stay and we could not fault it. More...

We stayed on a farm nearby to Appleby in Westmoreland and decided to stay and eat at the castle, which dates back to Viking times, on our last evening in the area. ||||It was June and we were the only guests. Consequently we had excellent service from the chef and Maitre d.||||We started in the very grand dining room but as the only guests were then ushered into a smaller private dining room and the window shutters closed. There were over 30 candles lit for us as I recall. It was a totally unique experience to have a whole ancient and authentic English castle and its staff to yourself. Not only that but perfect food, wine and very witty service.||||We stayed in one of the rooms overnight. Apparently there are numerous ghosts due to the hundreds of years of murderous conflict in the region (it was part of Scotland at one point). Our bathroom was over the adjoining corridor. We were somewhat scared to go to the loo in the middle of the night as it meant crossing the corridor lined with suits of armour. I slept well but my partner was scared.||||We met the owner the following morning who gave us an interesting run down on the history of the castle.||||If you are looking for a genuine yet plush English Castle experience, this has to be one of the best. I can certainly recommend it without reservation.||||You can look down on the town across the now empty moat (but the view is partly obscured by trees now). There are also views of the nearby Pennine mountains.||||Appleby town is 5 minutes walk away. Small and old fashioned but very pleasant all the same. More...

The en suite itself was very bright and modern with a very big 'open' shower cubicle.||||The butler couldn't be more helpful - after showing us briefly around, he was always on hand should we require anything.||||We attended dinner that night and despite having reservations about all sitting at a long dining table, it was a truly great night. Excellent food, good wine and company, all before retreating to the bedroom.||||Breakfast was a buffet style with hot food (admittedly not the hottest by the time we arrived - make sure you are on time)||||The stay was then rounded off with a tour of the castle, which gave a great insight to the history of the castle and its importance.||||Would definitely recommend!! We've stayed in many castles and castle hotels over the years. Some are basically a castle facade, with blocks of modern rooms inside. Appleby Castle is definitely a "castle" first, and rooms second. From the outside it looks for all the world like a fairytale castle and the reception and common areas are all stonework and wood panels, with paintings and suits of armour, and there are plenty of places you can go and sit down with a drink, and explore.||||Our room was variously called the penthouse and the honeymoon suite and was very big, with not only a bed, but a sofa and two throne like chairs and a desk area, plus a huge bathroom. the first thing you noticed were the very uneven floors, which was fun, but everything else in there was brand new and top quality. Two sinks, a roll top bath and a huge shower, with VERY hot water in the bathroom, and a simply perfect bed - we slept like logs.||||Sleeping was also helped by two bottles of wine at dinner the night before, the cheapest was just ok, but the Rioja was very smooth. I would have liked more choice, as a castle is a special treat so why not offer a few more special wines. The food was excellent and they put on special vegan options for my wife, which she loved. Pumpkin wellington for her main, while I had the sea bass and a souffle starter. All rich and full of flavour, and I even had panna cotta for dessert. All top quality. We were seated with two other couples on a long table for dinner, which was fun, and we saw everyone again at breakfast, which again was cooked perfectly.||||In the morning, we took the "castle tour" which was included, run by a local guide who talked us through the history of the castle and showed us several places we hadn't seen, including letting us try on armour from the private collection. Sort of a cross between James Corden and Brian Blessed if you get the idea. Very entertaining, and it rounded off our stay perfectly. The rest of the staff were excellent, especially the guy who checked us in (James?), who seemed to be running the place all by himself ! ||||You could find somewhere which was newer, with more facilities (there is no longer a jacuzzi here, but we did play pool in ye olde games room) but everything in our room was perfect, the food was amazing, and you'll not find many castles with more character than this one. A wonderful stay.||||||Tour More...

We stayed on 29/07/2018 and upon entering the grounds it was breathtaking to see how big the castle was..we were met by a lovely girl who checked us in and showed us the room. ..seeing is believing the walls are crooked and the floor slanted just like a 1000 year old castle should be..very authentic .There are some spooky parts to the castle including a mirrored corridor..Butler service is a plus.We didn't stay for the 3course meal so can't comment on it..The reason I have given it 4 stars and not 5 is there was issues that just need perfecting.The toiletries in the bathroom were empty (lucky we brought our own).The breakfast wasnt great too.coffee was weak and bacon/sausage was overcooked or left on a hot plate too long..real shame as breakfast is always a highlight to a stay and having paid £12.95 extra just wasn't worth it.A different matter if it had been included in the price.|| The drinks menu is misleading a bottle of becks on the menu was £2 but when I checked out was £3 a little petty but annoying.no local bottles of ale as well.|| Appleby Castle is a great place to stay in my opinion it just needs a little tweaking in places..(no TV in rooms didn't bother me though) which could make it an excellent place to stay..|| One last highlight is the tour of the castle in the morning and it's complimentary as well.kenneth is a bundle of knowledge and very funny..it's nice to see somebody so passionate about local history.My review is a true reflection of my stay but I wish to add that I will be staying again and urge people to give it a go as there isn't many 1000year old castle that you can stay in that is authentic.Appleby itself is a true little town with old shops and a lovely bakery.well worth a visit. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel we were the most important people there, as were all other guests, Prior to being shown to our room we were given a brief but useful tour of the castle and it’s facilites by a well informed young man. The room was bright and clean with an ensuing shower room. Extremely comfortable bed which made for a great nights sleep. Dinner was exceptional and the staff and chef were very helpful and flexible. While waiting for dinner we had a drink in the great hall, a gentleman appeared and played the piano which was a lovely touch. The only issue during this fabulous stay was the corridor light which can on every time someone walked down and it streamed through the glass above the bedroom door which disturbed my partners sleep a little. A curtain or blind could improve this. Breakfast was buffet style starters, followed by freshly cooked items of your choice, fresh pastries were available could not fault it at all. The grounds were pleasant and we enjoyed an evening walk Around them. A fabulous stay, would happily return. More...

What impressed my husband and me the most with Appleby Castle was how true it remains to it's time period without corporate glitz and glamour. We had the most wonderful stay and found the owner Mrs. Nightingale, the manager Peter, the chef (sorry, forgot his name but not his character!), and the rest of the staff to be extremely charming and down to earth. We were treated like treasured friends with the relaxing feel and comfort of a bed and breakfast (but in an elegant centuries-old castle!). While awaiting dinner Peter entertained us on the piano, and when I teasingly asked for some ragtime, he easily obliged. We chose to make reservations for dinner and had one of the most exquisite meals we've ever had. Breakfast in the morning was also delicious. We ended our stay with a complimentary tour of the castle given by Kenneth, getting a more detailed history of this fascinating place. His enthusiasm was contagious. Appleby Castle is a gem on beautifully kept grounds, located in a sweet little village full of friendly people, picture-perfect buildings, quality businesses and breathtaking scenery. More...

So glad we ignored all the negative reviews and decided on checking this place out for ourselves! We have stayed in castle hotels before and understand the reality that its a castle first and a hotel second. Staff could not do more for us and we loved the castle’s quirky charm. Yes it’s not a five star hotel and if that’s what your after, this place isn’t for you. The castle’s grounds and interiors are immaculately maintained and our cottage accomodation was clean and had everything our family needed to be comfortable.|We decided not to have breakfast as we were self catering but dinner produced by the engaging and passionate head chef Chris was of a high standard! He took the time from his busy schedule to meet with my fussy kids and asked what they wanted and delivered a meal impromptu that they thoroughly enjoyed. |The village is a few minutes walk near the castle and is quaint and charming. Plenty of food options and lots of shops to explore. We only had a night here but could have easily stayed for a few more days as there is so many near by attractions and lots of keep our brood occupied .We will be back next time we are in England!| More...

My daughter’s wedding at the castle yesterday. Wow, what a wonderful venue. Many guests arrived Friday for evening meal and accommodation, it was ideal with a hot buffet and such friendly staff in a relaxed atmosphere. Saturday started with a lovely choice of breakfast and an excellent and relaxing day as the remainder of guests arrived. The ceremony was brilliant and the staff did us proud with an amazing ‘Wedding Breakfast’ at 5 o’clock PM followed by an amazing party with a wonderful supper of sandwiches at 10 o’clock for the party goers. Left today after a most memorable event in wonderful surroundings. Sally, the owner and Peter the manager where available throughout to deal with all queries and I cannot fault the whole occasion. Value for money at it’s utmost. I would highly recommend this location for an event of a lifetime or simply a relaxing break amongst beautiful countryside. More...

This was an amazing experience - the first night was in a room in the servants quarters and this was not so good as there was no view so we moved to a better room with a lively view of the river Eden and the penines. Breakfast was very good and the only criticism I have is that the staff did not offer any information about the surrounding area and recommend places to visit which would have been gladly received as we had not stayed in this area before so had no local knowledge. I would recommend this experience but I would be careful as to which room you stay in as this makes a massive difference to the quality of your stay More...

There was nothing I would have changed about our stay.

This is a long review, so the key points are:
* Fantastic service
* Beautiful setting
* Great location

We stayed for two nights in Appleby Castle, and had a wonderful time. It's still a functioning castle, and it looks every inch the type of place you read about or see in historical fiction. In a lot of cases the decorations were hundreds of years old and all the more charming for being so. It was like walking into a dream, set 200 hundred years ago. Our own room was behind a secret door, which just added to my own excitement.

The staff were incredibly helpful and friendly. We were allowed to use the Great Hall or the morning room throughout the day if we wished, and both rooms had big open fires. We spent a lot of time in the morning room, and they made sure that we were comfortable with the fire (which was lovely given the weather outside), and that we had any drinks we might have wanted.

We had dinner in the large dining room on the second night, and as usual the service was fantastic. The food was amazing, and we were made to feel like we were the only people there, even in a room full of people.

We were also treated to a tour of the castle. Much of it focused on the various inhabitants of the castle, with an energetic and engaging delivery by the tour guide. The tour guide also happened to have an assortment of medieval and later helmets that he kindly allowed us to try on. It was a lot of fun, but also very informative.

The castle itself is also within 5 minutes to the village of Appleby. It's a charming little village, with a lot of independent stores and very friendly inhabitants. It also has its own grounds that guests were invited to walk around, with a full motte and a river nearby. It was an exquisite setting.

I can't recommend this place highly enough. We will definitely be going back.
