What do you love most about your job?
Greetings! My name is Shervelle Thomas the Executive Director of Student Success Strategies. My personal philosophy of meaning and value has a foundation that started with my parents. They instilled the meaning of life in their children (1 dozen: 6 girls & 6 boys) and taught us how to REACH FOR THE STARS. My experience spans the small business sector, corporate sector and educational sector. I have sold cars for CarMax educating customers on solutions to meet their family needs and fit their budget. I am honored to serve as a substitute teacher at St. Georges Independent School where I connect with educators and students alike. As a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) project manager at FedEx, I loved working with people to accomplish shared goals! I have also served as both an on-ground and an on-line Adjunct faculty member at Strayer University Memphis campus teaching undergraduate business courses. My education includes an AS in Computer Science from State Tech, a BS in Industrial Engineering Technology from Southern Illinois University and a MBA in Management & Leadership from Dowling College. I strive to live life to the fullest, reach for the stars, and ultimately empower others to do the same through inspiration, leadership, mentoring and pseudo counseling. As an active member of Christ Communion COGIC, I mentored a group of teenage ladies; challenging them to strive for excellence instead of becoming a victim of their environment by practicing abstinence from drugs, premarital sexual relationships and alcohol. I am an entrepreneur at heart and my strong entrepreneurial spirit shows up in everything I do as I take ownership of projects, initiatives, and tasks from start to completion.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I am always looking for opportunities to give back to the community while sharing my infectious, inspirational story of how I continue to REACH FOR THE STARS. This is exactly why I started Student Success Strategies. My passion for Student Success Strategies grew out of my own "then unrealized" learning struggles as a high school graduate with significant scholarship and financial opportunities. I enrolled in a local Ivy League College previously called Southwestern at Memphis (now Rhodes College) but within my first year, I failed miserably. First academic probation then suspension. I graduated high school with Salutatorian Honors as #2 of my class of more than 200 students, I struggled with underlying learning skills. It appears I was smart because everything came so easy to me. I could read very well but struggled with comprehension; note taking was difficult because I lacked organizational skills and could not remember what the teacher had just said long enough to write it down; was a huge procrastinator; and my study skills included flipping through the chapter and reading the chapter summary. I struggled with an all or nothing mindset in which I secretly gave up on things that I was not good at. As you can see, even as Salutatorian, I still lacked student success strategies and had to work a lot harder than my peers when I made it to college. The rules of engagement to be successful in college were very difficult for me as I did not have skills in my toolbox to do so.

READING STRUGGLES

Proficient learning involves clusters of cognitive skills working together. There are many different mental skills involved in successful reading & writing: phonemic awareness, blending, decoding strategies and fluency. Additionally, executive function skills are particularly important for learning.

MATH STRUGGLES
If your child has to work much harder than their peers to keep up OR is already several levels behind, then Student Success Strategies can help. Proficient learning involves clusters of cognitive skills working together.
There are many skills involved in successful math performance like specific knowledge such as math facts, procedures & concepts as well as other more general skills. Other cognitive skills needed include holding & manipulating information in mind (working memory), flexible thinking (logic & reasoning) and focusing on relevant information while ignoring distractions (attention).

TIME MANAGEMENT is the process of organizing and planning how to divide your time between specific activities. Good time management enables you to work smarter - not harder - so that you get more done in less time, even when time is tight and pressures are high.

STUDY SKILLS, academic skills, or study strategies are approaches applied to learning. They are generally critical to success in school, considered essential for acquiring good grades, and useful for learning throughout one's life.
NOTE TAKING involves certain cognitive behavior; writing notes engages your brain in specific and beneficial ways that help you grasp & retain information. Note taking can result in broader learning than simply mastering course content because it helps you to process information & make connections.

SPEED READING & COMPREHENSION
SPEED READING is a method of reading rapidly by assimilating several words or phrases at a glance or by skimming. Speed reading or rapid reading is a selective reading process in which a reader increases their reading rate while attempting to retain as much comprehension of the text as possible.
COMPREHENSION is the understanding and interpretation of what is read. To be able to accurately understand written material, you must be able to (1) decode what is read; (2) make connections and (3) think deeply about the material read.
