I am quite pleasantly surprised at how nice the facilities are, how friendly the staff, and how nice and varied the equipment is. My kids love the youth center area and sports programs. This is an excellent facility and organization. The gym itself is well equipped and offers child watch. The number of exercise classes they offer are immense. Both the indoor and outdoor pools are awesome. We have utilized their private swim lessons and kindercise classes and was highly impressed with the staff. I like this gym. Lots of amenities and things to do. Even a daycare. $45/mo can be steep for some but there isn't another gym in the city that has better facilities. There are no moaning and screaming body builders thank God. They're so annoying. The staff is good! I've seen people come in and treat the front desk people like total crap at 7:15am because they had to wait a total of five seconds to scan in because they were busy helping another customer. And then they wonder why the front desk people are not always beaming with smiles and rainbows and then complain some more that they weren't treated nicely! Sorry but $45/mo does not grant you the red carpet treatment at the Y. You just get to go there. Typical entitled Americans.Recommendation to the Y: To avoid getting your heads bit off over nothing by moody Iowans, have a fixed red light gun mounted on the counter so people can scan themselves in. I love the Norm Waitt YMCA. I've been a member for several years even through the year during the flood. My only complaint is Sunday afternoons are near impossible to get a rhythm going on any kind of workout. People are either sitting on equipment chatting with friends or on their phones. Today I got frustrated so I decided to give up on my workout and decided to go work up a sweat in the steam room. There were at least 12 people already in there which is fine but it was a revolving door not allowing the steam to build up. I don't know if they are having some sort of promotion or what but it's way too busy for me. More...
