I recently reached out to Dr. Hatcher for Executive Coaching to help me me develop the skills and confidence necessary to be an effective people leader. Throughout my career I have always been responsible for managing systems, however with recent promotion to Sr. VP I am now responsible for the management of systems and people.

As a Coach, Dr. Hatcher helped me become more self-aware. He uncovered insights, strengths and weaknesses that I never new I had. He then used this to support my development as a people leader.

Dr. Hatcher is energetic, knowledgeable, a great motivator, and truly gifted in what he does. Not only am I more confident in my ability to lead others, I’m more confident in my ability to lead myself. What was initially suppose to be a total of 6 sessions as transformed into 1, sometimes 2-3 coaching sessions a week for the last 4 months and I plan on holding on to our sessions for as long as I possibly can as I value the growth I’ve had working with him. To date I have referred Dr. Hatcher to over 9 people and even have him doing some career coaching for my oldest daughter who is preparing to graduate from college.

If you have an opportunity to work with Dr. Hatcher I would strongly encourage you to do so as he will put you on the right track for success.

My organization recently received an investment from a VC firm that gave us the funding necessary to grow our organization’s people count 6 to 42 employees. As an innovator I tend to be clueless when it comes to people development and culture creation, resultantly I found the process of growing our people count as an impossible task.

A member from the VC firm that invested in us referred over Dr. Hatcher from Empathy Factory/P3 Strategy Group to help develop a talent strategy for us. Dr. Hatcher and his team were absolutely amazing and made a tedious and scary task become one of the most valuable professional experiences I’ve ever had. Dr. Hatcher and his team gained a tBorough understanding of our organizational and business goals and developed a people strategy to support our need. They helped with everything from helping us identify a HRIS system, to developing job descriptions, development, recruitment, and onboarding. Most importantly they helped to create a roadmap for success by partnering/coaching myself and rest of Leadership team to ensure that we had the right skills to motivate, develop, and lead our new employee group.

We were so pleased with the work that they created that we decided to keep the firm on retainer in order to help with other HR needs. After 11 months of partnership with Dr. Hatcher and his team I can easily say that they were probably one of the best investments I’ve made to date. I am more confident, we have a great workforce, and organizational culture. While we are still growing I am very thankful to have Empathy Factory and P3 Strategy Group with us to make it the people side of business relatively easy.

Q&As

As an Industrial and organizational (I/O) psychologists my focus is on the behavior of employees in the workplace. I apply psychological principles and research methods to improve the overall work environment, including performance, communication, professional satisfaction and hiring. With that being said I get to collaborate with some pretty amazing organizations in helping them develop cultures that put people first. What I love most about my job is being able to witness the impact these strategies have on organizations and more importantly on the people within. Seeing a struggling leader gain the confidence to lead, an underperforming team increase their productivity, or a failing business become profitable is truly amazing.

‘The idea for Empathy Factory stemmed from a seemingly ordinary moment with Johnathan's (our Chief Empathy Officer) mother and her two year old dachshund, which carried profound implications.

His mother is legally deaf, able to hear only with the aid of an implant which enables limited hearing as sound vibrations pass through her skull. Her 2 year old dachshund, Mandy, like many dogs loves to bark and chase the neighbor dogs up and down the length of the fence to the exasperation of their owners. Because of her disability, his mother does not always hear when this happens.

On such an occasion, Mandy’s barking went on longer than the neighbor could tolerate, and they came over to confront his mother. In their frustration and anger, they were unable to listen to her apologies or attempts to explain her limitations. The exchange left his mom so anxious, that she stayed up until 2am cleaning the house in an attempt to burn off the resulting negative energy.

Upon hearing this story, what struck Johnathon was the lack of empathy, which prevented solutions from being identified and left both parties upset. If the neighbor had empathy for his mother’s disability, certainly the exchange could have resulted in a simple solution that brought peace to all involved (like texting his mom when Mandy takes to barking, so she is visually notified and can intervene).

This got him thinking… Empathy is the skill I use in business to understand and bridge gaps between differing perspectives to enable solutions between consumers, brands, internal teams, etc. But why don’t more people readily deploy empathy when confronted with differences? Further, can empathy be taught? And how do you go about teaching it?

The next call he made was to Dr. Neiman Hatcher (our Managing Partner and Chief People Officer), and Empathy Factory resulted from the conversation.’
