Clay Blacker Coaching and Counselling

‘21 Certificate of Excellence

ICF Certified Coach and trained Counselor available for individuals or organizations. Counseling and Coaching involve having specific goals that you will discuss and create action plans around. This differs from talking to a family member or friend in that the process involves these action plans and the focus is on advancement through a planned process. Although similar in nature, there are some significant differences between Coaching and Counseling. Counseling involves going into the past and is therapeutic or healing in nature. Coaching involves understanding the present and designing a set of actions to change behaviours, and achieve goals. We look at Counseling as a way to heal something that has happened to one, and coaching as a way to achieve specific goals. Neither Coaching nor Counseling consist of giving advice; I believe that everyone has their own answers within, and my job is to ask the questions that help you find your way. Coaching Services include: Leadership , Career Path, Creativity, Relationships, Performance Coaching, Overcoming Fear, and Life Enhancement. Counseling Services include: Adoption Issues (Adopters or adult adoptees), Grief , Relationships, Men’s Issues, Depression and Self Worth.

What do you love most about your job?

I have always been the person who sees the very best in everyone, and I strive to help people reach their fullest potential. I spent many years toiling away in a career that did not allow me to feed this purpose, and it took it's toll on my physical and mental health. When I changed to this career, I felt a great weight lift off of me, and I find now that even my worst day at work is better than my best days in the previous life. I truly believe this comes down to moving to a career that aligns with my greater purpose, and being in a place where I get to fulfill that purpose every day. Whether it's working with a homeless person in the downtown eastside of Vancouver in my part time job, or a high tech executive in my coaching business, I get great joy out of seeing people find attainable goals and then seeing them attain those goals and move on to the next one.

What inspired you to start your own business?

Although I achieved a good amount of success in my previous career, I always felt that something was missing, an aspect that was intangible and hard to identify. After I left a good job I did a lot of self exploration and thought on what drives me, and what I'm looking for my career to provide. After some research and difficult decision making, I decided to go back to school to become a Coach and Counselor. It turned out to be an excellent choice, and I am very good at what I do now. To be able to do it for myself and not for some share holder's bottom line adds an element of freedom and excitement that I didn't even know existed in my 20 years in my previous career.

Why should our clients choose you?

Simply put, it works! It doesn't matter the target, the education level, my knowledge of the technical aspects of the goal, or what possible blocks or prejudices the client has. As a client centered coach and counselor, my job is to look at each client without judgement and empathically meet them where they are at...wherever that may be. This is a skill that I've always had and the training I received in school helped me hone that and learn some techniques to keep my own agenda or views out of the process. If a client and myself decide to work together after an initial meeting, we are both assured that we are a good fit and they will be able to achieve the presenting goals as long as they do the work THEY decide they need to do.
