I love this gym. I take the boxing, Muay Thai, and BJJ classes. The instructors (Akkim, Angel, Michael, Brian) are really nice. I started off with minimal experience and they were very attentive and helped me with the foundation and techniques. Now I'm going pretty much everyday because it's so fun! Crossfit is an awesome workout. The instructors (Zeke and Issac) will give you modifications if needed. And make sure you practice good technique so you don't get injured! More...

I have tried a few gyms around the city, although they all seem similar in facilities, it's the Trainers that make a difference. At Fitness CA, I am lucky to have Juan as my trainer. A4I wanted to write this overdue review to maybe inspire someone to come and train with us; also to thank A4 for welcoming me with my limitations and fears. It has been almost a year since I joined A4 and changed it my life, I feel healthier and stronger than ever before. Between CrossFit and a new healthy lifestyle/diet I have lost 55 pounds and counting to achieve my big goal! Meanwhile the most important part of my journey, is the community there. I was huge before with physical limitations and they helped me anyway, the instructors were amazing and my new friends were so supportive that in 50 years this is the first time I enjoy waking up in the morning looking forward to sweat. Shocking!!! Thank you so much Amanda and Adam I will be eternally grateful. More...

I'm loving my new crossfit routine! I prefer the morning classes as they're smaller and seem to have a more diverse participant makeup. If you're a veteran crossfitter or body builder, the evening classes may be more your speed. New and challenging workouts every time. The trainers are fabulous. They provide support when needed and plenty of motivation to get through the WOD . Highly recommend! More...

TLDR: cost-effective gym that offers CrossFit, Muay Thai, boxing, jiu-jitsu, AND rehab. So not only will you learn some cool shit here, but if you so happen to get injured while doing it - as is the possibility with any physical sport - you can rehab all in one place. Personable staff that remember your name, egos are checked at the door, and the staff is well educated in biomechanics. I've been to gyms where trainers are letting their clients do back workouts with arched backs; one of many mistakes that will NOT happen here. They know their shit.*****I've been coming here for a little under a year and I love this place! Not only is it one of the more cost-effective gyms in the area (we all know LA livin' is expensive) that will teach you MMA (Thai boxing, traditional boxing, and jiu-jitsu) and/or CrossFit, but something that isn't as pronounced - at least, it wasn't for me - is that they also offer rehab. This is key for me because injury is an innate quality present in every sport and I've personally been hindered and frustrated by my injury, which, after 5 years, is FINALLY improving.Reason why? They have SMART coaches with degrees and certificates in biomechanics on top of years of experience that will take time to listen, diagnose you, and give you advice on how to tend to your injuries. They don't have some cookie-cutter, bullshit rehab routine they print off the internet and hand out to everyone - it's personalized. The only reason my injury is improving is because the owner, Adam, took the time to hear me out and actually cared about what I had to say. I wasn't just another dollar sign to him and it only took 5 minutes to figure it out and, like I previously mentioned, I've been dealing with this for 5 years!!! (Thanks, Adam!) So, not only will you learn how to lift, throw a punch, or a kick, but you will learn how to do so properly and, if you're unlucky like me and are injury prone, can also tend to injuries all in one place.  I don't take the CrossFit classes so I can't personally speak to them, but I show up for Muay Thai, boxing, and sometimes some ground karate thing called jiu-jitsu or something like that ;) and I've already learned so much. Both of my cousins have actually been boxing their entire lives and when I showed them just a few of the things I was learning, they were surprised and happy at HOW I was being taught. I guess it's not common for trainers teaching group classes to teach you proper footwork and movement; they just focus on punches and sweating? IDK. I just know it was basically their way of saying the coaches here know what the fuck they're talking about and know how to teach it properly. I also know that at this place, everyone checks their ego at the door and comes in eager to learn. Everyone is a student. I will be honest and say that it's not your state-of-the-art facility like an Equinox or a flagship Gold's Gym, but it's an old-school feeling gym that has everything you need to do WORK! Let's be honest - you don't even use half of those fancy machines at those gyms anyway. So, if you're looking to learn a new sport, get in better shape, feel CONFIDENT, and/or just meet some awesome people that actually care, get off your phone and check this place out. And if you are like me and don't feel like you want to commit to several months of payments before even trying it out, I know they offer access at a discounted rate. Check the Groupon and come on by.I'll see you there. More...

A4 Fitness is that place you will call "home" when thinking about workout. I started with a groupon I think that 4 years ago maybe? And after the introduction classes and the first 2 or 3 classes, already signed in. I saw it had something different than other places, and I wasn't wrong.I stayed as a loyal costumer for 2 years until I had to move to NY for work for a bit more than a year. I tried another crossfit there and it wasn't comparable to A4. That's why one of the first things I did when I returned to LA was to sign up again here.Coaches have changed, but the ego free ambiance and friendly stuff and members remain the same. It almost feels like they have an "admission policy", as you make great friends in here while getting your workout. That is about the place and business, to give you a perspective. Now let's talk about the workout. I only did crossfit, I see the boxing classes are popular but my interest here has always been the crossfit classes. The "Adam Lerner Method" is basically the same as having a personal coach for 4 or 5 times less the price of getting one. Simple as that. Never had best results as following his method. If you want results, and understand takes time and nutrition to see those (not much time to be honest), this is the best plan for you. PERIOD.You'll have times of the year when you will notice you are more "crossfit" focused with the WODs, another times are more "cross training" workouts to help you balance every single area of your body. You won't be handling your money here to get to class and see you have to do today 50 overhead squats and say goodbye. No. Here, Adam thinks strategically a weekly method to mix workouts that will be challenging (and that you can scale as needed) but doable, fun and encouraging. Seriously, you should give it a try and you will see the difference. And no, I don't work here, I just feel these guys deserve the recognition for all the hard work they put into it. Again, I've been to other places and didn't see the point of paying the premium fees for a workout that i can find online. To make this review legit in case you are skeptical for all the good words, I will say that also coaches "quality" varies to be honest, and as everything in life, some are better than others. Also, don't expect fancy shower rooms Equinox style, but they have parking in the back which is convenient. No matter what, you always have the attention you need to not go and hurt yourself, so you can leave all your fears about this type of workout at home and just come to enjoy a great workout.Summary: Friendly people and coaches, GREAT workout routines and results to be in the best shape of my life. 100% recommend. Long overdue for a review. I honestly LOVE going here. I've been going here for about 8 months now and will continue to go here as long as possible. The gym isn't set up in a fancy way to impress your eyes, it's set up to get results and to grind. I've done both boxing and crossfit here and have absolutely zero complaints. The owners are always working, the staff is extremely friendly and helpful. If you have any type of question related to nutrition, weight training, boxing, etc. they have the answers for you. The classes here aren't too big so you can always ask the instructor questions and they will gladly help you. One of many reasons I love this place is because I love all the instructors/coaches there. Whether you are a new to working out, weight training, etc. or not this is the perfect place for anyone at any skill level. There is absolutely no intimidation!!! Highly recommend it. More...

I have been a member of A4 Fitness for one year and I must say it is one of the best physical training establishments, I've experienced.  Very versatile!..from Crossfit to boxing to Muay Thai!  Great instructors and first-rate workouts.  It is an awesome place to train!!What a great environment they have... The staff makes you feel right at home and you feel like you're a part of the family.  Don't be intimidated if this is your first time doing Crossfit or Combat arts... The trainers will bring you along at your pace.  I have been fortunate to have some skillful trainers from Coach Tanner, Coach Adam and Coach Amanda to name a few.  They will teach, push and encourage you to become a better version of yourself.  With that said I am going to be 54 in a few months of writing this review and I must admit that I have become seriously strong and feel very young in body.  Not only can I push or pull a lot of iron in the gym I have also hiked five of the highest peaks in Southern California and also participated in a 12 mile Tough Mudder obstacle race since being a member of this establishment.  This gym has given me the tools I need to face these challenges and dominate them.  Not only in body but in mind.  You become comfortable with the uncomfortable.  So what are you waiting for  Try it out!!!  Have fun!!!  And become part of our family!!! :) More...

A4 Fitness doesn't only strengthen your body but also your mind. It's much more than a gym. It's a place to release tension and gain positive energy. Personally it has become like therapy, and Adam (& "my wives"), family. We laugh almost as hard as we train, we talk about our worries, we celebrate our accomplishments and we are always looking after one another. Even when my schedule becomes insane, Adam makes it possible. And I couldn't be more thankful because the time spent there is priceless. It doesn't only allow me to get rid of stress and to balance my emotions, but it shows how he genuinely cares about us. He listens, he understands and from day 1 he makes us feel like home. And that's a feeling that nowadays, and in this city, can be hard to find...I'm the type of person who doesn't last long in gyms, normal-common gyms where no one cares, there is no motivation and it can even be a little intimidating. So after a whole year of trying to do that I realized I wasn't ever going to get hooked, and furthermore, enjoy it. I need to be surrounded by people who are encouraging, who are your team (even if they are technically your "opponent") and who are willing to see you grow. So I decided I needed to focus on a sport rather than just "the gym". I had previously done all types of dancing, gymnastics and acrobatics, so I decided to go for something completely out of my comfort zone: boxing. (Full disclosure: It wasn't only outside my comfort zone in terms of movement, but I also had a very reluctant opinion about it... How can anyone feel satisfaction out of punching people?) I was so wrong!!! SOO wrong... Punching people is great!! hahaha JK, boxing goes much beyond punching. At times the technical aspects even remind me of dancing. It activates every single muscle in your body and it makes you connect them together to achieve the max power. It's such a fulfilling sensation when you notice how your mind reacts instinctually and unconsciously your whole body is working collaboratively.   Anyway, I could talk for hours...My fellow lovely chipmunks, taking care of yourselves should be a priority. Being healthy and happy are the most important goals in our lives. If you think that activating your body and allowing your mind to rest is a challenge, JOIN THE A4 FITNESS TEAM. You are very welcome :) More...

I hate gyms.  I hate working out.I hate waking up to go to the gym.But for some reason I actually like coming here.I went to a lot of free trial classes at other crossfit gyms in the area, and none of them compare to A4.  NONE.  Not even the ones with 150+ reviews with 4.5 stars.  Whats the difference?  Well, outside of the kickass groupon deal for your first month, they have a mandatory fundamentals class no other gyms offers.  Being a complete newbie to crossfit (and gyms in general), the other gyms just shove you right in with their normal classes, with no real instruction or corrections of bad form.  You're tossed into the fire and hope you live. This place doesn't do that.  They actually care!  They walk you through it, and give you more attention if you need help getting your form.  Everyone is super friendly as well.  Equipment is comparable to every other gym if not better.  The people that come to this place are much friendlier as well. They also offer other courses such as boxing and MMA, which is good for when you finally get your body where you want it to be, you can further enhance your lifestyle with some boxing. If you are new to crossfit, or wanting to start crossfit, come here.  Actually, wait.  You're going to be sore the first couple visits.... perhaps too sore to be working out at a normal pace.  Join a fundamentals class.  Then go to 2 other crossfit gyms and do their free trials to get the soreness out of your body, so when you start your month at A4, you can milk it for all its value and not be hindered by soreness.Thats what i did haha... this place is also a lot cheaper than the other gyms in the area per month, after your initial 1st month.=======LIKES:  They actually teach you and walk you through the movements.  You are given attention when you need it most!  Not crowded like the other gyms.DISLIKES:  Parking... but its actually not a problem at all because the street has tons of parking.  Also there are either early morning classes, or there are evening classes.  There's no noon class... but you cant blame them right?  not many people workout during that time anyway to justify a class time where no one shows up.VERDICT:  You come here!  YOU COME HERE NOW!  especially if you are new or wanting to get into crossfit to improve your health and lifestyle. TL;DR: GO TO THIS AWESOME GYM NOW AND YOU WON'T REGRET IT.Alright, where do I even begin?! I moved to West LA from SFV about a year ago. I was training in SFV with a personal trainer for the previous 3 years and tried to make it work for the first few months of living here, but, as I'm sure fellow Westside residents know, that was not sustainable. Freakin traffic, amirite? So, I had to move on. I was a bit heartbroken because I didn't think I'd be able to find another trainer that could fit my needs (lotsa musculoskeletal issues, I'm a pain in the ass), to say nothing about whether I'd even be able to afford it here. I tried working out on my own, and you know how that goes. I didn't. I need a coach! That's where Adam (A4 owner) came in. I connected with him online and we talked about goals/etc. I told him that I really didn't want to do CrossFit (sorry, it's not not for us joint/inflammationally [just made up a word] challenged folks). He actually agreed with me - CrossFit wouldn't be the best route for me. So, green flag #1, he doesn't push an agenda on you in a "one-size-fits-all" manner. I booked a session with him.First, before training, he did this amazing thing: HE LISTENED. He didn't just nod and smile then do what he was going to do anyway. He had me do simple exercises and watched my form and current abilities. He listened to my goals/physical limitations/what-have-you and tailored the workouts for that. I began working out 3 days a week with a combination of private sessions (lifting/circuits), partner training, and boxing. Before I met Adam, I thought I lifted. My previous PR for deadlifts was 185lbs. But my knees were caving in, my arches were collapsed, and my back wasn't straight. After 3 months of training with Adam, I hit 225lbs WITH proper form. And we weren't even trying to break my PR that day. Crazy! Green flag #2, you make leaps and bounds without even realizing it - he'll make you stronger every day.Anywho, everything else about the gym is awesome. Adam's wife, Amanda, is always upbeat and motivating to everyone. The other coaches and trainers are friendly and professional as well. The other gym patrons are good people and the environment is positive and motivating overall. We all laugh constantly and it feels like a family. I was worried about making friends on the Westside (I thought everyone would be snobs & hipsters), but I can honestly say I've made friends at A4. This atmosphere makes staying in shape fun and addictive. Green flag #3, welcoming/family-like environment. Go to this gym. For personal training, boxing, MMA, jiu-jitsu, kids classes, group classes, even CrossFit (if that's your thing ;) ) --- JUST GO. The sooner you start, the sooner you'll be kicking ass. More...

This gym is absolutely a great place to try out. I'm a petite girl and I'm kinda weak at anything athletic, but when I took my first class, I feel this is the right place for me, my coach Adam is soooo nice and patient, he will never push you too hard, instead he always encourage a lot, which makes me gaining lots of confidence. Also my weight goes down 3kg at my first week, of course I trained 5 times a week also stayed on track of my healthy diet. This gym is totally different than other regular gyms, at here you can make friends with everyone. Also Adam plans a different schedule for me, he mixed my personal training with some partner training also some boxing. Even though I go there 5 times a week, I never feel bored about my work out. I hate myself.  I'm a liar and can't be trusted to be truthful; not even to myself.  Take, for the example, the other morning, as I opened my eyes and stared at the ceiling, THIS happened:Me: "Hey, it is 9 a. m. in the morning already. Are you not heading to the CrossFit class that begins at 9:30?" (Yes, I'm grammatically correct and verbose in my head.)Me too: "Come on, dude, it's Sunday.  Even that one deity worshiped by a variety of religions took today [air quote] off [/air quote]." (Ditto use of air quotes in my head.)Me: "Well, I guess that IS a good point.  Maybe breakfast would be a better idea.  Do you not like that place right near the gym; NORMS, is it?  Steak & eggs with a side of pancakes, right?  Mmmm!"Me too: "Oh yes, quite right.  Good show." (I should also mention I sometimes sound British in my head?)[Hop in car, driving west on Olympic Blvd. towards NORMS but somehow "missing" the turn to go south on Overland Blvd. to Pico Blvd.]Me too: "Hey, shouldn't we have turned on Overland?"Me: "Oh, yes, umm, well, I figured we would take Sepulveda and swing around instead of using Overland and stopping at all those stop signs."Me too: "..." (That "...", by the way, is in Spanish, which I've just started learning.)[As the car makes the left on Sepulveda, it pulls into the parking lot for A4 Fitness.]Me too: "The hell?!?"Me: "Let us just go in and see what the WOD* is.  We'll just take off after you see what's up."Well, you can guess what happened next, and I end up sore for the next couple of days--handsomely sore, yes, but sore nonetheless.I've been at A4 for about a month now, and have taken both boxing and CrossFit classes.  All the instructors with whom I've taken classes are patient and readily answers questions.  Kyle and Josh (for CrossFit) and Peter (Boxing) all also point out where I need to tweak a movement.  Needless to say, they are constantly talking to me.This facility on Sepulveda is new and they are still putting in the heavy bags and finalizing the set-up.  I believe they will close the facility on National and move everything here by the 21st of March. The parking lot is super small, but I believe people can park on the other side of the street after 6pm.I do have to say that I have never come out of any workout sorry that I've gone, and it always feels better to have attended a class than not.  To paraphrase a common saying: "I've never looked back on a workout and said 'I wished I didn't do it'".Damn you, me.  Or damn me, you.*WOD, for those of you who haven't been clued in to the CrossFit culture yet, stands for Work Out of the Day. This review is fairly overdue. I bought a Groupon in November and enjoyed a full month of unlimited Crossfit. It was my first time to ever participate in Crossfit, and the 3 sessions of their fundamentals of introductory training was crucial. I really liked that it was mandatory and they were looking out for my best interest and health. My first class was on a Saturday morning and it was pretty standard as far as intros go. My second class was on an evening with Jamie. He broke down what Crossfit was, how it originated, and why I needed to do each exercise correctly. It was essential information and I highly recommend that Jamie is the guy to go to! Crossfit felt like a great fit for me. With a background in sports I am an athletic person by nature so the community at A4 Fitness really met me where I can't get that same feeling from the gym-rat lifestyle. With that said, I am a full time student, working full time to make ends meet, and it's tough in LA, right? Unfortunately, the owners at A4 Fitness were not willing to help me find a membership that fit my budget. I was offered $130/month to go twice a week. I had heard Crossfit was expensive but it was disappointing I couldn't get more for that much money per month. More...

Before I came to A4 I used to work out at the local conventional gym multiple times a week. It wasn't until I got tired of not getting the results I wanted that made me sign up. Within a month I already started to see a transformation in all areas of my fitness. The training staff and owner are extremely helpful and hands on with anything you ask of them. More...

The boxing/muay thai/mma coaches are very knowledgeable and easily approachable. If you are willing to learn and motivated to get a work out, this is the place for you. Energy from the crossfit class going on concurrently also pumps you up. Theres a wholefoods and a juice bar across the street to get ur nutritional fix as well. Ive met some cool and encouraging peeps while perfecting my martial arts. Doing so has made me lose weight, gain confidence, and most importantly not feel as guilty when i pig out. More...

I have been going to A4 Fitness for a little over a year now and I am glad I have stuck with this gym! I was first impressed with the gym by the fantastic coaches who get to know you and your workout needs personally. They are always willing to work with you and they are never short of excellent advice. Adam Learner does an outstang job of running the gym and ensuring members get the most out of both the facilities and the coaches.
I train one-on-one with Peter Haro for boxing. Pete is simply an amazing trainer. He has been the crux of my development as a boxer from nothing to where I am now as an amateur boxer. When I am not training personally with Pete, I go to the boxing classes offered at A4, which are run by both Pete and Akkim Lee. Aside from their impressively vast experience and extensive knowledge of boxing, what really sets these two apart from other coaches is their ability to incorperate technique training into the classes while maintaining a high fitness tempo. The classes are taught such that you are trained how to correctly punch, move, breathe, etc. while simultaneously putting that training into practice. So, whether you are just learning to box, or if you are an experienced boxer, the A4 boxing classes are definitely ones do!

This review is loooooong overdue! I remember my first time trying out CrossFit over 2 years ago and being out of breath from just the warm up. Since then, I have PR'd every lift and even more importantly, I have learned so much more about my ability and have gained much more confidence in myself. If you are new to CrossFit, all of the coaches stress the importance of safety and form. If you have been doing it a while, they will help push you out of your comfort zone and help you improve. I will be forever grateful for A4 (aka the best gym everrrrrr) and for all of the friends I've made here! More...

This place is the best. I've been doing their CrossFit, but the boxing and MMA classes are always pretty well attended. The trainers are great, and well worth the money. I having been working out here for almost 2 years now. And I grow to love crossfit as I CF 4 times a week. I know ppl usually has some negative feeling toward Crossfit (or ppl doing Crossfit) Usually joining a crossfit gym is like joining a cult. Not this one! The coaches and people are really chilled. Everyone are friendly and willing to help you to achieve your personal goal. The owner Adam are a really nice and laid-back Guy. Very knowledgeable with fitness and MMA. I love the late regular class by Josh. Highly recommended him as a coach if you wanna get stronger and get fitter. No matter what your level, he will design a scale plan just for you. So you are like having an 1 on 1 experience. If you are absolute beginner, take Jamie class. He is super high energy and know how to keep you going. Did I also mention wholefood is just next door? If you are looking for a hardcore "bro" gym, A4 is not for you. But if you enjoy a chilled vibe, and just want to exercise, have fun and make new friends. A4 is prefect for you. More...

A4 is great whether you're a beginner or experienced in CrossFit. And now, my review:I got the Groupon for their CrossFit here - one month unlimited use, but you have to take 3 sessions of their fundamentals. Let's get the complaints out of the way. The box gets pretty cramped and crowded, as you have CrossFit going on in one side of the house, boxing or another martial arts class going on in the other side of the house, while you may also have a CrossFit fundamentals class going on in between, and then all the equipment for all disciplines added into the mix.The classes can get overbooked and leave for little room to operate in. You either have to double up with a buddy or do some of the WODs out of order due to too much demand and not enough supply. Place also tends to get hot and stuffy, but hey, that just means people are working hard.Parking's pretty horrible too. There's a very limited lot so you'll have to go fishing on National and McLaughlin. Not too bad, but majority of their classes are during high tide traffic, so although there may be street parking, you'll piss off some folks when you suddenly slow/stop and try to reverse into a spot.ALL THAT BEING SAIDAdam and his staff are very friendly, approachable, and are eager to help you out. There was one step-in instructor that was quite a douche and seemed like he didn't care a hair about you, but everyone else is legit and awesome. As another reviewer had mentioned, the folks here are not drill sergeant-esque and are quite endearing and gentle in their encouragement, while still pushing you to do your best.I just can't get over how expensive the monthly dues are [A4 is not unique to this - all CrossFit boxes have monthly dues I can't afford]. I may forever be stuck as a Groupon CrossFit guy, but that's due to my being cheap. Champagne taste on a beer budget when it comes to fitness, but that's all my fault, haha. More...

Whether you're into crossfit, muay thai, or boxing, they have classes at all hours for all levels. If you're in here for boxing, Pete "Pistol Pete" Haro is your guy. Really challenging WODs and a really supportive staff. I'm usually in Josh's classes, and he's really mellow -- motivating without being a demeaning drill sergeant. I'm new to crossfit, and am taking it easy because of a recovering rotator cuff, and everyone's supportive of me using light weights and taking it easy on any shoulder work. Adam, Mike, Jamie, Bronwen, and Amanda are all rock star instructors. It can get a little crowded during the evening classes, but still able to fit in and get a great workout. After returning to weight training from a few years layoff my right knee developed intense pain within six months.  I had resumed standard bodybuilding movements that I had always used in the past, but this pain was new.  After seeing two doctors and a physical therapist the consensus was I had chondromalacia patella, a roughening of the cartilage right beneath my kneecap.     In short, one of the orthopedic doctors said my training as I knew it was over, and the physical therapist, though very good and knowledgeable, prescribed boring home routines that did not seem to demonstrate any noticeable improvement.  Not my types of recovery.     This is when I decided to call A4 Fitness as I had already looked at their website and excellent Yelp reviews.  After speaking with Adam and explaining my situation he said that he would be able to help.  He made it clear that the rehab I needed required the use of weights and some of my previous exercises, but in a very controlled and guided manner to begin the process.     Now four months later the knee has recovered greatly and it is completely due to Adam and his knowledge of body dynamics and variety of exercises.  In fact, the improvement is significant enough that I am slowly beginning some CrossFit exercises in addition to more recognized bodybuilding and weightlifting movements.     Adam is a true professional in the world of health and fitness.  He demonstrates care for his clients as well as pride when they succeed or move to the next level.     Lastly, there have been a few occasions when two other trainers had to step in for Adam.  Josh has trained me six times, and Amanda once.  They show the exact same commitment, dedication and support in guiding a client to a fantastic workout.     A truly unique gym with unique people.  Highly recommended for whatever one's fitness goals may be for the future. I've been a member for about 6 months and I train with their Cross Fit team. I had never done cross fit before, was fairly non-active as well, but after a short trial period I was totally hooked. The things I really like about A4 Fitness: Workout sessions are always very different - you'll do a little of everything, and this not only keeps it fun and interesting, but it also works your entire body (they also have late classes and really early ones for the working peeps). The instructors are TOP quality. Very experienced, and it's great to have super qualified trainers watching over you, making sure you're doing the exercises correctly. The classes are not crowded, and the people who works out there are all easy going, helpful & good vibes. The results you see in your body and in your mind. I think what hooked me in Cross Fit was the sensation after the class. It's like I have pressed the reset button in my brain -- I feel super relaxed & happy. My energy levels are higher overall, and I am loving feeling stronger, leaner and healthier. The fact that you realize you can do things you never thought you would be able to do before... like 50 push ups, 60 squats with weights, running with a weight ball.... and lots more within 30mins. It's like proving to yourself you can do whatever you decide to. It's empowering!I highly recommend A4 Fitness to anyone looking to get healthier & fitter. Even if you think you can't do it (that was me), you can... believe me. You'll see results really fast, and that's gonna make you coming back for more ;) More...

First off, I rarely give FIVE stars for any business but this place has impacted me so much as a new mom (started when my little one was barely 3 months) trying to get back into shape. I took advantage of their Groupon deal for a month (attending 4-5x per week) and have noticed a huge improvement in my overall (especially core) strength. I had actually started with them while taking a break from running due to an injury. Now that I'm back at running, crossfit has actually helped me to regain my speed/endurance. I have tried out two other boxes in the past but I had been turned off by either the ineptness of the coaches (which actually led to some injuries, sending me to the chiropractor) or the overly competitive and coldness of what is supposed to be a community. At A4, I have noticed and experienced both of these two important components: very knowledgeable and friendly coaches and the people that I crossfit with week to week feel like family already. I went to A4 primarily for the AMMS curriculum,  to learn Muay Thai specifically.  When I first went to inspect the facility, Adam Lerner had recently purchased it, and was in the transition phase of putting all of the elements he envisioned together.  I was reluctant at first, but Adam had such a great attitude full of knowledge, kindness and flexibility, that I enrolled.  I was training 4 - 6 days a week so I went for the unlimited package and I am really glad that I did.  I took full advantage to explore more classes, like boxing (which I had a little bit of experience with), Kickfit (kicks-ass) and now No-gi Jujitsu (which I had no intention of ever taking)  and all of the trainers are really great, but most importantly they have an approachable and positive attitude, and are family friendly. Lately I have been working in Crossfit which is challenging for all levels, and can't wait for Yoga.  This place is what I have come to call "the Hub of Excellence"The only down side I can pick at, is the loss of the spiritual icons, with respect to the Martial arts space, as it gave the place a certain grounded and serene energy/character that I feel now is lacking.  However new layers are still being added, so we will see how the decor and overall energy tied to it evolves; as it does affect you on some level. CrossFit at A4 Fitness has turned out to be a lifesaver for me. It's almost like getting personal training, in tiny groups, with charted results, great HipHop, and super nice people who you look forward to seeing again. I haven't had a team feeling like this since school... and the coaches are so cool and easy-going, simply just people you want to be around. They push you just enough, and really provide a clean, dependable environment that gets results. Ultimately, how much progress you make is up to you - but your peers at A4 are there to cheer you on when you decide to push yourself and break through to a new level. The exercises are always changing so you don't get bored, but they are consistent enough that you can get a sense of how you're getting stronger. These classes have become such a part of my life and my overall sense of wellbeing and strength. I live across the street and don't think I'll ever be able to move now. I got offered a job downtown and thought, well.. who wants the commute, I'd have to move somewhere downtown to make it work - and then I thought about having to leave A4 and dinner at WholeFoods afterwards, and I'm not sure what would make that worth it. I don't ever want to go back to working out at a regular gym. I find myself going for runs on my days off just to get more in shape because A4 has really conditioned me into the type of person who actually enjoys working out. I just feel so much healthier and stronger, and so the workouts hurt less, feel better, and are actually something I look forward to as opposed to dreading. So weird (i always though working out would suck to some degree and it doesn't anymore), so true, and so good (so good!). More...

The CROSS-FIT Fitness program is SUPERB! You're NOT going to get A BETTER workout anywhere else. PERIOD. End of story. Fitness has always been a part of my life. I have been a certified group fitness instructor and can judge many types of workouts (minus the martial arts). And A4 will challenge muscles you didn't even know you had! And you will exercise, tone & strengthen ALL the right muscles. JOSH & ADAM are both EXCELLENT & Professional Trainers! And I can hardly wait to make it one of AMANDA'S sessions! You really don't know what you are missing until you've tried it. Plus, it's SUPER FUN! A little more pricey than your run-of-the-mill typical gym --- but this isn't a typical gym. I have been doing crossfit with Adam (and assistant coach Josh) for about 3 months now and I love it. I have to admit, I was a bit intimidated at first because I had heard so much about the intensity of crossfit and I was in no way fit or even athletic. I actually had only been doing light cardio at the time I signed up, but decided to face my fears and took advantage of the two week $20 deal. Adam was so patient with me and tailored my workouts to my level - well he still is/does. I remember my first few weeks not being able to even lift the 35lb bar, and just yesterday I did a total of 80 reps of 55lb push-presses. Wow, I never would have believed I could do that even two months ago. You don't notice it, but the more you go and as time passes, your strength level increases. My goal is to get toned and I'm already starting to see it in my arms and legs; my abs are another thing but Adam is developing a nutrition series to help us out with that. I searched for a kickboxing gym for several months before joining AMMS.  I take Muay Thai classes with Coach Jeremy once a week as well as the morning kick-fit classes with Coach Robert three times a week and love both of them.  AMMS is my first experience in the martial arts world and I am hooked.I have loved my experience at AMMS and definitely recommend it to any and everyone.  It does not have the intimidating cool guy feel that a lot of gyms try to give off to outsiders or prospective members nor is it flooded with dozens of tough guy want-to-be's.AMMS also has great class sizes.  I've never been in a class that seemed so full that each individual member did not get enough guidance/coaching. I've met members that are there to learn a specific discipline as well as members who just want to get in/stay in shape and it is great for both.Everyone, staff and members, have been more than helpful and supportive in my training and I look forward to remaining a member for years to come.I can't wait until next year when my son is old enough to begin the childrens classes!  My daughter was just born and I'm already planning her membership, too!My wife, children & I have been members of the Santa Monica YMCA for two years now as I work out there 4-5 days per week and take my son to swimming lessons as well as play time twice per week.  After being a member at AMMS for only months now I have already met more members who have become friends with my family and I than in our years at the family YMCA!If you're in search of a friendly, welcoming place to train and better yourself physically as well as mentally this is definitely the gym for you. First, the coaching staff:  The coaches are well versed in multiple techniques of martial arts.  Some are current or former fighters and others are life long practitioners.  They are friendly and supportive while still maintaining disciplined instruction.Second, the facilities:  I've only worked out in the West L.A. location so I can't speak for Hawthorne; so, the school has everything an aspiring martial artist or mixed martial artist could want.  There's a training area, warmup area, boxing ring, MMA cage, and a weight room.  There are plenty of punching bags, jump ropes, extra gear, and weights to prevent a student from being in want.  This faciltiy trains both active fighters as well as fighting enthusiasts.Lastly, the classes:  As previously mentioned, the classes are both fun and disciplined.  Different coaches have different teaching methods.  One class may be very technical in which form and technique are emphasized; in another, you'll still get technique, but he emphasis will be more on fitness and cardio.  I believe this change in atmosphere is really conducive to learning, helps prevent monotony, and helps shape both the mind and the body.In closing, this is a very versatile school that, I believe, has something for everybody that is willing to put in the effort.  I'm proud to be a member. This was the gym that started my journey in MMA. I had to stop going here due to the work schedule change. I had done some traditional styles for a long time, until I came here and it opened my eyes on MMA. The coaches here are excellent and the instruction is very detailed. Also, everyone here is like a big family. There isn't any hatred in training and there are always smiles even though they are sparring. A excellent MMA school to train in the Westside. More...

I joined AMMS the beginning of this year (2011) and have loved every second of it ever since. I began with Muay Thai and found the instructors extremely helpful. Coach Jeremy is always available to answer questions and help with any problems I had during training. Classes focus on technique and sparring without the BS, to train anyone how to defend themselves in real situations. Regardless of your fitness level, the coaches will help guide you through each move till you get the technique down. I also started BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) and even though I have no background in grappling, the instructors helped me with the basics to get me up to speed with the rest of the class. Not only are the coaches good people, but the members and students themselves are also helpful. I never felt intimidated by fellow classmates, and actually was surprised to find a group of extremely talented martial artists who also were genuinely nice people. Whether you're a fan of MMA or looking for an effective way to get fit, AMMS offers everything to get you on track. Plus with the free trial class, you can see for yourself and find out if this is right for you. I highly recommend this school and feel that anyone will feel comfortable when getting started. I've been taking Muay Thai classes at AMMS for about 4 months now and I have thoroughly enjoyed it so far. I didn't have any experience with martial arts of any kind when I walked into the school for the first time. No problem. The teachers were very welcoming as were the other students. I feel like I learn a lot in every class and I usually get a great workout as well. I've been to both Coach Jeremy's and Coach Tito's classes and both are awesome. The intensity level of the classes varies a bit depending upon which coach is leading the class and who you partner with for the drills. But the instruction is always good. They also do a really good job of checking in with you periodically once you start training with them to make sure you are happy with how things are going.  I would definitely recommend AMMS if you are interested in giving Muay Thai a try. It's really fun and it's awesome exercise for both the body and the mind. More...

My review is for the muay thai classes only :)AMMS offers more than martial arts training. Their curriculum, which also includes meditation and breathing exercises, will challenge you mentally and physically. Ladies, this is not the cardio kickboxing class where you bounce and jump around to Beyonce or Lady Gaga. You will learn technique and you will learn to fight. You will spar with guys and girls alike, which sounds scary, but it pushes what you believe you can do! As a female, it is empowering to know that I have tools to help ward off a potentially dangerous situation. AMMS is the right place for you if you're not only looking to train, but to further your understanding of the art. Coach Jeremy and the rest of the team are so supportive and so willing to take you to the next level. Even if you're not looking to be the next big MMA fighter, you can still get the same kind of training. AMMS does justice to the art of muay thai by teaching it right! More...

I recently joined AMMS. The school offers BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu), Muay Thai (Thai boxing), MMA and Close Quarter Contact classes. The classes are well organized and well taught. The student instructors have been trained well, and they work students through the nuances of all the techniques they teach. The main instructors are great, and definitely direct students looking to succeed within their system. [One of the cool things is that Khru Paolo Tocha (probably best known for his role in the movie Bloodsport).]Classes involve technique, fitness and sparring. One definitely gets to practice the techniques and learn how well one is progressing in real scenarios. Another cool note, recently the school opened the morning "Kick Fit" classes to any student of Muay Thai or BJJ at no extra cost.Yes, this is a real school. And yes, this does sound like it would be one of the lame cardio-kickboxing classes from 'insert-a-gym'. It's definitely not. I started taking this in the morning to add to my exercise routine. The classes are great. They're brutal (if you really go for it), but they are great. Lots of plyometrics, Lots of cardio sprints. All in all my first four months at the school have been great. I highly recommend checking it out. If you're on the Westside, there's a  West Los Angeles location. If you're in the South Bay, there's a Hawthorne location. More...

There's a lot of MMA schools in LA, but only one AMMS. Whether you want to just learn Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, or fitness for fun/life or you are seriously consider training to fight, the doors are open to all new comers. If you are coming just to train and/or have never practiced martial arts, the staff are knowledgeable, personable, and dedicated to your advancement. If you are interested in the fight route, the fight team has a good deal of success; while still a relatively new team, they have managed to take 2 amateur belts in a short time span. I joined AMMS 2.5 years ago, and it's more than a school to me, it's like a family. More...

AMMS is an amazing gym. I have never been able to get into a routine that lasts more than a month or two at a normal gym. Since January, I've been completely hooked on the AMMS Muay Thai training curriculum . I've never felt in better shape, but have also never challenged myself the way I do both physically and mentally during these classes. The combination of great coaches and true respect all students pay one another creates an amazing atmosphere to excel in an incredible talent/skill/art form. More...

Short and sweet: This is an excellent gym.  If you're looking for a legit place to train on the West Side, I highly recommend it.  The instructors are knowledgeable and actually care about their student's progression.  This isn't the kind of place where you go to pay for your belts, you're going to have to work for it and prove your skills.  If you apply yourself you'll make noticeable advancement, and as they work off of an actual curriculum you can track your progress easily and you'll always be ready for your next belt test.  Stop by for a free trial class, you won't be disappointed. This Dojo gets my total respect and devotion.  AMMS is truly a self empowerment Temple. First of all, its safe and there are no egos.  Everyone works well with each other no matter what level one may be at, you won't get thrown to the wolves here. If I was to use a slogan for AMMS it would be, "don't take kindness for weakness." Hardcore fighters are coming out of this gym winning medals, the teachers here have serious fighting credentials, yet you wont get any unsafe treatment here. I've been involved in sports and martial arts since a kid in addition to being a certified professional personal trainer for the last 10 years.  I have been involved with plenty of realms in this industry. With that being said,  AMMS by far is on the cutting edge of the industry, merging all the effective philosophies together into a True Mixed Martial Science system.  The coaches here are topnotch and unique and they all stay true to the spirit of the Dojo.  You can not beat the unique blend of spiritual, mental, and physical growth lessons that AMMS has to offer. On top of all that, one of the things I really like is the very meticulous and effective ranking system.  I've witnessed many people, including myself, grow by diligently applying themselves through the ranks. So you maybe looking to get a killer physique or looking to obtain a higher level of spiritual growth, defend yourself on the streets, and/or  be a competitive professional fighter.  AMMS can accommodate. I've done martial arts for a good chunk of my life and have belonged to many gyms of various styles and quality. One of the things that struck me about this gym right off the bat is that it takes a lot 'modern' styles, but teaches them in a structured 'traditional' sense.  If that makes sense.  A lot of the old school traditional elements such as spirituality, discipline, and sense of community are lost in the modern MMA gym.  Not at AMMS.  Here you will bow and meditate.  Another neat thing is that the coaches send encouraging emails and generally keep everyone in the loop for upcoming events.Jeremy, Tito, Akkim, and Paulo are a great lineup of coaches for Muay Thai and Jiujitsu (I'm partial to Muay Thai myself).  One of my favorite things about this school is that there is continuity from class to class and coach to coach, so what you learn in one class is reinforced and built upon in the next class.  Great for beginners to improve, and for experienced people to stay sharp. If my work schedule weren't so erratic, I would definitely show up more often, cause I really enjoy this Academy.  The facility is always clean, and the atmosphere is welcoming to people of all sorts of skill levels and goals.I miss getting punched in the face at this place. I've been going to AMMS studying Muay Thai for 6 months now and I love it, best decision I made this year was to start doing this. I wanted to learn a martial art for a long time, and the cardio involved in Thai boxing is unbelievable. I feel great, the workouts are grueling but afterward I feel so good about myself. My aches and pains are gone, replaced by that amazing muscle soreness that you love because you know you just had a good workout and your body is getting stronger. It feel more positive mentally about myself as well. The facility is clean, the coaches are great, extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Coach Akkim has the best day classes, I've learned so much from him he's a great teacher. The coaches fight competitevely too so they practice what they preach. I recommend this place to anyone!! I have been a devoted  Lover of Martial Arts since I was a child training under the guidance and wisdom of my Father. Since then, I have given my heart and soul to various martial arts studies and schools while working hard in the corporate world. What sets AMMS apart is their on-going schedule that covers various martial arts training such as self defense, Muay Thai, MMA, BJJ and Falun Dafa. A unique balance of external and internal practice.Their close quarters combat for their self-defense curriculum covers techniques to confidently turn defensive to offensive tactics from those with only bad intentions towards you. This training includes defensive and offensive with weapons. Practical, going along with the laws of physics and making your hard spots a magnet for your attackers' soft spots.Their Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu jitsu (BJJ) coaches are seasoned professional fighters with the wisdom, patience and students' best interest in mind, on top of their medals to back it. They are true Teachers, not just instructors. They push me to go beyond the pain (and also point me to the bathroom when I'm about to puke!) and show me how to recognize or make openings and opportunities to take assertively as well as be aware of the weaponry I have been equipped with on my own body to appropriately apply. They have helped me become an even more versatile fighter using what I already have.I have learned during my martial arts journey, that the quality of the school goes hand in hand with the quality of the Teachers. The students are the reflections of their teachers. And the students here are built for physical and mental combat but project a sense of humility and respect. Of course the ego rears its ugly head from time to time which comes with environments that build strength, but I have observed egos being checked by self and others here. The essence of this school is courage, discipline, integrity and deep love. Lastly, they have recently added Falun Dafa, which is a powerful meditation and eastern philosophies practice on Sundays lead by dedicated practioners that volunteer their time. This is an amazing, (trippy!) experience for the spiritual warrior, indeed! In a nutshell: you sweat, you hurt, you heal, you grow stronger on many levels at this school, especially if you are a true Warrior at heart following its Sacred Path. More...

I absolutely recommend AMMS to everyone. Whether you are trying it out for the first time, or been at it for a few years.. .whatever the case is, AMMS is great for all. Coach Jeremy does a great job of accommodating you and finding where you fit. In fact, all of the coaches are amazing, very knowledgeable, and attentive! You really can't ask for anything better.FEMALES- AMMS is an exceptionally good gym to check out. I tried out other places before coming here, and I always felt out of place and the instruction just wasn't up to par. At other gyms, most coaches are either 1). Hesitant to deal with females so will be super lax and won't correct anything you do wrong and won't really let you fight or 2) the other extreme- be very harsh if you want to "play with the boys" then you should get beat up. So I'd either come home without breaking a sweat and have learned nothing, or with a black-eye. Not at AMMS though!AMMS is the perfect balance of providing constructive criticism and letting females fight just as much as males, yet sparing not being a full force attack.I started out trying one of the free classes and fell in love, check it out and you will soon understand! AMMS has done a great job.  They are steadily growing.  As a person who started with them when they were borrowing another facility, they have made great strides and their facilities have improved dramatically.  There are a couple of great highlights to mention:1. No gi (funny karate pajamas) required (ie, less cost to start) - you can wear your sweats2. Reasonable pricing: Often 25% to 50% less than standard facilities in Los Angeles3. Instruction: All of the instructors are seasoned fighters with real competitive experience4. MMA training vs. one style: You learn Muy Thai, BJJ, a little Judo, boxing, etc. More...

From the moment you arrive, you can tell there is something quite special about the Academy of Mixed Martial Science.  The brand new studio is spotless, well-lit, and spacious, is adorned with Buddha carvings and features brand new equipment.  Watching the previous class finish up their exercises, one notices that people are enjoying themselves, but also that this studio and its participants take their study seriously.  Unique to other boxing gyms around town, AMMS adheres to the philosophy of the crafts they teach, combining skill with discipline, and respect to the culture of origin.  Some classes even conclude with a brief meditation session, and according to AMMS literature, qi gung is Incorporated into their curriculum as well. AMMS couldn't have provided a more friendly environment for my friend and I to take our first Brazilian Juijitsu class.  The quality of teaching was impressive, with pacing that allowed us beginners to feel adequately directed, but seemed to challenge the people who'd been coming for a while as well (the classes are broken down by level).  I came back shortly after my initial visit to try Muay Thai for the first time, and once again was impressed with how well Coach Jeremy managed students whose experience seemed to range from one day to several months.  The Muay Thai class, in particular, was a great work out with lots of partnered sparring work.  With Coach Jeremy and his assistant coach continually making the rounds, a lot of personal attention was given to each student, despite the class size of about 25. What was perhaps most telling of the quality of the AMMS, however, was the enthusiasm of the students.  Several students sincerely and independently introduced themselves, welcomed me to the school, and expressed how much they enjoyed coming to classes.  I haven't witnessed such camaraderie and collective spirit in a long time.  I highly recommend checking out a class here, especially since AMMS offers free trial classes for new students.  They can do this because, in all likelihood, it seems, you'll be coming back.
