Q&As

We are using a technology to record interviews remotely, eliminating the need for in-person contact during the pandemic.

The software, called OpenReel, allows us to remotely monitor and conduct an interview using a person’s smartphone. It provides a much better image quality than recording via Skype, Zoom, or WebEx, which are limited by one’s Internet connection and often look grainy, pixelated, or skip frames.

This is an excerpt of a production we just completed for the Boston Foundation. It’s a tribute video to their CEO, who is retiring after 20 years. We interviewed six people from their homes, including former MA Governor Deval Patrick:

With OpenReel, a smartphone captures the recording, and the interview is conducted and monitored live through the software. First, we guide the subject to pick and set up the best background, camera angle and lighting. Second, we direct the interview. Third, we upload the segment to the cloud, where it is viewable by the client and downloaded for editing.

OpenReel allows a client to sit in on the recording along with the director and producer. It also allows us to remotely set up the focus, exposure, audio levels, and recording mode (resolution and frames per second).
