I've been working with Jamil for a bit over 6 months and have been very happy with the results. I have some chronic medical issues that complicate exercise. Jamil works around them to ensure that I'm able to make continuous, meaningful progress. Throughout us working together, he has always been responsive to feedback, ensuring that our work is moving me closer to my goals. Regardless of what your objectives are, I'm confident that Jamil will have the knowledge and attitude to best help you achieve them. More...

I started working with Jamil after a very long period of close to no physical activity (several years). My work involved sitting at a desk for prolonged periods of time and my diet consisted of basically coffee + pastries.
At the beginning of working with him I could barely do a push-up, a lunge, or a sit-up.

I am very careful with who I chose to work with, and Jamil was amazing at creating a safe, non-judgmental space in which I could basically start working on my fitness from zero. He put together a personalized plan for me that accounted for my fitness level (or lack thereof), health limitations (lower back pain) and goals - and kept reviewing it weekly as my fitness level improved. Jamil provided guidance on nutrition, focusing on whole, non-processed foods as well as other lifestyle factors to improve my overall health and wellbeing. I noticed my body get stronger week by week as I was able to lift heavier weights, and build more endurance - all as a result of Jamil constantly pushing my limits safely and effectively and providing encouragement and support when needed. Also, my back pain subsided - largely as a result of working with Jamil (after seeing several fancy rheumatologists for years to no avail).

Later, I felt strong enough to take on Brazilian jiu-jitsu and he worked with me to accommodate our fitness plan around my new martial arts schedule.

Jamil is one of the most fun people to work with that I have ever met. He is an effective communicator, professional, uplifting, caring, reliable and provides the highest level of quality possible.

Even though I put in the work I needed to do to reach my goal, Jamil was a huge help! From the very beginning, he was holistic in the plan set for me which was super important considering I have tried so many things to gain muscle. He knows exactly how to put together a plan that matches my level and that can benefit my health through this process (I basically entered not knowing the gym). We did a lot of team work to discuss what the next steps for me were (e.g., more reps, add weight in, new techniques). He was very understanding of my work schedule, starting point, and was empathetic to my challenges. With the plan that he set and constant communication, I now feel more confident not only in the gym but in the results I gained physically and mentally. Thank you!! More...

Jamil is amazing. Knows my goals and gets me there with different workouts each day that push my limits perfectly. My goal was to be able to run long distances and he got me running 6 miles, my personal best, within 3 weeks. Prior to this 2 miles was difficult for me. I know my goal of a half marathon will come working with Jamil and Project Re-Humanize, I highly recommend him, you will be extremely happy with your results! More...

Jamil is awesome & I can’t recommend him enough! He is truly amazing at what he does and has such a great depth of knowledge about fitness and health. I think what sets him apart from other trainers is his holistic approach and genuine care for his clients. Jamil always gives in-depth explanations of how & why to do certain exercises and answers all questions thoroughly. I feel comfortable being honest with him about my goals and struggles because I know he truly cares about my wellbeing & success and will meet me with encouragement & understanding. Jamil helped incorporate a sense of structure, discipline, and positivity into my life at a time when I really needed it. He is the ultimate accountability partner & cheerleader. Prior to working with Jamil, I never looked forward to running or working out. After having worked with him for about 6 months, I can confidently say that I am now someone who looks forward to training and I have goals that I previously never even dared to dream about. I am the fittest I’ve ever been in my life; I feel amazing & have gotten tons of compliments from people who have seen my progress. If you’re looking to make a positive and lasting change in your life, Jamil is your guy! More...

I came to Jamil with an injury and on very short notice, and he was still able to help me succeed. I had 10 days to pass a military fitness test but he was willing to help me despite the tight timeline. Jamil was very hands-on, attentive to my injury, and not only physically prepared me but gave me strategies to pace myself better and ultimately pass the test with time to spare. Would definitely recommend him and work with him again in the future. More...

Jamil is an excellent coach. I reached out to him because I needed to run a mile and a half in a certain amount of time for a test. Jamil was able to pinpoint what I needed to work on. I was able to improve my form and stamina for my run with his help. I saw results within two weeks. Jamil was also able to help me mentally and nutritionally reach my running goal. I passed the test with some time to spare. I would recommend him to anyone. More...

Project ReHumanize

These days I find myself experiencing tiny jolts of euphoria where for a split second it dawns on me that I’m a fitter, thinner, more confident, more hopeful and overall happier person than I was less than a year ago. For that, in large part I have Project Re-Humanize to thank.

I have been undergoing my “Re-Humanization” process under the guidance of Jamil for the last eleven months. During that period of time I have shed approximately 30 pounds. I gained muscle and built up a level of endurance which has allowed me, for the first time in my life at the age of 45, to run a 10 mile race, hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, and generally transform myself into a healthy and active person.

Project Re-Humanize came into my life at a point when I seemingly hit rock bottom. I was overweight, depressed, hopeless, and substituted food and alcohol for any meaningful activity in life. As a recent widower and a single father to two boys, one of which has special needs, I did not think that it would be possible to make any changes in the downward spiral of a lifestyle I’ve created.

Once I started working with Project ReHumanize, it became apparent that with the right guidance I could make the much needed change. While there are infinite number of trainers out there, it was obvious from the very beginning that Jamil stood apart from large majority of your stereotypical trainers. His approach integrates every aspect of the human experience. He pays attention to the whole person and targets not only fitness and nutrition but provides support on every level in order to ensure that the client is on the path to success. His process is well thought out and is continuously custom tailored to the person he’s working with. He knows how to encourage and push his clients, but more importantly he’s also aware that sometimes he needs to step back and just support the person in order to then pick up and move them forward.

As people, we are all vulnerable and susceptible to our own insecurities. I know first hand that my path to a healthy lifestyle was greatly impeded by a variety of such issues. In working with Jamil, we were able to identify these vulnerabilities and use them to create momentum that actually propelled my progress to a whole new level.

I truly feel that Project Re-Humanize has done exactly what it’s name purports to do. It has guided me on the path to my own Re-Humanization. I am forever grateful for that, as I know this has been a life-saving experience for me.

The training has made a huge impact on me. I went from recovery and being scared of another injury to running four to five days a week. I have been using the weekends to go on 10+ mile runs and I've been doing great.

Training with Jamil is not just "building muscle," but becoming fit physically and mentally. The whole person is taken into consideration.

UPDATE: I reconnected with Jamil with the goal of training for my first marathon. My priorities were finishing the race and continuing injury free. I was able to achieve both.

Jamil developed a plan for me and we worked together remotely for several months. We had plenty of check-ins and I had the opportunity to ask him a million questions from hydration solutions and refueling to correct form for PRI exercises and developing a healthy headspace around burnout.

Jamil has a great attitude. He is grounded and very realistic about the training. He welcomes open communication about the training and is able to adjust it to nip any potential issues in the bud. I highly recommend working with Jamil if you are ready to get to work and reach goals.

I will 100% work with him again.

Where do I even begin?! There is so many wonderful things to say about my experience training with Project Re-Humanize (Jamil). First, he took his time to get to know me , my background with exercise, my strengths and areas where I need to work at . He took my fitness level into account and based on that created a program that was right for me. Then, his encouragement, accountability, and dedication to see me through my goals held me steady. Project Re-humanize helped me gain confidence to reach fitness goals. I was challenged but I was also understood. I felt accomplished at the end of every workout. Jamil is an incredible coach who leads by example . I have never ever met someone so passionate and dedicated to his goals. Just a few minutes talking with him is enough to feel inspired! Working with him can change your perspective into healthy living. He helped me realize that what seems impossible is actually possible, fun, reachable! I am able to go to the gym with confidence now, but even more I now know the simple things I can do outdoors that make a great workout. I lost 9 pounds in 1 month of working with Jamil, @project-rehuminize . My journey just started but the tools Jamil has given me will remain a lifetime. He taught me that wellness is not a sprint is a marathon. Fitness and wellness is a lifestyle. Thank you for everything and I can’t wait for what is next! Surely I know that I can always count on you, Jamil. As he would say “let’s kick ass!”…Thanks for helping me see that truly there is no mountain high enough , there’s no valley low enough 🙌 . At the start of 2021, I had decided that my word of the year would be "fitness," but I found myself without clear direction and consistency in pursuit of a goal. Three months into the year, I saw a flyer for Project Re-Humanize in a coffee shop window, with appealing wilderness imagery a focus on "human fitness and development." I was also interested in the "1 on 1 and couples training services," since my wife and I often discuss a desire to make health improvements, which can be challenging with our busy lifestyle. Upon reaching out and speaking with Jamil, I was impressed with his knowledge, attentiveness, and curiosity in getting to know our background and aspirations. Since we started working with him, Jamil has shown an investment every step of the way, sending us specific weekly exercise plans and nutrition guidelines, explaining new material, sending us book and video recommendations to support our learning, and holding us accountable in the process. He is accessible, communicative, and generous with his time and energy. Jamil considers the whole person when working with us, even coaching us in how we can improve our home environment as it can serve our wellbeing. Over the past four months, I have become stronger, more endured, more confident, and proud of the progress I see when I look in the mirror. My wife has also benefited greatly from the process, and he has customized his approach to meet our individual needs. I am especially excited because I know this is just the beginning, if I maintain the level of consistency and continual improvement that I have been able to keep over the past few months, thanks to Jamil's coaching. If you are anything like me and spend time going back and forth about decisions before taking a step, rest assured that working with Jamil is a great leap forward in one's self-actualization process. Highly recommend! More...

I initially approached Jamil with the intention of running an ultra marathon.

The day of the race I was confident I would complete it (barring injury), as we put in the work physically and mentally.

Jamil’s coaching kept me injury free, and increased my strength and endurance. My ability to recover is better than ever and my confidence has hit a new level as I have never run so far in my life!

I am looking forward to my next challenge which I now know is not so much about the accomplishment but about the lifestyle and the process.

On 1/29/21, I was notified I had to run 1.5 miles, do pushups and situps according to Cooper standards on 2/26/21 for my Canine (K9) Agility for NYC DOC. I immediately thought I could do the pushups, and the sit-ups running is not my favorite thing to do. I get up the next day and start to run outside. I couldn’t make it to the end of my street without feeling like I was going to pass out. I tried doing suicides in the gym along with laps trying to save myself from the cold weather. I took it outside again. My lungs were burning. I was Out of breath, Couldn’t breathe, Or do Anything close to A mile Without walking Half of the time.

I knew then I needed help. It's now February 4th agility is the 26th. Oh my, what am I going to do? I watched youtube for pointers still wasn't enough to be confident that I will pass the test. I went to the Internet for a trainer. I found Jamil on Lessons.com; he responded promptly we connected, I explained to him what I had to do in such a short time I explained to him how I felt while running, he gave me pointers explained to me how he works and what I can expect from him also what's expected of me for me to pass In such a short time of training and my lack Of experience running.

He introduced Me to the Strava app, which is what I used to track my training sessions while I was running. I was given assignments daily except my rest days until I told him I had a Peleton (why lol). He then added the bike To my training. I never felt better on my bike after running Outside. Jamil is fantastic. He made Me like running.

Fast forward to the 26; I came in first place in my agility because of Jamil. I'm no marathon runner, but I can now run 1.5 miles in under 15 minutes thanks to him, his training, his mentoring, he was my accountability partner, and we've never met except face time. If you want to get yourself prepared or just in shape, Jamil is very knowledgeable and experienced. I'm proof!

His price is very reasonable. He didn't try to kill me, especially with what I was asking in such a short time.

I have never felt more energetic, strong and confident. Through Jamil’s comprehensive knowledge of biomechanics, our workouts vary wildly: sometimes I’m carrying a weight up and down a hill in the park, other times I am using weights to develop my strength in the privacy of my garden. In one of my recent sessions with Jamil, he told me that we were going to be doing a "grinder session". Upon inquiring as to what exactly that was, he told me to drop down and do 200 straight burpees, with 15lb strapped to my chest.

As a relatively skinny 17-year-old, I didn't think I would make it past 40 without collapsing. I've only been training with Jamil for under 2 months, once a week, but I've already noticed significant development in many aspects of my life, some of them seemingly unrelated to health and fitness. First of all, I've achieved unprecedented muscular growth, and have vastly improved my running endurance and speed, something I've always been bad at. I've also noticed that my general mood and attitude have improved, and I often find myself wanting to do difficult tasks and try new things. Training with Jamil has given me a sense of purpose and drive that's definitely been lacking during these times for me. The sessions are grueling and push me to a level of discomfort I've never reached before (I play club soccer and am a black belt in Tae Kwon Do; this is a different animal), but I always leave feeling reinvigorated, triumphant, and craving more. I also have issues with my posture and joint mobility, and Jamil has helped me in correcting that and making sure to orient training in consideration of my mechanical limitations, while still pushing me way out of my comfort zone. At the end of the session Jamil discusses my performance and my "homework" plan with me, but he also talks to me about other aspects of my life, like school, college applications, and personal relationships, and I've gained a lot of perspective from this.

There is no doubt in my mind that each and every person can transform their life in many different ways by training with Jamil. And in the end I did do those 200 burpees.

Personal Trainers

Short story: considering a personal trainer? Consider Jamil Shakoor of Project Re-Humanize, you won’t find better.
Back story: I’m a 63-year-old guy with no background whatsoever in training, working out, gyms, any of that stuff. I joined a health club once decades ago, was given a tour of the machines and how to run them, and then was left to my own devices – so after two visits I was done and haven’t been back since. These days I’m reasonably active (golf a couple times a week, paddling on the weekends, Nordic skiing in the winter), in okay health for a guy my age but I am also 15 pounds overweight with osteoarthritis starting in my hips. I went online looking for a personal trainer basically so I could hit the golf ball further (my pals are hitting it 80 yards past me now), keep up with the grandkids, and forestall old age as long as possible; I’ve been working with Jamil for about a month now.
But enough about me. Jamil, first of all, is super knowledgeable about body mechanics, so his first (and ongoing) project with me is correcting the problems that six decades of mostly sedentary living has created. Moreover, Jamil is a great teacher – and I say this as one who has spent 40-plus-years as a high school teacher, and currently as department chair. Part of my job is evaluating teachers, and Jamil is the real deal. His “assignments” are challenging but attainable, and they can be done (so far, at least!) in half an hour or less. He gives constant feedback and encouragement, and he knows when to incentivize and when to back off. Bottom line: I wasn’t overwhelmed and discouraged right out of the gate from being pushed to the limit of my endurance. Moreover, after only four sessions I can see myself getting better, moving more easily, losing a couple of pounds and keeping them off. Success breeds success, and Jamil knows how to create success. Believe me, if I can succeed at “training”, anybody can – IF their teacher is Jamil.
Jamil is also considerate of the fact that I’m not 25 anymore. When he asks me to do something that hurts, he modifies it so the benefit is achieved without the pain. The number of repetitions are reasonable and doable; the exercises and postures are varied to keep things interesting; the result is I leave a session feeling like I’ve definitely had a workout and that just maybe I can do this – get in shape -- after all.
On a personal level, Jamil is unfailingly courteous, respectful and caring. He is extremely generous with his time and really considers the whole person. It’s not just about the exercises; he talks nutrition, he talks personal development, he talks about life and relationships and their impact on health. I have come to believe that he cares about me as a person, not just another income stream.
Now, if you are a professional athlete seeking that extra edge that will put you over the top, that’s not me so I can’t comment on that. I have no doubt that Jamil could help you, too, based on what he’s said about body mechanics, exercise and nutrition (the guy’s an anatomy and physiology encyclopedia, and he looks like an Olympic athlete) – but I’m no athlete, professional or otherwise. But if you are an average schmoe like me, wanting some expert help to get yourself moving safely and correctly in a way that you can manage (both physically and time-wise), I can tell you with utmost confidence that you won’t do better than Jamil Shakoor.

He is dedicated to teaching people how to transform their lives and outlook on health. No matter what your fitness goals are, working with Jamil will improve you in some shape or form! 14 September 2020

My name is Jennifer and I would like to share my weight loss success story by working with Project Rehumanize’s virtual coaching service. I have been working with the program for a year now.

I work in clinical research and travel to different medical institutions throughout the US all throughout the year. I work long days, and when I am not sitting in front of my computer in my home office, I am either sitting at an airport or on a plane for a long time. Because of my long workdays and the stress that comes along with constant travel, I developed and continued to perpetuate unhealthy habits for many years.

Whenever I had to travel for company meetings, I would partake in many of the foods and drinks available (including dessert) without ever considering how it affected my weight, and health. These habits contributed to a significant increase in weight, a lack of energy, and inflammation: I am 5’6” and was 204 pounds! I was always tired and did not feel good about myself.

Upon taking on virtual coaching, I was able to identify the areas in my life that needed to change. Jamil taught me the importance of becoming aware of the calories I was taking in, but also emphasized the importance of consuming a variety of nutrient dense foods. He did not prescribe any stringent diet, but instead through a thoughtful, compassionate, and ongoing dialogue, was able to get me to understand the importance of making healthy--and sustainable--choices throughout the day. Afterall, life is all about the choices we make.

Jamil’s extensive experience in fitness, and his ability to connect and understand my struggles related to working out helped me overcome many of the obstacles that were making the idea of becoming fit and restoring my health seem impossible. He did a great job at meeting me where I was and wasn't overly demanding (though he does hold me to the highest standard). The fitness program he developed for me took my demanding schedule into consideration and was incredibly effective!

I lost over 50 pounds and have been able to keep it off! I’ve also got my energy back and can enjoy playing with my grandchild without pain or prematurely fatiguing!

Despite the fact that I live in Texas and the founder lives in NY, he was able to help me make amazing changes in my life. He was in communication with me every day, and when I was struggling, he was always on call. I have made major improvements in my lifestyle, and now encourage my family to do the same.

If you are looking for an effective way to get your health and fitness back, one that will actually work and continue to do so, you should seriously consider taking this service on.

You'll attempt and learn you're capable of things you never would have thought possible before, and that with the right mindset anything is achievable. More...

There's not much I can say that will give you an accurate illustration of what life lessons you'll gain from Jamil's coaching. However, I'll do my best to share my experience with you.

I was never an athlete and at the time running was a sport only fit for one, or so I thought. In fact, running a 5k seemed possible but felt that the amount of training to get there would be insurmountable. It was a goal I had to planned to do later in life. It wasn't until I came across Jamil's coaching to show me otherwise.

After learning about my limitation and my current athletic abilities, he invited me to a 10 mile training session and as crazy as it sounds, I made it! He is a professional in his field. His knowledge in his business is, to say the least, admirable.

Ever since my training sessions with Jamil, I've inspired family and friends to do the same. Today I'm proud to say that I'm an athlete, and there are no obstacles I cant get through.

Thanks Jamil! Project Re-Humanize will forever be a part of me!

6 September 2020

I started working with Jamil during the most difficult time in my life. As I was nearing the completion of my second graduate degree, I found it to be a bittersweet experience: I was finally putting an end to a stressful multiple year endeavor which was a great relief, but because I was nearing the end of my student visa and unable to find a job, I became totally demoralized. I only had 30 days to become employed or else I would have to leave the country (and my dreams and hard work) behind.

I stopped taking care of my body. I wasn’t eating well or sleeping enough. I was mentally and emotionally exhausted.

This is where Jamil’s coaching became indispensable to to me. I came to him to build muscle and blow off steam, but his training offered so much more than I had expected.

He taught me the fundamentals of muscle development and we employed the techniques together in the gym. The results are undeniable. However, his emphasis on training emotional and mental resilience during these muscle building sessions was a truly unique experience. He helped me develop a healthy and resilient mindset which significantly decreased the amount of stress and anxiety I was experiencing due to the difficulties I mentioned above.

It’s because of Jamil’s coaching that I am now well equipped to make healthy choices throughout my day, and have an appreciation for my health, fitness, and overall wellbeing. I now understand—and accept—in order to live a long and healthy life, I need to dedicate the time to care for myself, regardless of the stressors I experience.

Thankfully I landed a new job with one day left to spare before needing to return to my home in Azerbaijan. I work in finance and with a demanding team. Even today I use the techniques I’ve learned with Jamil in my workplace; especially when facing new obstacles.

It’s amazing what you can learn with a coach like Jamil, but not come across while earning two graduate level Ivy League degrees...

I am proud to be a part of Project Re-humanize!

Thanks Jamil!

I have an athletic background (lacross and vollyeball player).

I initially took on Jamil’s coaching in an effort to gain more muscle and become more endured, but I soon learned he had way more to offer than simple performance development.

His wholistic approach to fitness, health and nurturing a growth oriented mindset offered me more than mere performance gains: he transformed how I viewed health and fitness as he guided my nutrition and training plan, and helped me adopt healthy lifestyle changes.

Not only did I run my first race of 33 miles within a year of training with Jamil (a distance I never imagined I could do), but my brain fog and anemia vanished, (something I suffered with for over 10 years)! I also have a ton of energy throughout my day (no need for caffeine), and I am more productive during work and motivated to stay fit!

If you are looking for someone to get you fit and healthy, and teach you lifestyle habits that will prevent you from regressing, this is your guy!

His down to earth attitude and energy made my efforts at achieving greater levels of fitness (and health) fun and relatively easy.

Strongly recommend.

Q&As

My approach to helping clients meet their goals is varied and depends on the individual's level of experience in relation to their goal, and the goal itself. If, for example, you want to lose wight but know nothing about the fundamentals of nutrition and a healthy mindset, I would make education a priority by prescribing relevant reading and other educational materials, while simultaneously providing an effective weight loss plan. On the other hand, if you are used to running half marathons, have your nutrition dialed in, and want to train for a longer or tougher race, I would incorporate mental toughness training as well as a quality running program.

I do not take a cookie cutter approach with my clients. I recognize and appreciate the fact that everyone is truly unique and nuanced. This individuality and the need to adapt to it is what makes my craft interesting and provides a healthy challenge. :)

The most important thing is to ensure you have healthy expectations of yourself. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be a body builder/power lifter, or endurance athlete, but there are common negative consequences associated with attempting to--and achieving--very high levels of fitness.

Once you are convinced you are guided by healthy expectations, the next step is to educate yourself as much as possible about what it is you're after. This can be in the way of self-educating, hiring a professional, or both.

Finally, it is important to exercise patience and consistency. Transformations take a while to occur, but it is the journey you need to learn to appreciate. Never underestimate the power of consistency. Quality efforts--even if they are relatively small--have a profound cumulative effect: you achieve much more in the long haul running two miles a day for a month than one 15 mile push.

Many things!

I enjoy taking on the new challenges different clients bring to me: weight loss, muscle, strength and endurance development, healthy lifestyle adaptations, and chronic pain relief are the most common. Depending on an individual's history with training, level of education, and state of health, meeting the above mentioned fitness/lifestyle/rehabilitation goals can be relatively straightforward or require a fair amount of intervention both physically and educationally.

I have learned a lot about pushing my limits and breaking through what many would consider "impossibilities." It is an honor for me to be able to share what I have learned through hard-earned experience, take part in people's health and fitness journey, and see them grow!

At the end of it all, I truly appreciate knowing I have left a person better than when I first met them. At this point I would have taught them the skills necessary to continue leading a health oriented lifestyle, and instilled a solid sense of confidence.

I want to share the lessons I have learned throughout the years. The transforming of one's mindset, health, and fitness is no easy feat to take on alone. I have gone through the wringer with regard to building my health and fitness, and certainly rehabilitating from injury.

There are many pitfalls and a ton of misinformation out there. I have fallen victim to most of it, and had to relearn what it takes to maintain a healthy mind and body.

I'd like to help prevent people from going down the same path while unnecessarily prolonging the achievement of their goals.

I have a unique blend of of experiences and technical knowledge related to health, fitness, rehabilitation, and what it takes to transition from a traditional lifestyle to one that nurtures growth in areas related to overall wellness.

EXPERIENCE - STRENGTH & MINDSET
I started my fitness journey in college when I decided to pursue a career in the navy as a SEAL. For years I trained extreme muscular endurance, and anaerobic/aerobic capacity. I was the team leader of a group of civilians training up for U.S. Special Operations, Navy SEALs, and other elite programs in the military. Three hours of swimming, followed by ten miles of running, and ending with heavy lifting and/or hundreds of repetitions of calisthenics was commonplace for me. Although I called my military career short after graduating boot camp (I am not a SEAL), I learned much about the mind's ability to push the body to levels it has never experienced (and beyond).

EXPERIENCE - ENDURANCE FOCUSED
After my discharge from the military I decided to keep up the intensity and take on ultra marathoning. The mental resilience and fitness I forged through intensive training in preparing for the military led me to take on a 50 mile marathon prior to ever running a traditionally distanced marathon of 26.2 miles (why not?). After completing my first 50 mile race, I completed another 50 miler before jumping to a 101 mile race. Despite many warnings from the running community and the concern of friends, I took the race on and earned a 3rd place finish in under 24 hours.

EXPERIENCE - REHABILITATION
Prior to entering the military I was dealing with moderate to sometimes severe chronic pain in my knees, lower back, neck, shoulders, and SI joint. I consulted with over seven physical therapists, doctors of physical therapy, MDs, and surgeons at (HSS). Despite literal blood, sweat, tears, (and time/money), and the feeling of hopelessness, I was able to educate myself on mechanics, and with the help of a wonderful team of therapists get my body in order again. I also decided to take on the formal education that separated these physical therapists from the many others that were not able to help me.

I had to unlearn a ton of misinformation regarding mechanics, form, and different styles of training. Eventually I was able to get my body in working order again, and compete for and earn a SEAL contract (about 1,000 awarded once a year throughout the U.S.).

Despite my unique blend of quality hard-earned experience, I realize there is always more to learn, and therefore make an effort to constantly educate myself by attending different courses and taking on a variety of readings.

EXPERIENCE - HEALTH
As a child I was severely asthmatic. There were many times I was hospitalized and required emergency medical attention. When I decided to try out for the military I realized I would not be able to join as an asthmatic. I decided to consult with two pulmonologists and both claimed there was no way for me to not be dependent on my inhaler (that there was no way for me to join the military). Contrary to their advice, I continued to train, but this time without the use of a rescue inhaler. I would experience and run through many asthma attacks before I was finally able to breakthrough. I now run ultra marathons with no issues and haven't used an inhaler in over ten years.

The two pulmonologists I consulted with were experts in lung physiology, but clearly not in human potential.

WHY YOU SHOULD CHOOSE ME
I know what it's like to feel and perform terribly. I know what it's like to feel helpless due to chronic pain and low self-esteem. I also know--through many years of tough training--what it's like to feel confident, perform well, exceed expectations, and feel on top of the world. I do not take a textbook approach to training, I take a wholistic view: what are your likes/dislikes?; what medical conditions do you have?; what beliefs do you have that may be limiting your growth and success?; do you have a support system?

Also, it's important to keep in mind that just because someone is fit--and certified--does not mean they know what they are doing. I am certified through the American Council on Exercise (ACE). It typically takes about 3-6 months to prepare for it. I passed it with a score of 95% with only about three hours of studying. This is because I have spent years training, making mistakes, and correcting them prior to taking the exam. However, I had to unlearn much of it (the text book stuff) and relearn mechanics altogether. I had to reeducate myself after earning the certification because the "best" way to train is always evolving with the advent of new discoveries.

There is a lot that goes into developing a properly and optimally functioning body and mind. I'm happy to start the journey with you.

This is not just a job for me, it's a craft, it's a way of life.

The coaching you’ll experience and the techniques you will learn are based on a decade of experience lifting weights, building muscular endurance, training for intense obstacle course races, military preparation, and running ultra marathons. You will also learn about the mental, emotional, and physical pitfalls that often lead to injury and failure. All of this culminates in a unique, safe, and effective session to help you meet your most audacious goals.

What to Expect
Depending on your goals and level of fitness, sessions can involve about six miles of running, mixed in with hundreds of repetitions of calisthenics and weights, to simply learning the fundamentals of movement and exercise. Sessions are 60 minutes in length. Upon completion of your session your coach will discuss your performance and goals, and answer any questions you may have.

One of the major benefits of virtual training is the freedom it affords you. Take your training and/or rehabilitation sessions anywhere you want. If your desire is to build a significant amount of strength you may be required to take your session to a local gym; for ultra marathon training and OCR/military preparation, taking your session to the park or on a trail may be appropriate. Of course you always have the option of training in the comfort of your home.

What to Expect
Sessions can be held through all major telecommunication applications (Skype, Zoom, Face Time, WhatsApp, and Google Duo). If your sessions are held at home, you can use a laptop or phone. However, if you plan on taking your session to a gym or park, it is important to have a phone with video conferencing capabilities and good reception. For coaching during runs, a basic phone with a headset will be all you need.
