Q&As

I have worked in the mental health field for about 20 years, and I love being able to empower clients to make the changes to improve their lives. Honestly, my favorite type of clients are the people who are in or near crisis mode. The brain is a fascinating thing, and I have learned over the years that chronic anxiety keeps the sympathetic nervous system on high alert and activation. A clinicians job is to settle the nervous system to reduce anxiety. How? By activating the parasympathetic nervous system to bring the mind and body back into a homeostatic state. Sounds so simple, doesn't it? It is... but notice that I didn't say EASY. Sometimes the simplest things can be the most difficult.

I believe that clients should choose me to provide services because of my expanded understanding of the brain and how to apply that understanding to individualized services to meet the needs of clients. I provide clients with science-backed interventions that can be used in everyday life situations. The strategies that I use are designed to prevent anxiety from reaching a panic state and to prevent depressive episodes from landing a person in bed for days at a time. I offer what I call stepping stones that assist clients in feeling better. Each seemingly minor strategy offers clients the opportunity to create the energetic space for them to breathe, to think more clearly, and ultimately increase distress tolerance.

Part of the stress response is that the sympathetic nervous system signals the adrenal glands to release adrenalin and cortisol. My approach to this involves strategies that prompt the parasympathetic nervous system to signal the release of endorphins.

I do provide telehealth services, however I can only offer services to clients who reside in Virginia.
