What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?
I could write a book about the correct technical use of a camera, the study of composition and color theory, of art history, aesthetics, trends, the physical laws of light, etc. The application of all of these can create the foundation and the potential for great photographs. Sometimes, however, it's just about being in a quiet moment, receptive to your surroundings, and allowing that to lead the way.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
Significant life events are often stressful, and most people tend to be a little uneasy around a camera. Spending time with my clients discussing visions and expectations, having a solid plan, and creating a relaxed and trusting familiarity between us (and the camera) diffuses a considerable amount of tension and makes way for great photography. I will ask as many questions as needed to be 100%, but mainly, I will ask to spend some time together chatting and maybe shooting some practice photos, laughing, sharing stories, and inwardly fine-tuning what I will be looking for and exactly how to capture it.
What do you love most about your job?
ohhhh... I have a recent blog post about this if you care for long-winded ramblings. www.mariemillerphotography.com/photographer-reflections
