What do you love most about your job?

I enjoy seeing my clients winning new clients and entering into new markets. It is quite fulfulling to see my clients's businesses grow in terms of being more sustainable and profitable contributing to local economy development by creating jobs.

What inspired you to start your own business?

After over a decade of working within enterprise supplier development programs, mentoring and supporting over 100 small businesses, I realized the impact I could have by taking a more direct, hands-on approach through my own consultancy.

I saw that many SMMEs and informal businesses needed holistic, strategic support that goes beyond writing tactical plans. They required ongoing mentorship, coaching and guidance implementing their strategies in reality. Being a freelance management consultant would allow me to provide this sustained, customized assistance.

Working within larger programs constrained my ability to truly tailor offerings to the specific needs I saw among entrepreneurs. My own consultancy would give me the freedom and nimbleness to innovate, try new interventions and scale in a demand-driven manner.

Some of the small businesses I mentored wanted long-term support beyond the finite programs they were in. My consultancy could provide continuity for these clients, sustaining the momentum we built together.

Yes, I am able to provide all of my services fully online or remotely.

Through ZOOM or Microsoft Teams, Whatsapp messages and calls, and telephonic calls I can conduct all consultations, interviews and meetings with clients face-to-face from anywhere.

All plan development, research and document preparation is done digitally and shared securely with clients for review and feedback via online collaboration tools.

This allows me to easily serve clients across geographies, providing convenience and flexibility while still maintaining a personal touch through online interactions.

Where physical interaction is required i am able to travel however I would attract additional costs.

I am attending an online short course - an introduction to, and overview of, business management. The course entails reviewing the fundamentals of effective business management, with sessions dealing with the various facets involved. It is valuable because it can fill in the gaps which often exist in a business owner's/manager's approach to 'running' their business. Richard has obviously done a lot in this field, and shares his understanding and experience in the course of the sessions. Helpful summary notes, and references are given.
