Q&As

I am always struck by the power of expression and connection when working with clients. I feel it is a great privilege to share in someone’s story and to hold space for that person in their vulnerability. I value the human to human relationship that is established, felt, and held in the therapy space, and I feel honored when asked to join in someone's healing and growth.

I opened my private practice in 2014 in an effort to expand my client reach and serve more individuals in the community. In 2019 I knew I could create more opportunities for healing and growth by building a team of therapists that worked in collaboration to support the whole self. This is when Renew was born.

We are a team of dedicated and compassionate therapists that believe in a holistic, collaborative, and integrative approach to therapy. We care deeply about the experiences of each individual person we work with. We therefore strive to provide a safe, warm, and supportive environment that helps you build on your existing resources and inner strengths. Each therapist at Renew brings their own training, expertise, and personal experience, allowing us to pair you with the team member whose experience and approach will serve you best.

Services

Art therapy is an expressive modality that is used to help individuals move through life challenges and work towards self-acceptance and growth. Art therapy relies more on imagery and symbols than just the spoken word. This focus helps to bypass verbal boundaries and create a safe, external space within which we can reflect and make meaning. It is a modality that focuses on process over product. You therefore do not have to be a skilled artist to work with an art therapist. Instead, you just need a desire to understand yourself on a deeper level, and a willingness to explore and express creatively.

Family therapy addresses issues that impact the well-being of the whole family unit. Family therapy can involve members of the nuclear family and/or extended family. It focuses on the family’s ability to solve problems and collaborate, rather than one individual. Families can benefit from family therapy when struggling with major life transitions, divorce, co-parenting, grief and loss, and mental illness.

Couples counseling can be beneficial for couples seeking to improve their relationship and gain insight into the dynamics of the relationship. The therapist will work collaboratively with the couple to determine therapeutic goals and develop a plan for therapy. Often the therapist will work with the couple to develop healthy communication and problem solving skills. The couple will learn to better understand one another and be a support for each other. There are many reasons why couples choose to seek counseling. Some of the reasons are infidelity, communication issues, life adjustments, sexual dissatisfaction, parenting, separation/divorce, and premarital counseling.

Sand Tray Therapy is a therapeutic intervention that uses sand, water, and miniatures to help an individual connect with their inner, symbolic world. The sand tray process is a hands-on experience where individuals may be asked to create a world or a scene using figurines within a container of sand. Thereafter, the individual will work with the therapist to unpack the content in their tray and make connections between the world they created in the sand and their inner world. This experience helps contain one’s inner, symbolic world, and deliver a sense of balance and wholeness.

Individual therapy is a collaborative healing process with you and the therapist. In this one-on-one setting you and the therapist will endeavor to enhance your life and enable you to thrive amidst challenge. The therapist will join you and help uncover the obstacles that lie between your present state and a feeling of well-being. In therapy you will nurture self-awareness and self-compassion. Common reasons people seek individual therapy include depression, anxiety, stress, abuse, grief, life transitions, and relationship challenges.

EMDR is a way of connecting the body and mind, and helping your brain unlock memories that were stored incorrectly. When we go through various traumatic events, our brain can get backed up like a computer. Just like a computer, it needs something to go in a help clear it out. EMDR is an effective way of “clearing out” those backed-up negative memories.

Using something called bi-lateral stimulation, (tapping, holding buzzers or following the therapists moving fingers with your eyes) you are able to help unlock these memories and bring them to the “surface” where your brain can better understand and process them. The therapist and client work together to move through the 8 phases (at the client’s pace) to assess any negative self-beliefs associated with the traumatic memory and instead replace it with a healthier, positive belief. An example of a negative belief associated with trauma could be “I am unworthy of love”, and we would want to replace that with, “I am worthy and deserving of love.” Through the 8 phases, we work to help the client believe the positive belief instead, while processing any traumatic memories that have yet to be processed. The 8 phases have no specific timeframe and can be moved along at a speed the client is most comfortable with. Before beginning processing, the therapist makes it a point to develop “resources” that the client can use if the trauma ever feels too strong. A few examples of these resources are either imagining a “safe space”, “container”, or practicing deep breathing exercises.

Play is an essential part of human growth. Through play we learn, experiment, resolve inner conflicts, and cultivate relationships. Child-centered play therapy is a non-directive form of treatment that helps children better process their experiences and develop more effective strategies for managing their world. Just as adults use language, children use play to express their thoughts and feelings. Play therapy is suitable for children between the ages of 3 and 12 years old.

The play process can help children build trust, increase self-esteem, reduce anxiety, develop communication and problem-solving skills, reconcile emotional conflicts, manage behavior, foster self-awareness and growth, and discover laughter and joy.
